Guy
Righty. So, I'm transferring everything from Windows XP to a new install of windows 7. However, do I need Windows 7 Professional (as opposed to Home Premium) to run my XP programs? Or will home premium work? Person in the shop said i need Professional, and my google searches basically confirm this. I'd just like to double check though before spending a whole lot more money. Thanks. Guy
We're not psychic you'll have to tell us WHAT programs for us to be able to answer.Just programs designed for XP before 7 came along. Games such as flight simulator x, rise of nations, sony vegas 9, etc.My question is not about whether they work on 7, I know about the compatibility checker. My question is do I need home premium or professional. RIP TET "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." - Friedrich Nietzsche
Sy_Accursed
We still need to know the programs. As things vary from program to program. Some may run in home premium while others may not. das
We still need to know the programs. As things vary from program to program. Some may run in home premium while others may not. He listed a few programs...I'm not too sure how you missed that one really. According to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/Windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Software&p=Microsoft%20Rise%20Of%20Nations%3A%20Rise%20Of%20Legends&v=Microsoft&uid=&l=en&pf=7&pi=9&s=Microsoft%20picture%20It&os=64-bit is compatible and flight simulator is too - however version checking makes it tricky for older xp games. Windows 7 home premium does have a "compatibility mode" I believe.- but if you're looking at a vast game library - the "virtual xp" on professional may be up your alley. I didnt miss it, he listed a few examples but still just said he wanted to know about "programs designed for xp"It is therefore still valid to point out we need to know the programs to have any hope of saying which will work in which edition; afterall a fair few work in home without xp mode; yet equally a fair few wont work without xp mode tht pro offers. Corvus
Well, I can confirm that Rise of Nations works in Windows 7.(I repurchased the original and expansion pack on a 1 DVD set last week as my brothers misplaced the original disks) Out of all the software I have tried to use on a Windows 7 machine, the only types of programs I have found to not work are poorly supported device drivers, such as Texas Instrument's TI-84 interface drivers (works in the XP VM) or a 2001 Canon scanner driver (simply doesn't work at all), of course that is excluding all the software that didn't work on Windows XP in the first place. Guy
Cheers for all of the answers. The way to go I think is I will buy Premium then if needs be, buy an upgrade pack to Professional. If anyone else has information regarding Premium vs Professional in terms of compatibility of Win XP products, that would be great (my issue isn't with Win7 compatibility in general, just whether or not Home Premium will be able to run Win XP programs) RIP TET "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Home premium CAN run some xp programs, but not all.Hence a list of the programs you wish to run would be beneficial to getting a full answer. However it seems most answers arent specifying the info you need so your idea of trying premium first is probably a good idea. Sbrideau
I made the error of buying Pro since I was getting it for the XP Mode, but over 1 year later, I still have yet to use it. Your programs will work on Windows 7 Home Premium.
Doomster
The other issue with Pro's "XP Mode", is that it runs a virtual XP with a pretty weak emulated graphics card, so it's really for mission critical business applications. If you have a game that won't run in Windows 7 or under "compatibility wizard" (which is included in Home Premium), then it's unlikely to be usable in "XP Mode".
