how many more old schooler threads do we need...?

biggest thing for me was remembering when people back in the day played for fun and not 99s

I'm having a hard time remembering that.. Oh well, maybe it's because people ALWAYS played for 99s :)

Really? Because people had 99 woodcutting, fishing, firemaking, magic, smithing, mining and lots of other skills, before skill capes were introduced. Rendering your arguement invalid :)

- When many great players were banned for playing with knives

- when our freedom of speech was temporarily taken with a "runescape words only" auto spell.

- When songflower would sit at the hobgoblins with her chef hat on

- When everyone hated sleeping bags

- When players had to choose whether or not to transfer their bank to "runescape 2"

- when Calebtheboy fought Threegigs and owned him with a 0, 0, 1 combo (compared to gigs 0, 0, 0) before running away in victory.

- When stud690 carried around an inventory of rune axes, in which the world had never seen before.

- When slaying a dragon meant you were doing the quest

- When Falador seemed to be the place for player owned houses

- When the black hole was chilling in the dwarven mines

- When system messages would erupt in bright colors announcing players were banned

- When you could walk into the graveyard in the wild and have a nice conversation with sandytrain and friends.

- When there was 3 servers

- When my parents phone rang and it would disconnect me (and I still remember two people who killed me because of it: I wicked I and Lilrichard).

- When Christmas crackers were being dumped all over the ground by the first holiday drop

I used to poke fun at the lesser demons and pretended that they were cows; albeit very, very strong cows capable of killing me in a few hits. I used to think that killing them was a great feat, so I felt pretty damn proud when I killed the one in Melzar's maze.

I was really young when I played RSC so it's a bit of a struggle to remember but...

Scythes being dropped around Karamja Volcano

Clicking on rocks repetitively

Waiting in Varrock general store for good items OR space for your own items

That notes thing in Draynor

Yea, can't remember anything else right now.

I remember when my friend found the "greatest way to make money!!!!!!!". It involved buying silk from the trader in Al-Kharid then walking my butt all the way up to Varrock and then selling it at the general store for a 5gp profit each. It was mad cash. Then we panicked when "there was a crash!!!!!!!". Meaning someone hadn't bought out the silk we'd sold to the general store by the time we walked back. This cut our profits to 2gp each. Still, 50 gp. Pretty solid stuff.

Also, dying in the Dwarven mines from a KING SCORPIAN!

When my friend fell for a gold trimming scam. It was a high crime.

Being a "really high level miner". Meaning about mid 60s. I could mine coal in the mining guild and sell it at fally for 100gp ea. Now that was huge profit.

When killing the Kaliphite queen was a preposterous idea.

When my brother got fully addy. I was sooooooooooooooooooo jealous. I was stuck in my steel. Oh man.

Dying from the evil wizards south of varrock. "THEY AMBUSHED ME OUT OF NOWHERE! I DIDN'T STAND A CHANCE!!!!"

When someone with dragon armour was a god.

This is really sad. I made an account, straight out of Tutorial Island and I died to a level two spider. I thought my account was over so I made a new account.

When I convinced a friend to make a account so I could take his bronze arrows and runes.

When buying a rune pick was a bank busting investment.

I'll think of more.

-And D Meds were 1m - 1.5m and were the best armour in the game.

I remember when i collected my current party hat collection, Dragon medium helm was 2.5mill (about 2x phat sets worth)

i didnt bother waste for d med at time so i rather spent on phats and other rares...which now pays off since i still have them :P

- when our freedom of speech was temporarily taken with a "runescape words only" auto spell.

I remember it also it was fun as hell...we tried all dirty words what they came out in game lol

my name (M Oldfield) was showing as I Soldier in game.

- When songflower would sit at the hobgoblins with her chef hat on

I trained with her there alot...i kinda remember chefs hat too.

- When players had to choose whether or not to transfer their bank to "runescape 2"

I think it was that every bank got automatically transferred to RS2 but you had choise to transfer back ro RSC (but you needed to do it through website)

- When stud690 carried around an inventory of rune axes, in which the world had never seen before.

