Hotkeys.

Are hotkeys legal to use for tasks suck as dropping ores, or fish?

Not that I wish to do aforementioned tasks, just curious.

One button press = One action is the rule. So one button press would be to right click, then the a different button press to "click" drop. Having it do this all for you in one button press is against the rules and counts as macroing.

I think I remember a Guide on the RSOF itself for a mining guide, and it included dropkeys as a viable method, even condoning it.

Are these policies as of recent?

Mousekeys and especially Turbo-Keys has been brought up several times and Jagex Mod's seems to have different thoughts about mousekeys, most says that if it is set up to use one click per action, it is legal, but i have read about at least one JMOD mentioning that it's not legal.

TL;DR It is in the grey zone.

I've been using turbo keys with the same setup for over 4 hours at once, and 3 hours another time. There are so many human faults like pressing buttons at different times and missing buttons, so it is VERY unlikely you will get a warning. Never heard a case either, I use a legal set up, so i reckon it is okay. I'd go with it, but don't overuse it.

I just looked up turbokeys to see how it works, and I don't see how it could be illegal if mousekeys are legal. It's one button per action, just like mousekeys. You set one button to right click, one to move X pixels, and one to left click. Then you push them in rapid succession.

I think Jagex's stand is this

Using mousekeys program that's part of your operating system: Legal

Using a mousekey program that has to be downloaded from somewhere (i.e. Super Mousekeys for RS): Illegal

Their rational is that this 3rd party program is especially versatile (more so than regular mousekeys) and provides an unfair advantage over those that don't download it.

I mentioned Super Mousekeys for RS because months ago I read a RS forum thread where the original poster asked why this program is illegal while regular mousekeys are. This thread got JMod responses, my paraphrasing of why it's illegal is my closest memory to what their stated rational was.

Hotkeys are legal since they are part of the standard keyboard.

Really? Cause as I recall it was you who was the one cussing me at base. Also, re-read what you just said: one 15 second delay (which is an exaggeration to begin with) ruins floor times? You are beyond ridiculous.

Correct, I've seen that mentioned before might've even been in the rules. Mousekeys exist in all fairly recent Windows versions and are available in some other OS not sure how well they work outside of Windows though. Since it's built in for most players no unfair advantage.

Hi all,

I think some of the confusion over whether it's legal/illegal might arise from the fact that there's more than one program out there, doing things that are similar but not always identical.

I've spoken about these programs with Mod Mark L from our macro investigation team.

The basic point is that you're OK as long as you carry out one action on your input device for every action in-game.

"An action" in this context is basically one of two things:

* Moving the pointer

* Clicking on something

We don't really care/need to know what kind of input device you use. Could be a traditional mouse, a trackball, a touchpad, a graphics tablet, a touch screen... or your computer keyboard with MouseKeys enabled.

The key thing is that every time you want the on-screen pointer to move somewhere, you must make a movement on/with your input device that exactly corresponds with the on-screen movement. And every time you want to click on something on-screen, you must carry out a click using your device.

MouseKeys is the name for a Microsoft Windows utility that comes with Windows and is usually found in the Accessibility section.

It uses the 2, 4, 6 and 8 keys on the numeric keypad to move the mouse pointer, and the 5 key (IIRC) to click.

This is fine because it doesn't allow the cursor to jump to a pre-defined spot. So for example, if you want to move the cursor to a point above where it currently is, you need to hold the 'up' key (or press it repeatedly)until the cursor is where you want it.

Some other programs appear similar but they do allow the player to make one keypress that will 'jump' the cursor to a pre-defined spot and then click there. This isn't OK because it's getting multiple actions (move then click) out of one player input.

Mod Mark L: "If it allows a mouse movement and a click with a single key press, then it breaks the one input/one output guideline."

They're not even saying that absolute jumps aren't allowed- they're saying that you have to push one button to move, and then push another button to click. By that definition, turbokeys and similar programs are legal.

Then again, this is Jagex. Regardless of what Mark L says, who knows what the idiot who decides whether to ban you or not will think.

So it's basically in the Grey Zone, even after Jagex "addresses" it.

Great.
