lordkafei
Isn't this old news? I remember reading about Gilese 581 somewhere...:| It's famous in ufology circles. But it's 20 ly away... if we sent a signal out there today, we'd be 40 years waiting for an answer. We will have found swimming things under the ice of Europa by then. :shades: PvP is not for meIn the 3rd Year of the BoycottReal-world money saved since FT/W: Hundreds of DollarsReal-world time saved since FT/W: Thousands of Hours
decebal
I agree, old news, I remember reading about it in National Geographic a while ago... Aren't there organisms that can live off methane?
Dizzle229
Oh, science. Why do you have to taunt us with things that are awesome but won't do anything in our lifetimes? Get back here so I can rub your butt.
Bier
I agree, old news, I remember reading about it in National Geographic a while ago... Aren't there organisms that can live off methane? It isn't old new, what you read about was probably Gliese 581 c, this is Gliese 581 g, the similar names is because they are in the same planetary system. No known life can live without water, there might be some theories of life living off methane that I don't know of.

DUELMASTER30
They've been predicting this kind of thing for a while, but there are several problems that come up right away - such as gravity and extreme temperature. I'll be more exciting once they find something we could practically live on. Not to mention the 87000 year journey there. No, they're excited about this planet because it solves the two problems you just stated. Gravity - Humans can live reasonably in a 3g environment; our bodies can take it. The temperatures also aren't extreme, because it's in the so called "Goldilocks Zone" where temperatures are just right so water doesn't freeze on the planet's surface, and where it doesn't evaporate off of the surface right away. If this planet was in our solar system instead of Mars we sure as hell could live there almost right away, just when we got the funds up and transportation down. It's also not about the fact that we could live there, it's about the possibilities and most likely inevitability that life exists elsewhere. Also to the title, it's 3x the size of Earth, just the conditions are very similar. Zilla
An interesting fact about the planet: It orbit's Gliese 581 in 37 days. Seems short but remember the star is a Red Dwarf. Amazing that scientist can find the habitable zone. Hopefully they are right with their measurements. Confused why the other planet discovered (Gliese 581f) didn't get any attention at all, almost no sources even mention that planet.
