Are you a DJ?

Ohi fellow TIF people!

I don't think there's a topic like this already (if so, feel free to prove me wrong), so I thought I'd make one.

So, are you a DJ?

If the answer is yes, feel free to share you recent sets with us, or tell us about some gigs you recently did, you may even want to show us your equipment.

Since I started this thread, it won't surprise you that I myself am a DJ, so to start of the thread:

Here's one of my sets. I know the quality is not that good, should get an external soundcard for recording (this was recorded with my webcam :D). Enjoy ;)

That's where it all started for me too, Virtual DJ :)

Bought this little thing, and started playing around with it. After a couple of months I felt like I needed something bigger and that's when I bought my current setup :)

I've been planning to buy dj equipment for years but never had the cash.

Plus I think the whole teenage girl thing will end soon (hopefully), because my girlfriend is absolutely in love with him(she is 18), and im beginning to feel threatened by his [Justin Bieber] dashing looks.

I got lucky. Was browsing ebay when I stumbled across the beauty that I can now call my own.

It's 2500 store price, bought it for 500 (euros that is)

Just find someone to split it with? That's what I did, 250 isn't really that much when you make 100 each saturday :D

I worked there for 2 weeks and got fired because of ticking clock cheating:p

Now I'm a Colruyt employee.

I won't be attending any more classes this semester so I'll have a lot of spare time on my hands. What would you recommend for a beginner? I don't want to spend more than 200-300.

Don't think you'll find anything decent with 200-300, so what I'm suggesting is buying a midi controller just to get a hang of it (it's around 50-100) and save up for something bigger if it turns out you really like it enough to make that big of an investement

I'm a sort of DJ. I have about seven or eight mixes using Ableton under my belt, but I'm actively getting better at live mixing. I use Ableton Live 7 and an Akai LPK 25 midi controller. That's it. Seems to work just fine too, though. Hoping to work at the radio station at my college this summer and get some real experience under my belt.

been mixing since i was 14!! vinyl mainly but i bought serato vinyl emulation shees like 5months ago.

damn man i wish id recorded some mixes that wernt out of time.. i thought serato would make it easier to mix different genres but ive actually found it harder because of rounding the bpm to 1.

used to mix dnb

then dubstep and techno

now dubstep, techno, house mainly aswell as electro swing, dnb and hip hop.

dont like were dubstep is going though, OP have u been mixing dubstep for a while or in the last 2 years? i hate this grimer than ur mum thing. its all about the step and the bass. none of this emo [cabbage]e.

does anyone else mix with vinyl? or do clubs?

im gunna start clubs this october when i go to uni, only done like 5 parties with around 100 ppl at, one was 300 but i zonked hard. i think im awesome at mixing, save the beat matching =z.

hell i do have a mix on my comp i could share.. its new dubstep tho so i dont really like it that much.. gnna listen now n figure if its too embarassingly out of time to share.

love this thread.

btw im on stanton t80s atm with a crappy numark mixer, the standard blue one with a few not too great effects. none of my mates in real life are that into mixing, ive got like 2 friends that mix and only one on vinyl.

would love to hear your techniques.

peace

edit: sorry didnt read your post that well, you dont mix with vinyl dam.. i hope someone on here does.

nice mix though man, its not the dubstep i hate lol.

edit:

yeah man you've inspired me to get a soundcloud, listening to the mix though it's not that great, also the sound quality sucks because i raise the volume over the mix and clip the thingy. loving my rewinds lol. it sucks, one of the phasers? i think thats what theyre called, on my mixer is broken and always at max so the gain twiddlers have to be practically nothing, which is very hard to soundcheck.

anyways, heres my mix.

err it goes out of time as soon as mix the first song :S

anyways i can do the whole mix in time now so jkust imagine it is

Ive been wanting to learn but job-wise you need to basically be a drunken party goer EVERY DAY (basically fastortoise) for them to consider you, regaurdless of mixing/pc experience.

decided im going to perv on this topic...

depends what u mix. if you mix chart then u dont need much experience and u need to stay up late.

but mixing isn't a viable ocupation unless your really good or make your own tunes. u shudnt be thinking about the work side, its just fun.

plus if u specialise ina genre, say dubstep, you can get nights easy at a club.

but yeh do it for the fun bru :) unless your definate id advise downloading traktor from tpb to start with.

bon chance

Good to see this topic is still alive!

Freakyhair, I know mixing with vinyl gets your more respect, but it just seems like such a hassle to get all the songs you want. Now I can just go to iTunes store, click buy, burn it and TA-DA, I have a new song! I wouldn't even know where to start my search for the songs I wanted. I also tried checking out your mix, but the link seems broken?

Oh by the way, I just recorded a new mix, be sure to check it out and tell me what you guys think!

Dubstep Mix 2

Also, I'm doing my first little performance in a few weeks, hoping I won't be too nervous though..

have a beer or two, definately helps. splif and other drugs DEFINATELY dont stay away!

and ive got it so that i have both, serato vinyl emulation basically means i have control with vinyl of any song on my comp. plus the option to use vinyl. if your proper pro you need vinyl standard/stupidedly high cd standard i think., but if i was going to start again i would do what your doing, im jsut used to mixing vinly. link not broken for me. but i just listened to it again, i wudnt want anyone else to hear it to be honest :P

am away from home right now and dont have decks but when i get back in a couple of months ill post a few mixes

that nightlife mix is nice btw dude!

I'm thinking about starting.

I have a friend who mixes dubstep that I'm going to talk to about good starter programs and where to get em.

Probably buy some DJ equipment when I get back from my deployment this year.

Some people are more likely to get paranoid when they smoke^^ So don't do it unless you're a regular smoker
