What are your Opinions of No-Lifers?

DON'T NAME NAMES :shame: Let them discuss it themselves.

I'll post a quote from the other Topic that I Agree with.

Unless, if you're saying EVERYONE has to be very soical and have GREAT jobs. If so, I apologize your highness.

There was no 'if' about my post. It was fairly explicit and easy to comprehend. But since you demand I clarify my position:

I'm not saying everyone has to be very social. I'm not even saying being very social is key towards health.

However, we humans are a sociable species. That's how we get on - by communicating to one another, doing jobs for each other and occupying certain niches. If it's unacceptable for a man to sit at home all day watching TV while doing nothing productive with their life, why is it suddenly acceptable for someone to play RS all day and 'no-life'? Or even more, why is it when we criticise such a lifestyle, it's unacceptable because it's none of our business?

Then add the fact some of these no-lifers won't have jobs (not necessarily high-paid jobs, but any job at all), and will therefore be living off their parents' income or even worse they'll be living off the state. For doing what? They're not disabled - they could get off their backside and contribute something to society quite easily.

I'm sorry, but I have massive problems with people who just leach off others and don't bother to contribute anything in return.

And as for the health issue, no, playing RuneScape all day is NOT socially healthy. Since so many people don't seem to know the definition of health, I'll post it:

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity

I've have thought it obvious to anyone with an IQ over 75 that spending hours upon hours on RuneScape, even if you're 'talking' to people on there, is NOT socially healthy, and frankly if you're playing for that long each day, it's questionable whether you have a psychological addiction (thus you're not mentally well either).

tl;dr version: It's severely unhealthy, and frankly as an adult you should be willing to work your way through life anyway.

To be honest, it's not really our place to judge those people who 'no-life' but when I do come across them, I make sure to let them know that staring at a screen for hours upon hours a day is not healthy regardless of what you're doing. When it's for a job, it's a "neccesary evil" that you must live with in order to make a living, but if it's for a game? :shame:

Also, like I always say in the 1853 times this topic has been made over the years, if someone is spending many hours a day playing Runescape (or any other game for that matter) some other part of thier life is being put on the backburner. Whether it's social life, career, even hygene that gets replaced by games, it has a negative affect on the persons life. Games are meant to be a way to pass your spare time, once they start to take over your normal life routine, then it becomes unhealthy.

we need to allow natural selection to work. forcing people to be what society wants them to be only slows down the process

Exactly. People that enjoy a game over relationships or people are much less likely to reproduce like minded people. :ugeek:

The context I made those comments in is different to what most people on TIF would appreciate, given we have a socialised healthcare system in the UK and there's more help for people who get themselves in a bad way (i.e. the "safety net" here is larger than it is in the US). I certainly don't think that's a bad thing, and in any case over recent years it's been slashed full of holes anyway, but there's obviously some level of judging there. The difference is is that it's not the 'sitting on a high horse' type judgementalism, it's a realistic assessment of how far someone should be prepared to helpselves before other people will come in to save them. Expecting other people to pay for your house and food whilst you sit on RS doing sweet FA is clearly not right, and yes, I'm judging there as a tax payer.

iirc - I made the post 2 1/2 yrs ago - the person I was replying to implied all judgementalism is wrong, including whether I should be judging people who play RS too much, which is just silly. Where judgementalism goes wrong is where it reaches statements like, "I don't like religious people 'coz they're clearly irrational for believing in God." or, "All level 138s need to get a life 'coz they play too much."

Like anything that has the potential for inducing addictive-like behaviour in life, balance and effect on wider life is key.

No-lifers can't be average weight, they have to be 100 pounds or 500. I call this "The 100 Rule". Any person within 100 pounds of 150 pounds is automatically disqualified from no-lifing.

Yay!!! I'm not a No-lifer!!

Who are we to judge how other people live their lives? And who are we to assume they are automatically unhealthy and/or nonsocial. We don't know their daily routine.

If you took the time to actually get to know some of the "no lifers", you would find that a majority of them live fulfilling lives; a majority more successful than those pointing their fingers at them. I have met a good number of players who put out good hours in game while still managing a household, family (spouses/children), their careers, and have the game for their down time. The same down time the majority of us waste sitting in front of the television or shooting it up on the console games (sorry to those who are out getting "laid" all day and night long. Because I'm sureee that's the case, especially when you too are sitting here on a runescape fan site bickering about people you've never met online)

It is easy to point our fingers and put down another person's lifestyle, but regardless of how someone chooses to live their life, it is not our right to shoot them down. They're not causing harm to anyone else. They're not out causing crimes. I say if someone finds happiness playing Runescape, then by all means, let them have their game of scape. Isn't it the main inspiration of every human to reach a level of comfortability and happiness? If that's theirs, then let them have it.

