Free Trade update - possibly reviving The Gallery also?

Few years back, The Gallery used to be section filled with extremely talented artists. It still is, but now it's more of fun based, and alot of styles have completely vanished. Back in the days especially pixel signatures used to have huge fanbase, and those artists like misterxman, Jeppoz, DementedHero and alot of others (some more or less), did pixel signatures in exhange of RS currency (I'm not exactly sure if the examples I gave were doing that, or what extent).

For pixel signature they used to charge RS coins, items or even rares, depending on their skill and fame. Best artists could make huge fortunes, making pixel signatures to somewhat famous RS players.

It seems that pixel signaturing has vanished into very close to extinction, and only the most fanatic artists keep doing occasional pieces. Now theres a chance that this might come back, would it? Is there still enough pixel artists playing RS, they would bother? To answer this question for my behalf, I personally could do it. Funny enough I just happened to start again a while ago, and adding 1+1 for game success and hobby doesn't really sound too bad. Especially considering there are alot of fairly afkable skills like mining, fishing, woodcutting and even fletching and cooking to some extent - it would leave quite a bit of time for doing something simultaneously.

What do you think about this possibility? Would you personally be willing to pay RS credit for pixel signature (if you still play that is)? How much could one charge for pixel signature? Do you even agree this kind of way of changing hobby into "work"? Thoughts, please!

EDIT: While I seriously started to think about it, I came to realize how many great possibilities the RS of nowadays offers for a pixel artists. All the new shiny armours, weapons, monsters, places... No need to paint that same old rune platebody for every other charecter in pictures. :???:

Yep. From the rules of the Art Bazaar:

Most importantly, please remember that anyone offering to make you artwork here is doing it for free and on their own time. The only thing they get in return is your gratitude and satisfaction, so please be patient when awating for your request to be fulfilled.

I'm not 100% but I think charging for pictures, even with GP became banned before the RWT update.

Hmm, interesting. However it seems like Jagex has taken a step backwards with the RWT aswell, or why else would they bring free trade back. And I'm not exactly sure how much are signatures considered as real world trading. There is no real money involved.

And by the way, I am quite sure I remember quite a few pixel artists (including couple good friends of mine) doing pixel signatures in exhange of real money on these forums. I think it was "against the rules" but mostly all moderators did about it was to tell everyone it was their own business - and not to burst about it on forums - instead discuss it via private messages.

What is the moderators stand on this nowadays? Also, it's fairly safe to take note that getting scammed is basically impossible on pixel signature "trades". After all the pixel signature is made first, and the watermarked version is shown to the buyer before the transaction.

Trading signatures for RuneScape items is a violation of the RuneScape rules, and was before RWT was removed ;)

RuneScape Rule

Game items must only be exchanged for other items/services within the game. Exchanging game items for items or other benefits in other online games, real-life money or other real-life benefits is not allowed.

A signature would be "other real-life benefits."

More specifically:

5. Am I allowed to accept a forum signature as payment for an item?

Forum signatures are not items or services in-game, therefore you are not able to accept these as payment for an item in RuneScape.

So as it is against the RuneScape Rules, it is also against our forum rules ;)

Okay thanks, trips.

However, isn't it quite easy to go around this kind of rules? I mean, basically if I wanted to "sell" signatures, I could just take donations. I mean, people are giving (even currently) free rares away if free trade comes.

I'm quite certain no rule would forbid me from taking donations? And no rule would really forbid me for making signatures for people. So all I'm saying that, while this rule might actually exist - I take it that it's actually quite impossible job for either forum or jagex moderators to do anything about it.

Thereforth I'm questioning why does these rules exist. I suppose I'll ask more from JaGex if the free trade comes. :) I know you guys, as crew of respectable site, have to keep up with Jagex rules, even if they didn't make much sense.

Well, we try to stick to the Jagex rules, so naturally if there was a way around it we wouldn't talk about it ;)

Also, they never charged for sigs, I've been aquantened with Misterxman countless times and I know him (and others) never forced players to pay for artwork.

In theory if we were once again allowed to sell signatures I'm almost positive The Gallery would flourish like the older days but as Tripsis has pointed out it is against runescape rules so thus ours. The donation argument I think would be a probable workaround but you'd have to take that up with Jagex and I doubt they'd allow it.

Unless they track your character after seeing you sell artwork on a forum, there's indeed no way for Jagex to enforce that rule.

I think the best solution for everyone is to keep it private. That way the forum doesn't have to deal with Jagex being angry with them, and the buyers/artists are better protected.

Of course, I don't mean to encourage people to break Jagex's rules. This will always be an unsupported, at-your-own-risk business.

Pixel art sure made good money back in the days. I guess I just lost interest in it when I lost interest in RuneScape. I've quit playing years ago, and I have no plans on returning.

Pixel art is still fun though. It's been a while since I've done that, perhaps I should give it another shot, just for fun.

Personally, I am fully okay with someone offering virtual goods (in this case, RS Gold) in exchange for virtual works of art. Not only okay, but positive that I would be the type of person who would follow through and pay someone in exchange. However, as it is against the rules of Jagex, it is against the rules on Tip.It. I wouldn't exactly chase anyone if they made light mention of it and did it, but as an official in the Gallery, I am not officially saying it is okay.