Stud was showing me one of first addy kites...he was friend of bluerose so he got items first.

I remember he went to play some other MMO with haxx0rmaxx and quit rs.

- When Christmas crackers were being dumped all over the ground by the first holiday drop

I think Pumpkins were first but i actually never saw them drop on ground but cracker i spotted appearing in level 30 wildy while i was training at hobs.

Fishing lobsters on Karamja, walking all the way to Draynor to cert and bank them. Then selling the certs to cooks to earn the first 100k(biiiiig money).

This.

I did it to obtain my first rune 2 hander for price tag of 300k. Back then it felt like enormous amount of grinding (even though it took only couple days). If I had already had the mentality back then, of being able to keep doing same thing for months, I would've been swimming in cash. Still wondering how much I would have now if I had got any sense in me and realised to invest on rares and keep them. Oh well, I was like 10 years old back then. 2001-2002.. Good times.

I remember first time seeing person over combat level of 100, I had to ask her if she was moderator. She wasn't.

Other good memories are picking up halloween masks from the ground at halloween event (got 4) and santa hats at christmas. Getting my first bronze full was also cool. Bought it from Varrocks general store. Actually camping at the general store, waiting for something good to appear and then try to snipe it, feels so nostalgic nowadays. You could even get lucky and get a rare for few geepees!

Ah well, it's the golden glasses of nostalgia. If the game looked like that and had as many flaws in the gaming as RSC used to have, I certainly wouldn't bother playing it anymore. Hard to face the facts, but the game has gotten so much better during these years. Actually speaking, I find the claims of RSC having "better community" and all that stuff very funny. RSC was full of backstabbers, scammers and botters, from what I remember. If that's the better community some of you miss.. Well.. :---)

to be honest, people always played for 99's. it's just, runescape used to actually be challenging and it wasn't "buy stuff from GE and grind for a week" to get a 99. you had to work for your levels and that's why 99's weren't as frequent, because they took longer to achieve.

I disagree. I never felt like the goal was to get 99 in X skill back in the day. No one cared, people just did something because they enjoyed it, or because they used it to make money.

The attitudes towards 99s DRASTICALLY changed when Skillcapes were released.

Your funny. Some people always have, but for the vast majority of RS, the 99 cape goals (especially firemaking/fletching/cooking) came AFTER skillcapes came out.

Here's something else I remember. When there were 3 people with maxed total on the highscores list. Why, I wonder? Well, simply because most people saw no point in 99s. Now there's several hundred I think, and counting. Well, less so now because of DG.... even so.

Yeah, I think amount of people with maxed total now vs pre-skillcape times prooves how drastically skillcapes changed it. N0valyfe (probably spelled wrong) Zezima and TheOldknite or something....those were the 3. Can't remember their names exactly, been years....but you get the picture. Pretty much everyone knew their names. Now? Yeah.

Squab unleashes Megiddo! Completed all quests and hard diaries. 75+ Skiller. (At one point.) 2000+ total. 99 Magic.
[spoiler=The rest of my sig. You know you wanna see it.]

my difinition of noob is i dont like u, either u are better then me or u are worst them me

Buying spins make you a bad person...don't do it. It's like buying nukes for North Korea.

Well if it bothers you that the game is more fun now, then you can go cry in a corner. :shame:

your article was the equivalent of a circumcized porcupine

The only thing wrong with it is the lack of a percentage for when you need to stroke it.

Hardly anyone went for 99's back then. Everyone fished/wc/mined for money instead of powermining iron or whatever.

And i don't think i ever saw anyone firemaking, like, at all.

Yeah, but some people DID play for 99's back then, but now they play for no reason or just play for skillcape. I was really addicted to magic, though... Trained at Ardougne guard dogs.. It was popular spot to train. Did anyone else train there? Also we trained at the dragon slayer thing with the keys to unlock doors.. It was very easy there but really no point going there when Ardougne was better.. I never got 99 Magic, btw :P I've just always been lazy...
