I'm about to start up on Paxil for depression (which my brother is already on), and I've been wondering if any other TIFers are taking any medications for various problems. If so (and I don't care if it's legal or illegal), what are you taking for it?

Also, what do you think about the medical system/facilities in your country?

So, basically Earthysun is Jesus's only son.

I won't take them unless I have to. Like for an infection or something.

I generally don't take crap like cold and flu medication, or paracetamol. I had severe depression for years and refused to take medication and got through it myself, I had panic disorder and have pretty much got though it myself apart from the odd anxiety here and there.

The occasional paracetamol if I'm not feeling right, but that's pretty rare. Other than that, I haven't had any other meds for years, even when I went through a bit of depression. I had the feeling that taking something for it would cement the idea in my mind that I couldn't deal with it myself and make it worse.

Last med I took was OTC dayquil/nyquil for a cold I had two months ago.

Last med I was prescribed was an anti-inflammatory for my knee, which I ignored and let it heal on its own.

I do have seasonal allergies, and when they become unbearable I'll take a clariten or whatever the generic off brand is. That's pretty rare though.

Dude, don't take Paxil. It's like Accutane for depression. Don't people research stuff before taking the rx? (I was on Paxil so I can testify)

I don't take meds, but I may start taking Adderall for ADHD, if I ever get around to it.

Something I forget the name of for alopecia. 12 pills daily, then 12-1x starting Monday. Just as fun as it sounds.

Inhaler for asthma, take as necessary. Usually necessary when I get colds, leading to...

Got over a cold recently as well, was taking nighttime Tylenol for that and some different brand for the day.

I frequently joke about the amount of drugs that I end up taking when I need them. I'm lucky that the most I have had to to deal with recently is random hair loss and the common cold though.

Aside from the occasional anti-histamine (dependency is a brutal cycle), I don't agree to use the majority of them, and I have refused them when suggested.

Interesting, is it not, that the number of kids "diagnosed" with ADD and ADHD climbs every year, and yet no one has postulated a cause bearing Occam's Razor in mind, and a solution that does not involve drugs? I'm certainly not suggesting that nobody requires such drugs as are prescribed, simply that they are over-prescribed for the benefit of pharmaceutical companies (along with schools, doctors, and parents.)

That's bound to happen when we learn more about medical science though. "New" illnesses come up, though probably existed under some blanket term before, then new drugs to treat them, and more efficiently. Long way from the days of cocaine as a cough medicine, right? Or solving problems with leeches?

Of course, there are bound to be downright unnecessary pills. Restless Leg Syndrome? The long list of side effects in every TV commercial? Cure your mildly harmless condition (May cause pneumonia, heart failure, death, diarrhea, pink-eye, and the shutting down of Madagascar)

Medicine may be an interesting field...

I have a close family member who is a pharmaceutical representative. It's a despicable career with many duties tantamount to bribery, but she can shrug off any criticism with a (not entirely inappropriate) reference to it being the result of the wonders of the free market.

But wouldn't it bother you to completely lack control over anything that you were responsible (at least in part) for producing? Or to find out that the elderly are being tricked into taking it for corporate profits? (As happened to both sets of my grandparents multiple times).

I'm assuming that you're not referencing the bribery, so yes, allowing pharmaceutical companies to operate without any restrictions is something that I am opposed to.

Simple: the goal of the pharmaceutical corporations is to provide the maximum amount of profit to their shareholders. This is accomplished through the externalization of the costs of their profit. Pollution (which has serious health risks) unnecessary medication (paper) obscene drug costs (link) and downright lies. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100924/04264711150/drug-rep-accidentally-admits-there-s-no-justification-for-massive-markup-over-generics.shtml

I am not on any medication at the moment, I generally try to stay away from medication if I can help it.

I used to use Devils claw gel (non medicated pain relief) on my shoulder as I have re-accruing tendinitis in my left shoulder and am fed up with taking diclofenac for it, when the DC gel works way better, and I generally just wing the pain I get from minor scoliosis....... I am 5 months pregnant now so DC gel is out of the question, and most medications are not all that good for during pregnancy, so I dont take anything except for the odd paracetamol, if the pain does get that bad - then I only take one instead of two.

I do take multi vitamins now but that is due to the pregnancy, before I got pregnant I didn't take any vitamins or anything.

The health system where I am seems to be OK, I have not had much need for medical help so far thankfully, I suppose April will be the time I find out how good it really is when Boo comes along.
