Red_Tanya
From the pages of Jagex:RSOF Quick find code: 239-240-793-61679001 The following worlds will be upgraded this afternoon: 83,84,123,137 @ 4.15pm (currently 4pm as of editing this) The upgrade will migrate them from a 32 bit operating system to 64 bit which will allow us to address more memory in the future. I believe 2GB is the current limit that a 32bit OS can handle easily. Don't panic if you see the system update timer this is just to shut them down safely. Looking forward we will be rolling these upgrades out to all game worlds in the next few weeks or so and I'll put up more information about it as and when they happen in the recent updates forums. Thanks, Mod Nexus. Worlds done: 69,81,82,119 I'm dumbfounded that they were only running 32bit myself.... "America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our people."-George W. Will H
The fact that they manage to run the whole game on a 32 bit OS is incredible. The memory limit's actually closer to 3.5GB, but that's still a really tight limit on a server that's running an entire MMO. ~ W ~
stonewall337
Which is why, even with 4 GB of ram and a duel core, you are really only getting around ~3.5'ish GB of ram. Sy_Accursed
Why are people so astounded at 32 bit? Before windows 7 and the latest mac os 64 bit was kinda the rare one that not many used; and even now half the programmes out there dont have 64 bit versions. It's only v recently that java has got a stable 64 bit version out, thats been 32 bit for ages still. Game worlds are run in Java, having a 64 bit version to get the most of the OS is probably a reason they are making the move. I guess with the extra memory they can cram more than 4 game worlds on each server. Thanks Gradeskip93 for my awesome sig!
xxshady
We already know Jagex's server infrastructure is extremely efficient. They were running the forums on a Celeron with 1 GB of RAM... Dont treat server specs the same as desktop specs. This means almost nothing except for enabling future engine / service upgrades. -------------------------------------------------------------------
Dexek
Tanya, are you allowed to post outside the Runescape News forum? ;) So I suppose we won't see any real differences from this change? I guess it's nice to see that they're upgrading. jsboutin2
I don't understand computers that much, but would this mean that numbers(2.17b) would go the long computer format? My question exactly. technically, they'd be free to do so if they implement it on every world. (Raising skill caps from 200M to 1b+, perhaps? Because they'd have to set one...Or maybe not.) stonewall337
No this has nothing to do with the current number cap, that is tied in with Java, not with the OS on the server. Basically, it means the servers should be easier to upgrade on their end, but nothing really game wise on our end. MerchantInTheDark
I believe 2GB is the current limit that a 32bit OS can handle easily. A 32-bit OS can handle up to 4GB. I'm surprised a Jagex mod doesn't know that! I've always wondered what servers they ran on. It's hard to believe a whole HD world with 1k+ players on at once ran on only 4gb of memory. Basically, it means the servers should be easier to upgrade on their end, but nothing really game wise on our end. Its not really because of a limitation of Java, its because of 32bit Integers. If they really wanted to up it, it would be possible using another method. They just decided it was not worth the hassle in the end. @MerchantInTheDark,they run 4 game worlds on the newer servers so thats 8k players (hence why when a server crashes, or goes down for repair it tends to take out 4 worlds). A 32-bit OS can actually handle about 3.5GB of memory. As to your comment about the "HD world", graphics are a client-side issue. The server handles the game logic, chat, quests ,etc. That is why they could turn bounty hunter off when they did without a server reboot. The client (you) sends a packet of data indicating your future moves and actions and the server (Jagex) checks to see if it is possible and if you have all of the requirements to perform an action. The server then sends a packet confirming your actions and tells your client to proceed. This all happens in a 900ms tick I think. 65,280 to 99 fletching on 3-14-0940,405 to 99 woodcutting on 10-17-2009

GottaGetDownOnfriday
Does this mean you can stack more than 2147M items in one pile now? No. they would have to change the variable type used to indicate the max amount of a stack to a long type. All this means is they can run more worlds per server and utilize more memory. 65,280 to 99 fletching on 3-14-0940,405 to 99 woodcutting on 10-17-2009
Aidos Drakon
This all happens in a 900ms tick I think. Did they change it?
