Homelessness

A friend of mine was on the brink of being homeless a month ago, and he linked me to this website which is pretty much a homeless survival guide. It's changed my opinions on homeless people... The whole site is a very interesting read...

What do you think about homeless people?

In some cases I feel sorry for them, the ex soldiers who have come back from combat gone off the rails and lost their homes, families and jobs. However the ones who pretend to be homeless just to get extra money piss me off more than benefit thieves

There's a group of bums near the exit of a popular highway. I've had neighbors offer them jobs instead of spare change, but they've always declined. As it turns out, they were making about $80k a year from the change they begged for (local news organization broke the story a while back).

$80k / year from begging for change? Sounds like a pretty sweet gig.

Not to judge all homeless people, but I have very little respect for people who aren't actively seeking to improve their lives through productive means.

Was visiting San Fransisco a few years ago. I watched someone with a fresh cast and crutches set up to beg for change next to another homeless person. I mean, really?

I've got a couple $15 subway gift cards in my wallet. Figure next time I'm asked for change I'll give them one of those instead. No, I won't finance your booze addiction, but I will make sure you're not hungry.

Sounds too good to be true. Not really sure how believable that is...

There are some people that beg/pan handle/are "homeless" as their job. They own a house and car, but they just pretend to be homeless, there's one in our city that does that. Our paper ran a story on him a couple years back. They definitely aren't the majority, but they're out there

I would disagree. Homeless people have made larger contributions to society than most people ever could. For example, Orwell. J.K. Rowling and Poe may have also been homeless, if I recall correctly.

Beggars are annoying though.

For one, JK Rowling wasn't homeless (and Orwell and Poe were questionably homeless). Moreover, their contributions to benefiting society weren't huge-- they came out with interesting literary works, but thats about it.

Well, it's really a matter of opinion how important they were.

For Orwell, the bio I read must have exaggerated it. Here's what Wikipedia said:

Following the precedent of Jack London, whom he admired, he started his exploratory expeditions slumming in the poorer parts of London. On his first outing he set out to Limehouse Causeway spending his first night in a common lodging house, possibly George Levy's 'kip'. For a while he "went native" in his own country, dressing like a tramp and making no concessions to middle class mores and expectations; he recorded his experiences of the low life for later use in "The Spike", his first published essay, and the latter half of his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London (1933).

He fell seriously ill in March 1929 and shortly afterwards had all his money stolen from the lodging house. Whether through necessity or simply to collect material, he undertook menial jobs like dishwashing in a fashionable hotel on the rue de Rivoli providing experiences to be used in Down and Out in Paris and London. In August 1929 he sent a copy of "The Spike" to New Adelphi magazine in London. This was owned by John Middleton Murry who had released editorial control to Max Plowman and Sir Richard Rees. Plowman accepted the work for publication.

We're conditioned to despise homeless people and think ill of them. What we've labelled them as and have made them represent isn't really who homeless people are. Yet, when I think of the homeless, I think of a ravaging, mad man and filthy, disgusting, old lady. I really can't force myself to think of the homeless in any other mentality or to have any other characteristics.

I think there's a difference between those who have the ability & will to not be homeless, yet choose to do so for whatever reasons and those who were put into a homeless situation beyond their control (sickness, addictions). The first group, I can't really think of them as anything, as that is their lifestyle. They've chosen that lifestyle and if they don't want to change, then why not? That lifestyle isn't hurting society as much as other lifestyles do. It's their choice, is it not? If they can survive through whatever methods they go through and they aren't hampering on other people's lives as drastically as other lifestyles, why not? Why is it wrong to centre them out and accuse them of doing a negative lifestyle?

Those who are homeless, but not by their own will, is where those who have a 'typical job', can lend a helping hand or that's where the rest of society should be jumping in. Not trying to fix something that has been labelled as one generic term; "The Homeless Problem".

Just my opinion.

As long as they aren't threatening, or doing anything else stupid, I don't have a problem with them.

No jokes, but Auckland has a hobo that lives under one of the bridges on our motorway, near a train station, that has a laptop...

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

YAY homeless people.

A friend told me about this guy.

Pretty weird.

BLANKET MAN!!

Whenever there is a giant storm in my city I always wonder how the homeless people are coping in the weather. I was thinking about it today and thought of all the places homeless people went when the weather is horrible. I was thinking.. fast food playgrounds (like McDonalds playgrounds)? Maybe?

I always thought it'd be a good idea to sort of wander around public places indoors. I'm sure you wouldn't get kicked out of a church if you were actually sitting down and listening to the preacher, or maybe just sitting in a public library?

Whenever I see a homeless man, i kinda feel bad for him, imagining how he had fallen on hard times. Not very often, i would give him some change. Sure, he might just be a drug/alcohol addict, but some people actually appreciate the however little change you give them.

Especially where I live, it can get to -40 C in the winter, it's tough for some of the homeless.

I've actually been aware of true homelessness for years now; not to shoot down OP but that link is old news.

However, I still can't stand homeless who refuse to better themselves. One dude who sleeps at the corner of our college was offered a job at wendys, 7-11, subway and even golds gym. Turned them all down. He just sits there in the rain. Which is cool, but then begs for change? Go suck a rubber duck. I hope you choke on the squeaker and die.

That's kind of messed up. I mean to be lucky enough for someone to just walk up and offer you a decent job and turn it down...

Some people are just lazy and they know that others will feel sorry about them. It sort of sucks that people like that give a bad name to people who may actually need some help.

Now that I'm a city kid, I've grown to enjoy some of the homeless people. Not a local guy, but I'm a huge fan of The Jacksonville Ninja

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWwzFDLW8TE

Around my parts there's "Linus" the war vet turned "blanket man" and a guy that refered to himself as "The Black Cupid of Safe Sex" who told kids on campus that they are going to get laid that night and told them to use a condom. Great guy to be honest.

But there are some really losery ones that are boring and just stand by train ticket dispensers asking for change >.>

about two years ago, when I had a terrible case of depression (not helped by the stress of year 12), I was upset one night when I was in Sydney doing work for ReachOut!, a non-profit youth group I work with. I went for a walk and noticed this old bloke sitting on a chair outside the hotel. So I sat next to him and next thing you know we were talking. His name was Joel and he used to be a Sniper in the Vietcong War. That day changed me quite a bit and taught me not to be judgemental of people from first glance, along with the hardships of life and to never give up as long as you have just one goal as he said:

"As long as you have at least one goal in your life, no matter how big or small it may be, it's the light in your life to keep on moving foward. Through hardships and pain, the reward of reaching to and beyond your goal is something that can't be explained by words".

I was moved so much by what he told me and his stories, I asked if he was hungry. He said he was a bit hungry but to not worry about him. I also noticed he had a pipe hanging out of his top pocket. So I ran down to a Subway takeaway and got a foot long sub to split between us, and ducked into the tobacco shop and brought a tin of goatweed tobacco and shared with him the food and gave him the tobacco. I must have moved him because I could see so much life return to his face and a crack of a smile on him.

but anyway, tl;dr - There are some good people out there who just saw enough of the world and/or and have given their best effort.

Edit - Yes, these people do exist, but with the continuous growth of the 'fake beggars', it's extremely hard to distinguish between the two. Giving them food is a nice gesture, giving them money is a different story. I wouldn't feed some guy's cocaine addiction through giving them some spare change, especially considering the fact that some of them make $80k+ per year, tax free (albiet illegal)

Homelessness, by definition, isn't that bad. It can just be a normal guy going through financial hardship, struggling to get back on their feet.

It doesn't help that the country is going through terrible conditions, be it UK or America. :|
