egyptqueen1
So i'm going to be getting a laptop soon, and then that sparks the debate between which one to get, mac or pc. Now i don't want a giant debate on how one is better than the other...please? Here's what i'll be using it for: Mainly things for college word document, spread sheets etc.But also for things not related to school.gaming (RS and WOL)photo editing I don't want something that would have to large or to small of a memory (something in between maybe) and i suppose a decent graphics card. Budget: 1500 max. (maybe even 1000 max). I'm hoping to get a small discount for being a college student soon.

And if you want to play PC games, the PC is better, since many games are released for the PC first.A Lenovo or an Acer would do. They usually have fairly decent memory and prossesor speed. dsavi
I think anyone who is considering this should know that "Mac" and "PC" are both essentially different names for the same thing. Apple is great at marketing, and have created both a lifestyle around, and new name for, their computers to set them apart as something different. Which, essentially, they are not; The biggest differences between Apple-branded computers and other computers is pretty much just that- They're Apple branded. On the inside, the hardware is pretty much identical. That said, Macs do look pretty good and I would consider getting one. There's a lot of hype surrounding them that I think more people should be aware of, however.

hounddog
I think the hype that is being referred to is that people say that the mac can't get viruss. which ain't true, they can get them.

It's amazing sometimes how deluded someone who likes (Or doesn't like) Macs can be sometimes. It is true however that at the moment, Macs are far less likely to get viruses. OldJoe
You can get a decent pc by building it yourself for 600$, prebuilt is a little bit more. Don't know what type of game "wol" is tho lol. obfuscator
I'd recommend getting a PC just because you'll save money. Macs have their strengths but no matter how you swing it you're paying a lot more for mac hardware then you are for PC when it's exactly the same thing. tripsis
@ the above comments: one advantage that Macs do have is that they come with incredible software. stevepole
It sounds like your going to be using the computer for basic tasks, Runescape or any Jagex game isn't that demanding and I'm not imagining you're going to be doing a ton of photo editing that is going to require a lot of memory process or a powerful graphics card so I would say all this comes down to is your person preference. I love my Mac, the operating system is very simple and easy to use. Any Mac you get is going to be able to do everything you want (even the Airs) which I find to be one of the greatest things about Apple computers is that you never truly have to worry about your system specs and if you're going to be to run a specific application or w/e. With windows operated computers you need a little more thought out idea of what you really want to do with the machine so you get the right computer that is able to fit you needs entirely. In the short term PCs are generally cheaper as you can get a fairly nice ones for under $1000 but in my experience I've seen more people happier with Macs over anything else in the long term. jasignhagj
Are you - A Hipster- Rich- A graphic artist who can't figure out how to run OSX on a PC If you answered yes to any of those questions, consider a mac. If not, a PC is a far better choice. That makes no sense. Macs use the same hardware, and take it from someone who's used a macbook from '07, they are still as slow as any 4 year old laptop, just you payed twice as much for it. Also, office for mac is horribly designed, and iwork or whatever it's called is comparable to MS works in it's awfulness. If RS is the most demanding thing you'll do, any $600 prebuilt or a $500 custom build would work, which comes to 650-750 with a nice HD monitor. For a mac, you're looking at a minimum of $1500. Guy
Some people above are talking about desktops, I believe OP is looking for a laptop. Thing is with any mac is that you will be overpaying for what is essentially the exact same hardware as any pc. If you're going to use any software that is only mac-available, then obviously get a mac. However most software is pc-targeted so overall you'd probably be better with a pc on those terms. If you're going on style, meh, not the best way to judge a computer but I guess it is important for a mid/low range laptop. People say macs look nice and I can see that, but some PC laptops also look nice. I would go with a pc for the multitude of software that there is as well as the fact that your wallet will not feel so light after buying. Guest Rob
In your situation, I'd go with a PC. You'll end up saving a lot of money, unless you need specific software that comes with a mac. I've heard of Mac operating systems being installed on dell/acer/other non-mac brands, but I don't know how much that costs.

Sbrideau
If it is for word documents and that kind of stuff, the college most likely uses Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007. It obviously is designed better on Windows. Like a lot of others have said, you'd be paying too much for the same hardware as any other Laptops than Mac for the same hardware. If you get a Virus on your Mac (which is still pretty rare), you don't really have any way of getting it off and might have to reformat if you can't find any other way. For a quality laptop, Asus is the brand to go, and will cost much less than the allocated budget.

Anyway, sorry for saying this but, unless you're a self absorbed kid sitting in Star Bucks all day long then you shouldn't get a Mac. For a 1000 bucks you can get a hell of a good PC.Lets not forget that Apple is so damn overpriced on everything they sell.

Mil
@OP:If you don't know the reasons of why people buy Mac's, and know very little about the operating system, just stick with what your used to and get a nice windows laptop. It pains me to see people these days get a Macbook and have no idea how to make good use of it, and ask the most stupid questions about how to do stuff on it. You should really only get a Mac if you have a strong reason to switch from Windows, and are educated in the fact that Mac OSX is different to Windows. The Observer
I'd suggest a PC laptop for the sake of simplicity and cost effectiveness. If you are willing to spend more then you could look into getting a MacBook.
egyptqueen1
ok :D thanks Looks like i'm probably going to get a pc laptop versus a mac (unless my brother decides to install windows on a mac in-case i get one.. *cough*) these have been really helpful i appreciate it
Guest Rob
You might want to consider a Linux OS, like Ubuntu, although windows might be better for you.
