Elaborate scams and how to exploit them

With the return of free trade, there comes back many new scams. Some of them were old school (Armor Trimming) and some of them very interesting. So here are a few that I've seen. Please post scams that you've seen to inform fellow players and so we get to lulz at them in game by exploiting the scammers for our own gains.

Doubling Item: It seems pretty obvious until you see the first person to get their claws doubled. But that person is actually a friend of the scammer. This works very similarily to the "selling whip 5m" "buying whip 7m" scam. I have seen people lose BGS -> Claws to this scam. The only way to prevent yourself from falling for it is to understand how it works. I have been able to exploit the scammer to a degree by letting him double small amounts of cash (50k->100k->200k->400k was the furthest I've gotten in 15 minutes of work). Scammers for this tend to wait for the big money such as GS/Claws to come over before logging out. If you see someone about to trade him anything such as a GS/GWD armor/Barrows/Claws etc you can warn everyone around and bust the scam wide open.

Dungeoneering Cape: Credit to "Thewizard" On Tip it forums who posted here to first inform everyone of this scam. This post explains the scam much more clearly than what I can fit onto here. It is easy for 99 dungers to expose this scam (simply pull out your cape and rings and show to everyone around you what he is doing). Other than that its just stay away and go find trustworthy flower/dice games.

4 item lure: This post by TBK explains the lures very clearly. Best way to counter this is to bring high alchs and alch the noted Rune Halberd or Dragon B-axe that was dropped and scuffle away with the profits.

Clan wars dangerous lure: Not much you can do about this other than to just stay away from the red portal and clan chats that participate in dangerous clan wars. If it sounds too good to be true, it normally is.

Lava Titan Tele Lure: Someone trades you a lava titan asking you to tele them to a place. The titan actually teleports you to high wilderness just outside of Lava Maze where a team is ready to kill you. The best way to counter this lure for me is to be in a clan that pks. Stall the lurer by being stupid while calling up a 15 minute pk trip with your clan to hit the lava titan spot. Free claws for the clan :)

My lame drops:

Kid tried to lure me to assist him smithing for 2m with a lava titan. 'derp use this tele to an anvil.'

Same thing happened to me... And the thing is, just yesterday, my friend fell prey to the exact same person and lost his yellow phat+100m.. What a [bleeP].

I just laughed at him though and thanked him for the glory he gave me.

Haha, I had a really bad money "tripler" (actually doubler) yesterday. I also started out with the small amounts and I offered him like 100 gp, 500 gp, then 1k. Then it appeared that the scammer got bored because next time (I kept promising him I'd put up 500k eventually) I gave 10k and the scammer doubled it without even taking my gold first. Did that two more times until 50k. Then I put up 500k and he clicked accept trade. I was like, "Can you do it like last time, please? No? Oh well, I have enough money anyway...) So yeah, won almost 100k on that one guy.

You seriously have to be a [wagon] to fall for any scam in runescape. I've went 5 years of playing without being scammed, once.

everyone says this but its so not true, u just have to click twice without thinking properlly. ive played 7 years and been scammed in trade once, this was bnefore all the anti scam updates but i wsa selling a mage book, someone showed me 5k mage logs, discarded screen asked if it was alright and then traded again, i accepted quickly then realised it was maples :(.

But yeah i SO nearly got scammed for 200m the other day by the whole free rune scims thing, im definately not stupid just sometimes u forget to be cautious.

Anyway i think this thread is absolutely pointless, theres constant threads of this kinda nature, lures and scams. just stfu already please.

I've seen so many scams, but haven't fallen for any of them, if it's too good to be true, it most likely is

I really don't understand why people would think that other players would stand at the G.E or wherever doubling money for the hell of it or "because they're quitting" ...

I always exploit money doublers for some quick cash.

They almost never log out before you give them ~800k (although one dude logged out on me for 50k... lol), so it's safe if you go with small ammounts. It starts getting dangerous if you go over 500k, but I've done it a couple of times without having the guy log out on me.

Max I got a guy to double me was 800k. I got like 1.7M off that guy.

I've only been scammed once but it was pretty much an obvious scam and should have seen it from the start. The best way to avoid a scam is to avoid doing anything out of the ordinary. If you go and do a slayer task, attend a clan event or a farming run (whatever), you shouldn't become the victim of a scam.

How come you said Dungeoneering Cape is a scam, and go find a trustworthy flower game?

I tried the dungeoneering cape game with someone and it was legit, made a few mil.

Doubling money is my favorite scam. They assume anyone offering less than 100-500k or so is just gonna be like "OMG he can do it!!!!!!!" and tell everyone. I like to put up 100k (or 200k if I'm feeling daring) evry single time I go through the GE.

I then immediately yell how its a scam with his name, and I report him. Haha.

I have no idea how much cash I have made working over the scammers. I hate them so much.

All skills not named "Dungeoneering" - 50+

Come to my Clan chat (I'm there if I'm online) if you wish to borrow a Green H'ween mask, Blue H'ween Mask, Red H'ween Mask, or Santa for a reasonable price.

Long ago when i was a noob in full black i fell foul of the "Trim Armour" scam, lost my plate, i was extremely upset, gave that guy grief whenever he showed online for months... I suppose that made me weary. Then one day in fale many months later a guy says would i buy a whip quick sale half price, im interested of course... So he says his friend is selling it, follow him and we can do the deal. I have tele runes, 1m cash, normal clothes on no armour... We go in fale park, he says take this candle and tinderbox, then trade me it when we go down... Ok... by now im curious, but happy to play along, and see if there is such a cheap whip for sale...

We go down into the giant moles tunnels, he trades me, asking for candle&tinder box.... so i trade him it

Then he trades me with a whip, closes window, does it again... keeps doing it, but i notice i am being attacked, its dark, and slowly im losing health... "Trade me he says... quick"...I give up when i get to 50% health...tele back to fale, run down to the entrance to mole, and he shows, so i trade him... "Sell it to me now" Say's i... he teles away.

I just lost 25k from a Doubling Money guy, l0l. How sad.

Anyways, the golden rule to avoid scamming: If it's too good to be true, it's too good to be true.

Ex: If you see someone saying something like "Flower game, 1 mil wins santa", then they are 99% likely to be a scammer.

The probability of them losing is around 1/7. So lets say it takes 10 tries for someone to win, they are technically "selling" their santa for 10m. Would anyone sell their santa for 10m nowadays? Nope. Scam.

To exploit Doubling Scam you could say if you double my 500K I'll let you double Claws or whatever, then just take the 1M they double becacuse those greedy people want those D Claws. lolz. :shades:

Nah, they are generally smarter than that, and if you say something like that they'll just keep your first offer.

Someone asked me to tele them to tzhaar earlier. I tried explain you can't do that. They said yes, look, traded. So I traded and they offered me a lava titan pouch.

I was like. Really? You think i'm dumb enough to tele myself into the wildy wearing Arma gear? Moron.
