Time for a new release of the: >>>Tip.It Times!<<<

I'd like to remind people of the rules pertaining to Times threads:

[hide=Read these rules before posting in this thread]

Rampant flame wars have taken control of virtually every week's times discussion topics. The following guidelines must be followed when posting on this topic. Posts that ignore these guidelines will be removed.

1. You are invited and welcome to express like or dislike on articles and a particular author's writing style. It is not acceptable, however, to flame or personally insult an author. Posts that aren't anything but an attack will be removed from the topic.

2. Spelling and grammar errors can be reported to Racheya by PMing her and they will be fixed promptly. It is not necessary to post them on the discussion topic.

3. Off topic posts that do not discuss the content of that week's articles will be removed. This is not the place to discuss the direction of the times, how much you love or hate the times, etc. Off topic posts will be removed.

By keeping within these guidelines, Times discussion topics will mean more for the Panel and Administration than just a place for flame wars. Flame wars do not provide any useful feedback to the Times, which is mainly what we're aiming for with these topics: feedback.

This policy is effective as of now, November 17, 2010. Any posts prior to the creation of this policy may or may not be removed according to the new guidelines.

When replying please make sure to clarify the article you are replying to! Thanks!

First article: A key point left out is that the smithing update DID have some adjectives attached to it when it was mentioned. No reasonable person could consider the Artisan workshop a revamp, but that's what it was called in development. I think that places the blame for hyping the update squarely on Jagex's shoulders- if something isn't going to be revolutionary, don't call it a revamp, or anything else that it isn't, especially if you're not giving further information about what it will actually entail.

Third article: Good thing not too many people care about/understand statistics, or gambling wouldn't exist :D

Ten Years

Accompanying Article by Logdotzip

Edited by Racheya

Wow what a journey you had... for one so young you are able to convey so well your memories and parallels between RS & Life. Felt for you when you mentioned both the passing of your father, and the betrayal of your trust by that low-life.

Gaming has been part of my life as well since I was young, now I am old... *Laughs* I still play. It was heartening to read as I have found that the game has taken a lot of flak recently, and it is too easy to be caught up in the negatives, when really at the base of it all... Its a game, a form of enjoyment, somewhere to escape & unwind, to be as you want it to be.

So thank you for taking the time to write and share with me, I wish you all the best in RS & Life.

Regards. G.

Ooooh, so many shiny articles! :D

So, let's do them one by one:

Smithing Revamp: I haven't personally tried it yet(and probably won't for a long time) but it seems like it offer some interesting training methods. From what I've heard, the update itself is actually decent - apart from the fact that it's in no way what was expected or needed. The FAQ looks more like an excuse tbh, but what I think I could read between the lines is that they don't want smithing to become another Prayer/Herblore. Face it, most of the suggestions included more powerful, untradeable armour and weapons. Smithing isn't quite a cheap skill(Unless you train it at the blast furnace) and obviously a real use to it would drive up prices a lot. Now, the artisans's workshop doesn't really help with that...but I think it's a try. But until smithing is actually revamped we'll have to wait quite a bit...more than a year at least.

The house always wins: I have heard the suggestion of incorporating such games into actualy Runescape code(to prevent scamming) and I though it was an interesting idea. Of course the thrill of not knowing if the host is going to cheat you will be gone...but the flower games and such have a lot of bad reputation as being scam-games and I think it's a bit sad that something which people apparently enjoy cannot fully be used because of that. I think that'd be quite a nice addition ;)

Logdotzip: A very interesting article, you have successfully shown why you love this game. Runescape is indeed an awesome game that offers thousands of possibilites to play(I personally would probably have quitted some time ago as I don't really can get fun out of skilling or combat - if it wasn't for Team Penguin. It's something I discovered that's a lot of fun to me, the community, the aspect of helping other players and the whole game mechanics of dealing with penguins - even if that doesn't really have to do so much anymore with what anyone would consider a "standard" runescape playstyle.) Even if we may disagree with certain updates, we have come to love this game for what it is, and I think the people at Jagex are trying their best to keep that and also offer new stuff at the same time - even though they fail sometimes ;)

Larry and the penguins: PENGUINS! :D

Nah, I really liked it although it was a bit too short for my taste but it certainly got me thinking about it. Without larry, what would we have done? No chance against the penguins...and everyone thinks he's crazy. Poor larry :(

First article: Not very popular update for good reason (lower xp/hr and higher gp/xp) but its a fun and interactive way to train smithing. I liked it and got 91->93 smithing along with a nice looking royal cannon to boot. Some might hate it but I thought it was a step in the right direction as skilling is generally associated with repetitive motion and is better performed by bots than humans.

