Jagex to develop Transformers MMO for 2012.

This is probably in the wrong forum altogether (move it if it is) but I thought it was too funny not to post it somewhere. Yes, they are developing a Transformers mmo.

Games maker signs agreement with Hasbro for new online title out next year

The powerhouse Transformers IP will next year get a brand new MMO following an agreement between casual behemoth Jagex and rights holder Hasbro.

The game has been pencilled in for a 2012 release in Europe, North America, Latin America, New Zealand and Australia.

Transformers is one of the most iconic brands in the world and we are delighted to team up with Hasbro in order to bring our shared vision to reality, Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard stated.

There is a huge appetite for an online Transformers game and we will utilise every bit of our development and publishing expertise to deliver a dynamic and action-packed game that Transformers fans will find irresistible.

Hasbro's senior VP and GM of digital gaming and media Mark Blecher added: Hasbros decision to align with Jagex speaks to the quality of their award-winning development and publishing team that boasts an outstanding track record of delivering innovative and fun online games capable of reaching millions of gamers across the globe.

We are extremely excited to create a dream team that combines Transformers brand stewards with Jagex development experts to deliver an epic Transformers gaming experience to fans in 2012.

One year to develop a full MMO? I highly doubt it, even the best companies in the world with thousands working on a game could barely pull that off. I wouldn't expect anthing like it until 2013 at the earliest.

I'm not to good on what happens when a country acquires a new licence like this, does Hasbro give Jagex he funding for it? If so, it's great news for Jagex indeed. (Please for the love of god I hope nobody comments that they are selling out or something along those lines)

EDIT: What is with the sheer hate on Jagex here by the way? Hoping the game crashes and burns, thinking it will destroy RS? Where is the basis for these opinions?

I'm actually quite surprised an IP of this nature didn't go to EA or Activision for them to churn out some crappy, generic Game/MMO, with a £40 retail price plus £10 subscription.

So I guess Jagex will have to develop a whole new engine or borrow someone elses if it's going to be a normal game, as opposed to a browser game.

Oh well will have to see how MeganFoxScape turns out.

Perhaps they could use the failed "Mechscape" as a basic model?

I'm waiting for Das's reaction to this news. I don't think Jagex have ever created a game where they didn't have the full creative licence so it really is unknown waters for them and I don't think anybody can tell how it will turn out. I know I trust Jagex in getting a game out there than Activision for sure.

They are selling out, damnit!

What else are they doing? They're basically multilogging with a skiller on the side for some side money... Not fully paying attention to their main at a cost of raising the skiller.

Jagex are a games Development Studio. If they were to only develop Runescape, they would probably be called Runescape. To be a games Development Studio, they have to develop bigger and bolder games, no matter how much people dislike it. Stay with one game and they will not expand, not grow and will probably die, fast.

Jagex also Publish games so they're not just a Development studio :P.

It will be interesting to see what sort of MMO this is. I highly doubt it'll be an RPG. And again will be interesting to see if it's going to be a full retail product or a browser based game like RS is.

Which is why Funorb is such a success.

Oh wait..

Most Funorb memberships are for F2p-only mains to change their names. That's saying something.

It was scrapped due to it not being as good as they'd hope. Parts of it will be going towards Stellar Dawn, not sure exactly what but I imagine lots of art etc. mainly. It's a good thing they cancelled it rather than releasing a terrible game, it's great to see a company do that. (Not good that it wasn't a good game though).

Find me a games studio that hasn't had a flop in it's lifetime. Even then I wouldn't actually call it a flop, as it has had many games which were quite successful for a while.

Funorb = Flop = Pancake... Burnt pancake in the mud with a side of abandonment.

No one goes there anymore... And steller dawn will follow Funorb's life cycle, most likely.

Buying spins make you a bad person...don't do it. It's like buying nukes for North Korea.

Well if it bothers you that the game is more fun now, then you can go cry in a corner. :shame:

your article was the equivalent of a circumcized porcupine

The only thing wrong with it is the lack of a percentage for when you need to stroke it.

I'll hold my tongue until I see some results, but judging by the fact that Transformers is a kids TV show... well - that already speaks volume to me.

A "kids" TV show that's original fanbase are now in the prime 25-35 age band that spend the most money. Its an optimal group to market for. I think this game will be more than meets the eye and am looking forward to hearing more about it.

Just because you're interested in a kid's show doesn't mean the vast majority of the populous is.

Transformers is more popular then you realise. It is a huge license for Jagex to get.
