GottaGetDownOnfriday
I have bought a couple of domains from Godaddy.com (nullbrain.com being my current active one). Basically you choose a domain and if it is available, you will be able to buy it. Some domains cost more based on key words in the domain name. Some sites sell domains for more, but offer services such as information protection, hosting, etc. Keep in mind, without information protection, anyone can access information about you such as your name and phone number by performing a whois lookup on your domain name. Typically when you choose a domain name you would use ".com" as an extension. The ".com" extension is the most known worldwide. Here is a site which explains more about domain names. Domain parking is mainly used to reserve domain names for later use or to prevent people from copying your website name. If I wanted to, I could reserve nullbrain.org, nullbrain.net, etc. Usually when you park a domain, you can specify if you want it to redirect to a specific URL or you can have it display a default page. I hope this helps with your questions. 65,280 to 99 fletching on 3-14-0940,405 to 99 woodcutting on 10-17-2009
Quorra
Some domains cost more based on key words in the domain name. Are you sure about that? I'm fairly certain the cost only changes depending on the top-level domain (.com, .com.au, .info etc etc)

obfuscator
In general most domain names will be the same except for the level (.com most expensive). You can by domains many places, check ICANN for more info. I hope you're not considering domain squatting though.....as that is frowned upon and doesn't work much anyway. obfuscator
If he has a legitimate claim to it, yes. He's domain squatting...if he has no legitimate claim to it then you can take him to court. noble_aloof
Thanks for the replies.. the reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking of starting up a site over the summer and the name happens to consist of 4 letters (somewhat obscure). The domain is currently parked and when i go to buy it (from Sedo which i believe is a reputable broker) it asks me to make an offer. the page has only recieved 140 views in the past month and I'm actually considering making an offer of up to $500 and then parking the domain until the summer at which point I hope to make it into a somewhat profitable website. From what I read prior to making this post is that parking a domain could also earn you a small amount of money if it is a popular search term. My plan (though kind of irrelevant at this point) is to develop the site as a small way to make money which will mainly be through ads (goal of $20-50 per month). Through the money made I hope to pay for the domain cost and any hosting fees by Christmas 2011. If the site is getting a decent amount of traffic but falling short of monthly goals, I would ideally try to sell the site and domain for 2-5 times what I paid for it. If I would be unable to do that I would probably end up parking it and hoping to get a good offer eventually. I'm 16 years old and still a little naive to things, $500 is quite a bit of money to me but I think it would be a worthy undertaking. Can anyone speculate as to the actual price of a 4 letter domain (word not in dictionary)? edit: did a lot of research today and the .org or .net (can't remember) version of the domain is going for $2499. Damn.
