DevBlog 7th March - The Clan Camp

Location, location, location

The premise for the clan camp was to create an area where clans can meet up, chat and recruit new members. With this in mind, it became apparent we would need a suitably large and open area for the camp. This meant the area south of Falador was an ideal location, as it was large enough for all the sections of the camp and ideally placed for players to reach.

Once the location of the camp was decided, we then planned out the layout. This meant balancing aesthetic design with gameplay elements to come up with an attractive yet functional area.

Pitching camp

The Gamesmaster and Head of the Guard

The look and feel of the camp has been designed to give it a temporary appearance, much like a travelling circus. We achieved this by using canvas tents and structures built mainly from the wood found in the area.

As we wanted to make the new camp as accessible as possible for players, and to make it as obvious as we could when the player is inside the camp, we used the old path layout as a base and created three large entrances, plus a few smaller entrances as shortcuts into the camp, all of which is encompassed by a rope fence.

The design of the camp interior has been created around three separate hubs. At the centre of each of these hubs sits a key structure that the player will be able to interact with. The central hub allows the player easy access to the camp noticeboard, waiting area tent and two important new characters: the Games Master and Head of the Guard. These two cool characters have been created especially for the camp - they have their own themed tents and their own unique animations to define their personalities!

Branching off from the central hub, we have an area set up to allow players to create new clans and actively recruit new members to their clan. In this area, we also have another new character - the clan scribe - who at first glance might look out of place in a tent, all dressed up in his suit and bow tie, but he is in fact an important part of the camp (and takes his job seriously!). He also comes with new, unique animations that express his personality.

The third hub is an area that's still under construction and features an important structure unlike any other in the camp.

Concepts of flavour items

Once we had the layout of the camp with its main areas mapped down, we began adding in flavour pieces to make the camp believable. This included items such as campfires, crates, carts, etc. Anything you'd expect to see in a lived-in camp such as this.

With the camp looking great, we decided to update the rest of the area by adding our new tree designs. These new tree designs have only just become possible due to a recent update to our graphics engine, which has allowed us the ability to use more detailed textures in all graphics modes, as well as the ability to build bigger and more exciting set pieces.

A good example of this is the new tents. In the past, we have had to build structures using kit pieces, but with the new engine features we can build entire structures as one piece of geometry and manually set where the player can and can't walk. So, expect to see bigger and better structures and scenery in the future!

Along with the new trees, we updated the terrain of the area, so new paths were created along with a host of new shrubs and ground scenery.

The colour scheme for the area was particularly important because we didn't want the camp to look like a circus, but still look like it blended into the environment. For this reason, we used mainly royal blues and reds for the main tents, and pastel reds and blues for the other tents. This gave the camp a regal look without it being overstated.

Hrm, I'm not sure if I like the idea or not. If there's one thing that really shows proper potential for meet-up areas for clans, it's Player Owned Houses, which would be infinitely cooler than a generic meet-up point.

I suppose it's fair to the f2pers, though, and it does make sense to have a common point for clan recruitment if there's going to be a proper standard clan system. Alright, fine, go ahead. :)

I'm excited for a graphical update for the trees though.

it is a nice way to cover up experimenting NPC animations and testing the new trees and other graphics, other than that it gets deserted in 2 weeks (at least at members)

Well -- maybe they could move "World 2 Fally" to this location -- at least THEN they might get some use out of it?

The only thing I can see resulting from it is that F2Pers might make some use of it.

Otherwise, it's just another obstacle between Fally and Port Sarim ...

Sounds like another MA to me, I'd rather have instanced clan meethouses than a giant recruiting ring; I'm not going to idle around shouting over others to recruit (Probably lower-end) members.

I was in a clan once when I was a newbie. Never again. This is just another useless update, did they even ask the community about this???

I entered the logo competition and didn't win, which is fine, and the winning logos looks great...except for one. One of the entries is a skull and crossed swords. Now there was already a skull logo and a crossed swords logo in the examples made by Jagex. It's a bit naff to pick a winner which is basically just a combination of two premade ones.

Whoa, give it a chance guys.

Can any upload one of the pictures with the new trees to imageshack? I can't get onto the useful parts of runescape .com (and therefore see images there) until friday.

I'd just really like to see the new trees. If all trees get properly updated, then...well...it might just make average locations look good again. Buildings can be as perfect as they like, but until trees are updated then runescape will always suck.

Why might the clan area not suck? Well, so long as it's small, it might work well if we can leave details with the scribe. You can do this on your homeworld, and obviously one world per clan (or two, one f2p and one p2p) where you can leave information about the clan. It sounds like an okay idea, but...well...not worth putting into the game, TBH.

Except the trees.

I'm not an efficienado.

My thoughts exactly. Is another big stupid deserted thing clogging up the world map REALLY what we need?

I like how the blog talks a bunch about the buildings, and the trees, and the making of this area, yet reveals absolutely nothing about the clan features it offers. At all.

Frankly, they made the main point of this DevBlog simply discussing possible graphical improvements, while casually mentioning some sort of odd clan area south of falador.

Buying spins make you a bad person...don't do it. It's like buying nukes for North Korea.

Well if it bothers you that the game is more fun now, then you can go cry in a corner. :shame:

They are purposely keeping the actual content secret. This years is the year of the clan, dont go expecting any new skills this year. I think Jagex are going to be releasing a lot of clan related content and quite rightly they dont want to give it all away in one blog.

New trees ftw

Nope, we don't need this kind of stuff. I HOPE the npcs and clan camp will be useful.

Because if there are npcs telling u "how to be a true Pk clan", ill rage.

One of the tents has 'XXX' written over the top, so obviously Jagex is secretly advertising pornography. How horrible.

And I thought this was a family game.

New trees ftw

They don't give anything away except for the fact that there IS a new clan area, trees are getting an update, and details on how they can make tents and other buildings look better. The latter two having nothing to do with clans.

Frankly, I think they should have made it a blog about the graphics of trees and tents and how they can make good buildings, with a casual mention of this big clan update. Because the only real information in there was about trees and tents anyways.

I'm wondering whether they started making this update the moment when they moved the air altar to varrock (So people won't have longer routes when runecrafting airs once this camp established there). If that is the case, then they have been working on this update for quite a long time.

EDIT: They would be working on it since at least 17 September 2009, because that's the date it got moved.
