Next novel I'm supposed to be reading for school is called The Kite Runner. It's about boys growing up in Afghanistan during the Taliban regime. Sounds interesting actually.

Haven't read it yet but its a book I am looking forward to that comes out next month... It looks like a very promising book. Below is what the back of the book says (I got it off the book's facebook page).

When a man wakes up inside a cage that is being carried through

an underground city, he has no idea where he is or what has

happened to him. As Von, a victim of amnesia, is taken to a jail

cell to await his fate amongst elves, humans, dwarfs, gnomes, and

halflings, he is told he is a member of the Royal Guard of Genisus.

It is not long before he is transported to the palace where he

meets an impatient king who eventually returns him to his jail

cell while deciding his destiny.

As Vons memory slowly returns, he discovers that he is the only

one who can protect Drylora world that abandoned him

from its greatest evil, his own brother. Through his journey to the

truth, Von meets an unlikely group of friends who are willing

to sacrifice everything to help him stop his brother Scarlet

from annihilating the only world they have ever known.

As Vons past becomes clear and reveals his future, he soon

realizes the only way he can end his brothers heartless

massacres is to find him and kill him.

Ahhh, found it :) this thread has been hiding from me. I've been reading philosophy excerpts all semester (100+ pages sometimes) but now I'm back to good ol' books!

Here is my summer reading list:

  • pandoras seed ; spencer wells
  • living with complexity ; donald norman
  • seeing further, the story of science and the royal society ; bill bryson
  • super cooperators ; martin nowak
  • genius ; james glick
  • how the mind works ; steven pinker (may not read)
  • the 1000$ genome ; kevin davies
  • biopunk ; marcus wohlsen

Currently halfway through Pandoras Seed, not bad so far! It's pretty much Guns, Germs & Steel but simpler and much much much shorter.

Reading Freakonomics now. The book is starting to bug me because I disagree with the point its making on abortion and violent crime, but I can't argue back with the author. In his argument he also contradicts what he says in other areas of the book. I'll probably finish it sometime this week, but I feel like I'm wasting time and money.

Currently reading:

Game of Thrones - George R. R. Martin

Prodigal Mage - Karen Mirren

The Lair of Bones - David Farland

I usually pick up one book and finish it quickly but I've been slowly switching between these three for a few weeks now. Need to get back on track.

I got like half way through A Game of Thrones. While it was good, I don't like how it doesn't get the reader invested in characters. Since it deals with so many people at once, I don't feel like there's a character or two that I can really get attached to, and I like having that element in a book.

If you got half way through the first novel, I can understand why you're having a hard time feeling an attachment to any other character. I personally found the groundwork the novel laid out to be engaging enough to get me through the first book and into the second, where things really start to get interesting.

If you can, I'd really suggest you try to finish the first book at least before you write off the written series :P

I'm still sloooooowly working my way through it  Mostly when I have nothing else to do though, like when I'm stuck on a long plane ride :P I'm not motivated enough to read it in my free time D: For a while I was reading it along with the TV show. So I'd read a few chapters and then watch it in the TV show the following week. But I fell a little behind :XD:

The Wheel of Time series. I'm on book ten. I've always been an 'epic fantasy' junkie (LOTR, The Golden Compass, Harry Potter, The Transall Saga), and this is by and far the best series of that genre I've ever read, if not the best book series I've ever read period.

Confederacy of Dunces. Really nice book, the way the characters are introduced. I usually read it with a smile, the big blend of different characters combined with the absurdity of some of the situations, without those situations becoming unrealistic, makes it a real pleasure to read. Next on my to-read list is Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Dracula. Anyone familiar with this?

No. What's that about?

I'm reading I Am Ozzy, Ozzy Osbournes biography which has to be one of the most curse heavy books I've ever read. Good book though.

I think I'm gonna move into China Meiville's Embassytown next.

Reading Van Helsing's dialogue was excruciating.

I am one of the biggest book nerds I know... and I can honestly say that, having nearly finished the novel, I can't recall ever being anything but bored with it.

I liked Van Helsing. Part of the book can be boring, but I find that to be the case with a few older novels that I've had to read this year, like The Curious Case of Dr Jeykell and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein, etc.

I love Bram Stoker's Dracula.

One of my all time favourite novels; I think to many people write it off as their mind is polluted by modern vampires or modern dracula stories and even modern retellings of van helsing and can't put all that away in a little box and thus find dracula boring as it doesn't have all the same flare to it. But it is like the ORIGINAL story, it's just awesome.
