Luring

Luring is the act of leading another person who is carrying considerable wealth into a dangerous situation with malignant intentions.

Many of us have been lured before, but some haven't.

Many obvious lures that I've seen:

PK/MUSIC vid lure:

A player approaches you and asks you to use 1 item in his/her video.

Once you arrive in the wilderness, they will drop 4 noted items that have a lesser G.E value and a higher alch value.

ex. Lurer drops 4 noted dmeds, Innocent player that has dragon hatchet picks up the items and is killed and loses his hatchet.

Clan wars lure

A Lower-levelled player will challenge a higher level to a unsafe clan war (Items dropped on death).

The lower-levelled player's higher levelled friends will then enter the clan war and destroy him and take his items.

Blessed spirit shield PK / Ancient statuette PK

You are fighting an opponent that is wielding a blessed spirit shield, and you have an Armadyl Godsword.

Both of you are skulled. You defeat your opponent and loot his blessed spirit shield and then a person comes and kills you while you are trying to flee the scene. You lose your AGS because of the alch value of the Blessed Spirit shield.

People have lost Divines and Elysians because of the ancient statuette lure as well (same situation, except the person has the statuette in his/her inventory).

I was approached by someone on [Caution: Jagex Rule Violation] who lures frequently... He told me he wanted to lure with me and that he would talk for me.

He told me to gear up and sit in clan wars and wait for his lures to come in... As soon as he saw me welfaring, he freaked.

He told me to get up to 85m in gear, and at that moment, I realized that he was luring me all along.

Lures are getting more complex.

tl;dr DONT TRUST ANYONE

What is your take on luring?

How have you been lured?

Have you ever anti-lured (countered a lure)?

EDIT:

ALSO!!!!!!!!!!!

Beware of communicating with runescapers via Skype or IRC.

Your IP could be "sniffed" out through various programs.

The lurer/scammer could then use it to DDoS you while you are risking millions.

EDIT #2:

So [Name blocked for privacy reasons] and I team with [Name blocked for privacy reasons] in a clan wars lure.

[Name blocked for privacy reasons] is a level 56 with claws. He challenges a level 63 to a dangerous clan war match.

All three of us rush in and kill, Poppy gets the kill and its 20m. He said I would get a split after we do two lures. He said we completed one and that we needed one more for the luring video.

This was, in my opinion, rigged to earn my trust. I NEVER GOT A SPLIT OF THE 20M.

Later, a level 134 named Namyaila approached me and demanded i fight him BANK vs BANK.

He put up 63m in items, I put up 63m in cash.

He would challenge me to a dangerous clan wars battle and my two partners ([Name blocked for privacy reasons] and [Name blocked for privacy reasons]) would rush in to help.

I went in, then left because I thought that it was a stupid thing to risk 63m...

Then we went at it again and I stayed until the match started, but I stood next to the portal for easy escape.

While my two partners risked 80m each to earn my trust, I thought they would stand there while Namyaila (who i thought was with them) would kill me.

I WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

On our skype chat, it was me,[Name blocked for privacy reasons] (Skype name: ********), and [Name blocked for privacy reasons] (Skype Name: *********) Then all of a sudden, ******** joins the chat and starts talking and says "HEY DILLON YOU RUINED THE 60m LURE? HAHA YOU'RE AN IDIOT" (my skype name involves my IRL name, Dillon)

They went on to taunt me and ridicule me saying that I ruined a lure and because of that, I would never get a split of the 20m lure. (WHICH I BELIEVE WAS RIGGED FOR MY TRUST)

An hour after the event, I looked at the profile of the kid who came in and started taunting me and saw that his Skype username was "Namyaila"

I sent this exact pm to a mod at [Caution: Jagex Rule Violation] forums and included a chat log. This guy who tried to lure me is already temporarily banned from [Caution: Jagex Rule Violation] for selling a DDoS tool.

I think JaGeX should make a warning (Yeah, I know they have a lot, but this one might help) telling primarily new players of certain scams. e.g. dropping four items scam, clan wars, etc.

Lately, I've taken to using the banker's box in the Clan Wars section of the Gamer's Grotto to work on my herblore skill. It's a one-click box AND I can "collect" from it while training.

I've watched numerous efforts to lure players into the Dangerous Portal -- some more cunning than others.

Frankly, I don't understand why the Dangerous Portal is still around.

Just dont go for things that are too good to be true....

The only time that I was (almost) lured was when a lvl 138 was having a "Quitting game drop party"

It seemed very legitimate and a person who was conspiring with her (unkown to me and others) "Received" Bandos tassets and chest and acted like he got them from a trade window race.

Then she said that the person with the highest value inv would win d claws and that we could go to a bank.

(This is when I realized that this was a lure)

I went to the bank, got a DDP+, and dharoks platebody and legs, 3 acorns a bucket, cheese, 3gp, and a monks robe bottom.

Then another guy (with the scammer) "Won" the bank game

Then she told us to go to one of the german language servers and that we would have another teleport, then trade race.