Second article: Good bit of nostalgia. I remember the good old times when I thought my d baxe was the greatest thing in the world. Such innocence ;) alas, what has age done to me but made me into a painfully realistic skeptic.

Third article: Good for informing newer players. I can't believe how many people will play the dice/flower games even though the odds are so heavily against them though. Legit hosts net around 20m/day of hosting which is pretty significant considering pre-FT a good income for those players would be around 1m/hr (even for someone who's an avid solo td/dk/frost'er its still takes 5 hr a day at 4m/hr profit to match the dice games, not to mention dice games has significantly less risk involved for the host.)

Only skimmed through the third article so far. I felt it was a little slow in attempting to explain the statistical side of things.

EDIT - Read through the second article;

Ah, good old nostalgia. I completely agree - Playing RuneScape has actually taught me life lessons that I was going to be unlikely to learn had I not played RuneScape at all. Fast and accurate typing ability, word comprehension, 'trust', self reflection, etc.

I wouldn't say the time I was a noob were the golden years of RuneScape, but I would say it was *my* golden year of RuneScape.

I'll lurk this thread a little more later

'Lets start with the most common game - 60+ 2x. The probability that percentile dice will roll from 60 to 100 is the probability that the percentile dice will roll 60, plus the probability of 61, plus 62, ... plus 99, plus 100. That is to say, 1/100 + 1/100 + 1/100 + ... + 1/100 + 1/100. From math class, remember that you can factor out the 1/100, and get 1/100 * (1 + 1 + 1 ... + 1 + 1). The (1 + 1 + 1 ... + 1 + 1) is the same as (100 - 60 + 1), so the probability of rolling 60 to 100 is 41/100. Multiply this number by the payout, which is two times the bet, to get 82 / 100. Since for every bet made you have to pay the house, subtract out 100 / 100. The final result is -18/100, or -18%. That means that for every bet made, the host is expected to take 18% of it. '

why over complicate this and lengthen it out you could have written all this in less than two lines

Only read the "Ten Years" article; great nostalgic feeling. While I've only been playing on and off since 2004-ish (just after RS2 was released, anyway) I can still relate to most of the article.

Looking back and thinking "I remember when there was no wilderness ditch", or "To think, we used to stand around outside Falador east bank using chat effects to buy and sell items."

I remember the day farming came out there were hundreds of people at every patch... It made training the skill much more fun.

And while I've never fallen for a scam, I do remember being quite annoyed when I accidentally LOW-alched my dragon halberd and lost 200k from it. To think, now I pay 500k just so my gravestone looks a bit cooler; and I haven't even died in months (outside of the wilderness).

So, great nostalgic article; I love ones like that. :shades:

WHAT FAQ?

Oh, and I hate to do this, but I'm pretty sure the Larry/Penguin article made a mistake. Penguins speak whatever the common RS tongue is. Stll enjoyed the article overall though :D

I agree with the smithing article - it looks like a decent update and more interesting way to train smithing, although the cost is a bit steep from what I've seen. The problem is, smithing just isn't useful. As for it becoming another prayer/herblore, they could have it start at level 1 and increase with the levels. I'm certain with enough imagination you could come up with something tbh.

Let's go down the list:

Racheya's article- I personally semi-agreed with it. The smithing update was overhyped, and just like free trade/wildy, everyone assumed that it was going to revolutionize the game, turn pregnant women into virgins, and other highly unlikely/improbable mumbo jumbo. When the update came out, people blamed everyone but the rumor mill that got everyone's hopes up. Article wasn't an eye opener, and the lack of depth/length into the subject wasn't too appealing, but it does still get its point across. 7/10.

'Nostalgic article'- the article would've been better suited as a fantasy/if you were around back in the day kind of article. It shed depth into your own personal experience without actually talking about the game itself. 4 obamas out of 10.

'Gambling article'- the article reminded me of racheya's. Needed more depth, could've very well used a comparison to 'real life gambling', and as a 'public service announcement article', it delivered its message decently without being too 'preachy'. 8 puh-puh-puh poker faces out of 10.

Purposefully avoided making my article a "RS was this this and this back then, this happened then this did", because there are plenty of articles like that already, and I wanted to isolate mine somehow. though I appreciate any criticism.

