Google forces Youtube accounts to be linked to Email

I just tried to pop into my Youtube account real fast to see if any of my subscriptions had updated, only to get a screen informing me that I can no longer use YouTube without linking it to my Google account "for security reasons".

Well, seems like a heavy-handed and desperate attempt to get new Google accounts, but fine, what's one more free account I need to keep track of? I figured I'd just use one of my stock throw-away username/password combos that I have for free accounts I don't plan to use and...

Wait, why do I have to verify my password through my phone? The hell? Why can't I use my Yahoo account? Are you serious? 1) I'm not giving Google my phone number; they're the spam-ad Goliaths of the modern age and I honestly don't trust them to not ad-blast my phone, 2) I pay for my texts and I'm not wasting my money to verify my account when I can do it for FREE through email, 3) I don't post my phone number anywhere online unless I absolutely have to, such as for online job applications or trusted sites like Amazon.

I think it's just dumb to force people to verify their account through their phone. I know a lot of people who have to either pay for their texts, don't know how to text or don't get texts at all on their phones. Where does this leave them if they want to watch YouTube? And why not give the option of verifying through email?

I guess I'll just go to DailyMotion until I get a reply from Google about whether or not I can verify through my Yahoo. That is, unless DM got bought out by someone like Ask.com or AOL and I have to create accounts with them too...

Umm, Google's pretty trustworthy. You shouldn't have to worry too much, although this is weird to confirm via text. If you can't trust Google, what site would you trust.

I used to get a message every time I log into my Youtube account to connect to my gmail account, but there was always an option to say no. I don't get the message anymore however.

ughh, i hate all those hyped people believing that Google is gonna get world dominance by selling all their info, honestly, why would they? It would ruin the business.

Just live with it or stop using the _free_ youtube service.

Do you have a hotmail account?

Because that seems to have worked for me.

Now I can log onto google using that hotmail for a username, with a different password.

I only had to click the link in the email I received for account activation, then closed it without adding any mobile phone numbers.

Upon clicking it again it said my email had been verified.

Some hacker probably tried to bruteforce your account, and locking your account is how Google tried to protect your personal information. I've been a Google user for at least 4 years; verifying an account by text message was originally how you got into the Gmail program. And why you're accuse them of forcing users to create new accounts, when they have a text method verification process in place to limit the number of new accounts?

They're always suggesting I link, but I've always been able to opt out. I'll continue doing so until they force me to do otherwise, at which point I'll stop using an account for youtube.

don't give your number. make a trash hotmail account and use it as the recovery email or w/e gmail asks for during sign up and you won't have to give up your phone #

doesn't matter if you "trust" a company, it's silly to think that the people who run the company at the moment is going to run it forever

Ahh yeah, that's why I didn't have to text confirm for one of my trash gmail account I made like last week.

That helps, thanks! And thanks also to Jaffy1 for the same suggestion. Gonna go do that now.

Exactly. Look at YouTube itself and Jagex... How about Marvel? Add to that Google has had problems keeping personal info secure in the fairly recent past, and it's not much of a leap of logic why I don't trust them. Besides, in these days of mass corporate buyouts and corruption, I trust very few institutions, and the ones I do trust are only trusted provisionally (i.e. I have to trust them to conduct my personal business, like amazon.com).

Call me paranoid, but just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean someone ISN'T out to get me...

I never get bored at laughing at the hysterics people get into when their oh so precious personal information is needed on the internet.

You all give your personal information out numerous times in real life, but as soon as it comes to something online the world is out to sell any information and do some sort of bad stuff to it. Internet paranoia is laughable. Honestly, all this suspicion has no base, it's as bad as my Grandmother not doing banking over the phone and only doing it in person because she thinks people will tap into the phone line. The paranoia is all in the head and is a joke.

Just give them your phone number, they won't do anything with it, and if they did, what's the worst that would happen?

Well ya should be using gmail anyways, best free e-mail service out there. My youtube/gmail is linked but I never had to text to get it set up, chances are likely that the example above occurred, someone tried to get into your youtube account. Just having anything related runescape seems to be a pass to have some weirdo out there trying to get access to your [cabbage].

Anytime. Did it work? :)

Yup, they forced me to link. RIP youtube account.

Ahh well....

Try linking the Google account to a trash mail account you have, then try the way described above?

The worst that could happen is they change hands and sell my number anyway, or it gets leaked somehow (either through a hack or stupidity) and I pay a ton in unsolicited emails and phone calls. Or, have to change my number and then update everyone who has my number, just so that I could watch some YouTube vids. Not. Worth. It.

You all give your personal information out numerous times in real life

No, I actually don't give out my personal info irl every day; more often than not I decline when asked, and pay cash whenever feasible. I'm not registered to vote, I don't sign up for rewards programs or store cards, I only have a bank debit card and a Greendot card for online shopping - I only ever give out personal info when I absolutely have to, and even then, grudgingly.

And no, creating a hotmail account didn't work; all it did was give me the option of verifying with a voice call instead of just text, which defeats the purpose of not giving them my number.

someone tried to get into your youtube account. Just having anything related runescape seems to be a pass to have some weirdo out there trying to get access to your [cabbage].

I won't say it's not likely someone tried to bruteforce access to my YouTube, but it's probably not RS related; I don't watch RS vids and have never made any so there's nothing linking my accounts. If anything, it was some butthurt troll that I flamed with logic that tried to get in and post his pr0n on my channel to get me in trouble. Or...YouTube is changing their service again. Regular 'Tubers know how often THAT'S happened the last few months. How many times have they changed the page layouts since August? 4? 5?

Oh gosh, the Youtube layout change was the only pointless aesthetic change I've ever been pissed about.

Pointless, yes, but it pales in comparison to what Kotaku did. Holy [cabbage] that was a terrible layout change.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

I verified it through my phone a while ago. Haven't had a single ad text or what have you. I feel a bit like you're blowing something small way out of preportion; that's just me though.

This is the internet, where heightened paranoia reigns supreme, where nobody can be trusted, where evil lurks on ever page, where every website is run by a suit caring for nothing but money.

This is Google, if they wanted all of your personal information they could get it so easily it is almost unimaginable. But oh no, now because they want your phone number they actually want to give away all your information?

they sell your number and you get spam on your phone

maybe that's not a big deal to you but that would make me change my number

I've had my Google account linked to my mobile for years and not got one spam text.

and I pay a ton in unsolicited emails and phone calls.

Most cell companies have ways to prevent abuse, however must phone plans for non smartphone cover 500+ texts and are based on minutes - not total calls.

To use 500 texts in 30 days? thats over 15 texts a day.

Or, have to change my number and then update everyone who has my number,

I get invited to a facebook group for a new number weekly because of people messing up phones and changing providers. Heck, Just do what a friend did, mass text everyone, it's not a hassle that would take 2-3 minutes. IF AND A BIG IF it ever happened.