It was an Ice plateau tele, I knew it was and i went with my 3 valuable items and random junk to piss off the lurers. There was 5 guys ranging from lvl 75-112 and then the lvl 138 of course. Me and a few other guys that followed my example with the 3 items and junk strategy fought bravely and I took a guy down, I poisoned him and got him down to almost no health with my dds and when I died I put retribution on so he went with me, I hope they enjoyed the 3gp and acorns.

Lol @ bladewing

I think that luring through trickery is fine but not with statuettes and stuff

If someones dumb enough to bring their items into dangerous clan wars it's their own fault

Statuettes' alchemy value needs to be changed

It's great you know what you're talking about rustiod. Everything you've said is 100% accurate a true.

That being said...your a [bleep]ing [bleep] douchebag, and none of your advice will ever (or should ever) be taken seriously because of it.

disregard good advice because the giver is a douche

THAT MAKES YOU A BETTER PERSON

I have never got lured, but scammed twice, in respectively March and October 2007. The first one was me buying a whip for.. 1.2m if I recall. So some kid in bank was by his saying , trading his "whip" for a red boater. Outside bank somebody was selling a red boater for 1.1m. I bought it, the "whip seller" logged out and I discovered red boaters were 50k. Rofl.

in oct 2007 , i was @ duel arena, someone wanted to max on me and used a popular scam that time. They give you food so u can eat while hes maxing on u. and u have to show items. so they know how much space you got. then they like give u as many food as fits ur inv, but ur concentrated on the food and i accepted with my whip still in trade screen :(

Thanks for a nice post TBK. I would like you to add a section about lurers who lure monsters on you. I was at Dagannoth Rex and was trying to earn cash in a fair way, when i got lured on, not once but twice within 10min. Things like this just makes you loose the spirit of trying. I think luring should be punished badly IF POSSIBLE.

Unfortunately, all the events in this thread are legitimate lures. You're not being tricked into Dangerous PvP, you're willingly going with the hope of getting money from someone else.

The "keep high alc" scam is the worst though cause Jagex is solely to blame for it's messed up system of using only hi alc. They have a perfectly good GE to use as the guide or BETTER YET, let players "tag" items kept on death. However, until that fix, it's legitimate to use because you're choosing to pick up the items (still shady as all get out).

As for DK Luring, that's using the same word for two different terms. Complaining about DK luring is bad and should be banned is like complaining about some "stealing" your blue dragon kills and should be banned because stealing is illegal.

It's not like complaining about someone stealing your monster/spot, because the lurers were not in the world few minutes later when i returned. They crashed lured on me Supreme to get me killed.

Again, that's complaining about a game mechanic that's purposely set that way. It's multi-way combat so all players can attack any of the monsters. As such, it works better as a team than alone. That you want to AFK at a place like that means you willingly put yourself at risk. People have lured the chaos elemental to near the teleportals for fun kills, which is not abuse a hidden game flaw. Now, if there's some sort of game BUG that's being exploited here, then report them as such.

I agree, there should be changes to the death drops, cause that's exploited to work on ignorance and not greed. Most the lures noted above exploit greed, in the wilderness no less. In your case, you want easy kills without being killed in a dangerous, multi-way environment. On the bright side, it's fairly easy to get anywhere before your tomb collapses.

Your point sounds right. It stinks that they do that, but if you punish lurers, then you might as well restrict everything, which would be stupid.

Rofl I remember some lure in like 2006-2007 when some ahrim-wearing barragers were standing in wild, and dropped a cash pile in lvl 2 wild or so. some lvl 63 or whatever ran by, and telegrabbed the cash. Funny thing is most lurers put 100k on tle floor since money isnt changing in appearance from 100k+ afaik. This tiime however the lurers put 12m there LLL so that 63 telegrabbed 12m and walked away

An easy anti-lure for the noted items that have a high high alch value, just bring a few high alchs with you and high alch one (or two without prayer) of the 4 items

Better still; low alch them so that when you die and drop the coins there is even less gp for the person luring.

Maybe someone can tell me whether this was a lure. This level 130+ asked me to be in his "vid." He insisted that I wear h'ween mask and good armour "so that the vid would look good." He asked me to tele to trollheim, which I did (with an inventory full of food and a 1-click, just in case). His buddy was there and they were saying for me to "follow" them to the spot where we would shoot the vid. I teled instead, but I'm not sure what they could have done to me up there. Any ideas?

We all knew DK luring would make a major resurgence after lootable graves. It sucks, but people in RS are greedy, malicious [wagon] because there's almost no accountability in an online game. So knowing that DK luring is a possibility, always be prepared to switch to Mage Pray or tele.

That said, DK luring is different than Wildy luring and should be treated differently. DK luring, while dishonorable, is perfectly within the mechanics of the area. It's meant to be a dangerous area, and there's nothing wrong with it.

Wildy luring plays on the greed and ignorance of other players and is tantamount to item scamming. Wildy luring WAS against the rules in the old Wild and it fell under the umbrella of item scamming. In fact, Jagex once decided to legalize luring, and a major ****storm occurred on the forums. Many player mods resigned because of their disgust with Jagex, and in the end, Jagex reversed their decision and made it illegal again. I have no idea why they are turning the other cheek now. I guess it falls in with the cavalier attitude towards rule breaking which they've developed recently.