I liked all the articles, though the Gambling one was a little too mathematical for me. It's been a while, hah

@Racheya: Nah, it's definitely Jagex's fault. They knew what the skill needed and they decided to do something completely different. They half-assed it. This is half an update. It's an update meant to compleent another update that doesn't exist.

@Logdotzip: Cool story bro.

@sees_all1: Good PSA, but what's with the long drawn-out explanation of the math? You have 41 winning rolls out of 100, so your odds of winning are 41%. I don't know what's up with this 1/100 + 1/100 + 1/100 nonsense.

@sees_all1: Good PSA, but what's with the long drawn-out explanation of the math? You have 41 winning rolls out of 100, so your odds of winning are 41%. I don't know what's up with this 1/100 + 1/100 + 1/100 nonsense.

The strategy for figuring that out applies to all types of games and all types of statistics, whether its 60x2 or a different game.

[hide=More complicated example using the same technique.]

Take for instance 7-hi-lo. The house rolls two six sided dice, and the result is the two dice added up. You have the option of betting the dice will roll lower than 7, 7, or higher than 7. The house pays 2:1 if you bet higher or lower, and pays 5:1 if you bet 7. What is your expected long run return?

This game isn't as simple as 60x2, but the strategy for computing it is the same. Say you bet lower than 7, how do you compute your long run return. When you roll two dice, there are 36 unique ways the dice can roll - the first dice could roll 1, the second could roll 1. The first could roll 1, the second could roll 2 and so on.

The result of the dice can be 2-12, so what's the probability the roll is lower than 7?

Its the same as saying the roll is either a 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. The probability of a 2 is 1 in 36, the same as saying you must roll a 1 and a 1. The probability of a 3 is 2 in 36, you can roll 1 and 2 or 2 and 1.

The probability of lower than 7 is P(2) + P(3) + P(4) + P(5) + P(6), or (1,1) + (1,2) + (2,1) + (3,1) + (2,2) + (1,3) + ... + (1,5) or 15 / 36. If the house pays 2:1, you'll win 30/36 of your money back, or you lose 1/6 of your money bet in the long run.

First Article: Our disapointment is the fault of Jagex. For the better part of last year we have been hearing that smithing will get an update. We were lead to believe that the update would give smithing a use and not merely be another method of training the skill. In the behind the scenes, Jagex even called artisan's workshop "the long awaited smithing update." We, frankely, were not waiting for this update.

Even setting aside the fact that artisan's workshop did not give what we wanted, artisan's workshop even fails as the new training method it was intended to be. From what I hear it can't compete with the speed of adamant platebody smithing nor the efficiency of superheating gold ore while smealting it at a furnace. It's good for new players that can't really afford to throw wealth into the training of smithing as the lowest level activities of artisan's workshop provide the materials for you.

Kinda off-topic, I just read that FAQ about the smithing update. Hopefully it means they ARE going to release something to make high level smithing better, they just wanted this supposedly better training method first. They might need to adjust exp rates since I heard addy plates with SC hammers is still better and cheaper. Although, this has the benefit, from what I've seen, of being way way less of a grind.

i first know is ms-dos, then win3.1, not sure what the specs that time.

around 2001, my father buy us a pc(iirc cpu is 133 or 266mhz) and my sister subscribe dial-up. and because of dam slow pc , my cousin can only recommand me to play RS. every in order to start the game, it need to DL quite some time(need to re DL everytime got updates until 100%, this show how much better than it is now, roughly 5% can login and play).

the first time i enter game is to press F1 to get better performance(reduce graphic quality and blank every 2 row).

because of slow pc and internet, i play very few, so i miss out all rares that i can get that time. i remember the highest skill is mining, which i tried very hard to lvl up mining to 40 in order to wield and use rune pickaxe. then later my old pc spoil and i get a new P4 1.6ghz with riva tnt64 graphic card.

but shortly after that RS2 become public, and i was shock to login and need to 'makeover' myself again and to see that i lost my items in classic because items cannot co-exist in both. that time there are many ppl wanted jagex to let them get back their items from RS2. so Jagex make a deal that it is 1 way shot for anyone who want it. that time i almost want, but thinking that RS2 is partial 3D is cool although. and that time i started to play few more hours per weeks.

since each time technology power is double, my pc that always low end, there is always lag. so it explain my total levels after 10 years.

it can still go on and on and on, but this should cover about the first 3 years of RS.
