dusqi
Thats just plain ridiculous. No wonder britain is the way it is... ;) Seriously though. Thats [developmentally delayed]ed. Even more glad I live in America now. Your degrees are 4 years so that's an extra year anyway. British degrees concentrate on depth rather than breadth. The reason for that is that American universities want to make as much tuition money as possible, so the longer they have their students messing around studying Philosophy when they ultimately major in Chemical Engineering, the more money they get. British universities are largely funded by the taxpayer, so the government wants to get students in and out as soon as they can, and there's no time for messing around trying out other things. thestig0
Congrats guys! I've just done my AS levels and got C, C/D, D, which isn't too bad considering I've got a year to bump that up, I'm hoping to do Computer Science (G400) too, apparently it has one of the worst employment rates for gradutes though. :(I'm going to Wolverhampton open day tomorrow, hopefully it's good. My legions of fans:
Socrates
COngrats at OP for not only getting into college, but for deciding (I'm assuming ofc) on a major.FYI, we have to choose a major before we go to university over here in the UK aka we can't go undeclared and in fact if you don't get accepted for your subject then you don't get accepted at all. Whaaaaa I'd hate that. I have a general idea, but I'm going to take some prelimary classes in each study to see which I like best. But you are allowed to change majors... right?Technically, yes, but it's not really the done thing. You more or less just start again unless your degrees are similar.I guess we slowly lead down into courses because we have to pick our 3/4/5 a levels which then tend to lead us into degrees as they are very often needed as prerequisites to courses. Racheya
Yeah it gets narrowed down when you start GCSEs. You usually select which technology, arts, humanities subjects you'll study, eliminating a few. Then you pick 4 AS Levels, which usually drops down to 3 at A2... by this point you generally know which one in specific you want to continue to degree. I edit for the [Tip.It Times]. Only a small fraction of American universities are funded in large part through tuition. Most large state schools gain most of their money through state government appropriations, and all of the famous schools (Harvard, Yale, MIT etc) have endowments reaching the tens of billions of dollars which they use to provide for their students. I know Harvard paid out more then 300 million dollars last year in scholarships, such that they don't make much money from students staying longer - plus, nearly all universities in the US are non profits, so they really don't care about how much they pull in (per student). Satenza
Good work to everyone getting results, uni is a blast, you'll love it. Was a nice change not having the results day stress this year though! You can say that again. Even though I graduated this year I still feel nervous when it comes around to this day. Well done to everybody, but especially well done to the guy who is going to Manchester for PPE, you'll have lots of fun! With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

Will H
Ah, the English system really know how to mess with you. I applied for Chemical Engineering course, and needed an ABB to go to Sheffield, or BBB to go to Aston Uni in Birmingham. Then I screwed up, and got a phone call telling me I got a BBC, dropping a maths grade. At this point I'm panicking, my UCAS form isn't doing anything and I'm just waiting for it to go to 'rejected'. At the same time I'm hearing on the news about how clearing is tougher than it's ever been and that I'm stupid because I'm 18 and can't get a job or insurance and so on, with the soft cackling laughter of bankers, politicians and oil company bosses in the background of my doomed life. Later in the morning I go to the school to collect my certificates and sit with the row of people who also didn't match their offers. They're all respectable people, just a victim of the times. Then suddenly, out of the blue: 'Your UCAS form has changed. Please log on blah blah blah blah...' I log in, knowing my fate was sealed. 'Aston University, Chemical Engineering MEng: Unconditional Offer Accepted' I nearly died. ~ W ~

xSxqPowerx
British system sounds relatively crazy. When I got into University last year, I got my conditional acceptance offer in January (about as early as they can come). As long as I kept my average above 80% I was in. Easy. Starting 2nd year of mechanical engineering in a few weeks. For those of you who are new to post-secondary education, it is great! Definitely requires a lot of work, but the freedom is great. So is only taking courses that actually apply to what you want to do. I was sick of highschool english classes - always ended up being my worst mark even though I was more literate than pretty much anyone in my grade. I'm not sure what to tell you, there are lots of great places in Manchester off the student track to go visit. Remember to look around the Northern Quarter, it may be slightly more expensive to drink in, but the beer and surroundings are so much better. Sevestia
I've heard Manchester is an amazing uni. Didn't apply, but I've heard the nightlife etc is great and generally when people talk about it, they say "You'll love it there." Makes me wish I had applied. :P Also, I got into the university I wanted, too. I didn't get the right grades, but surprisingly I still got in. I've been panicking and losing sleep over it since I finished college; totally convinced myself bio had let me down (which it did) and that I'd never get in. Glad I was wrong. assassin_696
Well done James, congratulations! Isn't Cambridge good for Physics? :) It is, but it's also bloody tough here  Cambridge doesn't offer any straight science courses, instead you apply for Natural Sciences which forces you to take four options in the first year to keep breadth (I took physics, maths, geology and evolution & behaviour) then specialise in later years, so this year I'm just doing physics and maths. It's a fantastic system because it means you can study four sciences in your first year at degree level, but that makes it pretty tough, very competitive and so if you just want physics there might be better unis. Imperial College, Durham and a few others are all pretty solid for physics. I think Leeds has a nice astrophysics course but I didn't apply there.