I was a no lifer/semi no lifer for a few years running. My high school grades suffered because of it. I didn't really socialize because I was homeschooled, and because Maryland has WAY fewer LDS people than my dreamworld of Utah. Being LDS also eliminated any real desire to get "laid" since I decided way back when to save myself for marriage. I even no lifed a bunch when I got to Utah and had no job. Now I have a full time job, and I'm getting ready for my mission. My opinion of no lifing is that it was fun, but I probably should have scaled it back a notch or two. After my mission, I might find myself saying "Man, I can't believe I spent 300+ days logged onto that silly game."

My hygiene never suffered as a result of the game. My weight is actually BELOW my combat level. And I would personally find eating even 20 or so hot pockets a day a challenge. I'm 2150 miles from my Dad's basement(my Mom died over 8 years ago). See above post about the job and getting "laid."

Hmm, your weight is under your combat level? That might actually be underweight tbh.

Anyway, to Mooky's comment above: Most people associate playing video games with playing on a console in a dark room under your house. That being said, most of them don't realize the social aspect of MMORPGs, and pretty much think any and all gaming is anti-social. However, interacting with people online is not the same as irl.

And if you eat more than 10 hot pockets a day, seek help

I calculated my BMI, I'm right on the lower end of healthy weight/upper end of underweight, but it's been like that for years, so I don't dwell on it. It will be a very shocking change one day when I actually have to watch what I eat, lest I become overweight. I was always a very solo-centric player though, I tried to solo GWD bosses day 1 for instance. I also played in a basement under the house in MD. And I definitely don't eat even 10 hot pockets a day. I was just trying to think how many I could comfortably eat, and what would be a challenge, and my numbers fell way short of 100.

Animals get laid by natural instincts. They were like biologically made to reproduce. But its too bad WE have to play stupid flirting games made by obnoxious, westernized,

indulging women to get anywhere close to sexual contact. It sickens me that having sex is a fundamental part of getting a life because it's unfortunately the majority

who doesn't have a triple digit IQ with an exceptionally large hormonal mind running the society. I have no basic definition of No-life that involves playing games or doing

something futile for a long period of time but I personally don't think it's ANY of my business to tell someone who's probably 1000s of miles across seas away from me what his life should be like. I have every right to govern my own life and I don't think anyone should tell me otherwise because it'll only make you sound like an idiot that I won't even listen to.

It sickens me too. Funny thing, back when Dungeoneering first came out, someone on these forums posted something like "I imagine many of those with high Dungeoneering levels also have high Virgineering levels." He was obviously trying to make fun of high level Dungeoneers, but reading that just made me feel happy and proud about my "high Virgineering level."

As stated by others in this thread, who the hell cares about how you spend your life. Whether it's having a job, getting a social life, getting laid (lol), joining the national sports team, or playing multiplayer games for hours on end, if they're happy with it then that's awesome. Really we shouldn't be scolding others that doing such and such is "no-lifing" - what if that person thinks the "regular" lifestyle doesn't suit him?

We have no right to control what others do, nor should we make fun of them for doing so.

I don't see how people have, for centuries, spent their lives doing pointless things like playing sports, playing random games/puzzles, going after women for the thrill of it, etc, and none of them are deemed to be the same kind of loser that a no-lifer is.

Once you really think about it, there's nothing that will really have any significance in life. 99% of the time, nobody will even mention your name 10 years after you die, except for your family and close friends who outlive you, so why not make life as enjoyable as possible doing what YOU want to do?

Not really fair tbh. I used to be a no-lifer even though i had a job, took multiple showers daily (gf ocd), i weigh about 130lbs at most and i live alone. also i get laid I used to get laid too. Its easy to jugle 6 hours of rs and 18 hours of life at the same time. you just need to get used to not sleeping a lot.

But i can't say i dont agree with this. I think it's unhealthy for people to spend ~10 hours a day playing a game when they could be out changing the world in their own small way. Not only does your health suffer, but so do your social skills. At the end of the day when you end up unemployed, poor, on the sidewalk with no one to feed you because you were too busy playing RS instead of growing up, your account wont mean jack [cabbage]. Your account won't bring you success in life, at all.

I failed college because of too much RS lol but everything happens for a reason

Ive always been healthy though I did No-life I kept my time for my hobbies like thai boxing

Just 3 hours a day. But it did take its toll.

Now i jus play when ive got the spare hour or two

Or when its sunday and i got a hangover (today)

And getting laid hmm done that but

honestly who really cares after youve jacked off? I for one don't even want to look at a pretty girl for a bit D:
