The sands in the hourglass trickled slowly away.

'You would have thought they would have kept the blue torus' Captain Volta mused to herself, waiting for the ancient laptop to load the planet charts.

There was that annoying ping, the one that tells you your computer has encountered an error and needs to close. Volta sighed gently, keying in her access code on her holster. 'Last time this peice of crap...' There was another ping, the holster had locked up. Volta took a deep breath 'Ok, its alright. I will just calmy and collectedly...' She hurled the laptop into the window, and it sailed through, out into the cold vaccum of space. The forceshield was supposed to turn blue when something struck it. 'Oh Sh-' There was another ping and the room vented into space.

Volta awoke with a start, looking around for Tyran, he would make her feel better. She saw him, sitting at the end of the bed, gazing at her. She grabbed him and squeezed him tight, burying her head in his furry chest. 'I had such a horrid dream, Microsoft was still at large, and...well just everything was going wrong.' She drew her head back and looked into Tyran's gazing eyes, smiled gently and put him back down, next to the others and got changed.

 

After a light breakfast, a short workout and shower, she reviewed the duty roster while she dressed. This was her first colony drop, and with any luck the beginning of a prosperous trade agreement with the colony she helped birth...but for now she was just the Captain of the Sarlane, a Titan Class Transporter, seconded from the merchant fleet at the behest of Council Adjunct Wheatly, an Andian. Like all Andians he was thin, scaly and arrogant as hell...He even introduced himself as 'The man who killed your father', but she smiled it out, like she did with all the alien types...probably why he chose her for this mission...All the other captains would make some comment or another...Terrans were as arrogant as Andians...Sometimes she thought without the British the First Contact War would only have ended with the destruction of Europa, Io and the Emperor. Humanity had snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat, but every Terran saw it as a victory.

She looked up and saw that she had gone down three decks and was somewhere near engineering 'Ruddy Internal Narrative,' she said under her breath 'AI, teleport me to my chair.' The world turned black and her skin tingled as her atoms were smashed across space into her chair. She opened her eyes, ordered a latte and stared out at the azure seas of Europa, displayed on the view screen.

'So you finally arrive Human.' That was Wheatly.

'Sorry Adjunct, are we fully loaded yet?' The viewscreen resolved to show the cold metal of Station Seven. Like all Human Stations it was bristling with sensor grids, shield generators and turbo turrets.

'Your race continues to lower my expectations...There have been five incidents this morning alone.' He handed her a clipboard, the little scraps of paper had Andian Script all over them. Internally she sighed, externally she smiles glibly.

'Terrans never were ones for order.'

She felt the eyes of several crewmen staring icily into her back, and could hear Mein Imperator chastising her later 'We can't show weakeness in front of the aliens. You are an example of everything that is wrong with the British Subspecies!' She didn't really care, she had a ten year contract and her father was her immediate superiour, so nothing ever got done about it.

Wheatly did a weird clicking thing that she approximated as a 'Hmmmm' and then went back to standing over one of the helmsmen. She silently noted that it was the same helmsmen as the past three weeks...ever since they had left Grissom...his previous stationing, overseeing the Human Colony there. She shook her head, it didn't do to get involved. Either he would say no, and the helmsmen would spend a month in the infirmary, or he would say yes...and spend two months in the infirmary.

She glanced down at the incident reports and noticed that the entire Colonial Command Team (you guys) had been detained on charges of travelling with a Psion. The Psion, of course, claimed to be registered, but the Terrans couldn't find any record of it...Didn't mean he wasn't, it meant they wanted to waste his time. The Command Team had objected and a scuffle had ensued.

She stood up, flexed lightly and set off for the brig.

Welcome to the 23nd Century, 2242, January.

As many of you know Space is a game set in Space, you take on the persona of a person, alien or machine and pretty much do whatever you like.

Curio: Be you Research AI, or Alien Race X, this is the class where you get to be 'non-Human'. You can design your own bonuses, GM approval pending.

Speciality:

Tactical: You are capable of using any sort of weapon, flying any sort of craft, and generally ordering people about. (Take any 10 levels of Talents, related to Tactical)

Medical: While everyone can wrap a bandage, only you can perform surgery. (Take any 10 levels of Talents, related to Medical)

Engineer: You know ship systems, lock tumblers and keypads like the back of your hand (Take any 10 levels of Talents, related to Engineering)

None: You are a jack of all traits. (Take 7 Levels of Talents, related to anything)

 

Talents:

Talents, are the new skills.

Level 1 Talents cost 500 Merits and make you slightly better at something. Gives +10 Modifer.

Level 2 Talents cost 1,000 Merits and make you slightly better...again. Gives +20 Modifier.

Level 3 Talents cost 2,000 Merits. +30 Modifer

Level 4, 4,000 Merits, +40

Ect.

 

If I remember, or if you say 'Level 5 Repair Expert'. I will roll a d100 and if your score, plus or minus any modifers, is more than or equal to the number I roll, then you get a favourable result. If your score is 10 higher then you get an even more favourable result, if you score 20 higher then it is even more favourable...ect...ect...

IE. Sam, a level 5 repair expert, tries to reattach a screw, this is ridiculously easy, so a modifer of +90, giving an overal score of 140.

I roll a 39.

As such Sam succeeds and does it super fast.

 

If Sam then tried to fix a nanite, with only a cracked pair of nanogoogles, then the modifer would be -50. Giving a score of 0.

I roll 70.

As such Sam fails, and destroys the nanite in the process.

 

If Sam then tried to reprogram the VCR to record Astronuts, then the modifer would be +20, since it is a fairly routine task. So a score of 20.

I roll a 23.

As such Sam fails to reprogram the VCR, but knows he fails.

 

Sam tries again, with a +20 Modifier, and a +5 Modifier since he has tried before. So a score of 25.

I roll 94

As such Sam wipes the memory of the VCR, but thinks the VCR is programmed.

 

Sam, being a clever sort, checks to see if he has reprogrammed it correctly. This is +20, as normal, but now carries a -69 Modifier, the difference between his last score and the last roll.

Since the score is less than zero I don't need to roll.

As such Sam believes he has correctly programmed the VCR.

 

Sam, being extra clever, makes some toast (Nominally I wouldn't roll since it is ridiculously easy), and then comes back to check the VCR again.

Since I have forgotten the exact modifer I reset it to +20.

I roll 75.

As such Sam still believes he has correctly programmed the VCR.

 

 

 

Talents do not apply in all circumstances.

If you are trying to do something complicated, difficult or fiddly, then they probably will.

If you ask me to, then they do.

If the feeling grabs me, then they do.

 

Things like buttering toast, screwing in a screw, firing a gun, walking, breathing...All the general things do not require talents, but can be boosted, or screwed up by talents.

 

 

With Talents you can be vague, like 'Electronics' or precise like 'Circuit Boards'.

Vague terms may mean I do not count your talent as relative...say First Aid does not include Surgery...in some situations, but do in others. This is related to how difficult I feel.

 

Technology

Research, puzzles...that general bag.

 

Research is broken down into three groups:

Light

Medium

Heavy

 

Light research puzzle cards are worth between 1 and 3 Research points.

Medium research puzzle cards are worth between 3 and 6 Research points.

Heavy research puzzle cards are worth between 6 and 12 Research points.

 

You may pick any ONE group and research from that group ONLY.

 

Whoever solves all the puzzles on a card gets all the points, even if someone else solved half of them...or whatever.

 

Research points can be spent any way you like, and the technology is limited to you alone. However the information must be stored somewhere, and you cannot, even if you are an AI, memorise it all.

If you computer is blown up, or you lose your memory stick, then you lose all your research.

Saving it in two dozen places means you need to back it up each time you make an advance...And 'Update everything' comments will annoy me.

Research entered into the crew's database is accessible to everyone(players), but cannot be lost.

 

Notes:

This is a roleplaying game. Making notes of names, places, codes or other stuff may be useful. Even if it is not, then you may wish to doodle a picture of yourself in the space provided.

You can also keep track of your Technobabbles here.

Each player has 3 Technobabbles, which replenish each session.

You can use Technoabbles on anything, even if it is not technical in any way.

As long as something is theoretically possible, ie a modifier of -99, then a technobabble will let you do it.

If you Technobabble something with a modifer of -100 or less, then you fail, and the technobabble is used up.

 

You can also permenantly remove a TB, in exchange for giving yourself a +1,000 Modifer for five minutes(real time) on one particular area. EG, Surgery.

This will make almost anything possible in that area, but you will permenatly remove the TB and if you are knocked out for 4:59 minutes of that period, then you have wasted it.

For reference, attempting to travel through time, attempting to gain extra TBs, attempting to build an atomic bomb from a paper cup, all count as things that are impossible, and so TBs, of either kind, won't help you.

Backstory:

Albert grew up through the First Contact War, which made his childhood tough, but through this hardship he found a love of exploring. His family were poor, because his father was out fighting and his mother had to look after Albert's baby brother, Frank. Thankfully, Albert's older brother Jack was just out of the age range for conscription and was able to support the family through jobs in factories. Thus Albert had to find his own entertainment, exploring the nearby countryside of the small Terran town he lived in. He found the idea of finding new and unexplored areas interesting, and especially loved the idea of a secret base which no one would find out about appealing, which for him at his young age of around 13, was a small cave near a small waterfall which masked it's entrance. Albert's mother worried about his attitude towards his hobbies rather than school, and for the next 7 years, until he was 20, Albert was in a strict boarding school. There Albert grew in his interest of robots, and took an engineering course after passed the school with just slightly higher than normal grades. Happily his father returned from the war during the time Albert was in school, and thus the finance for University came easily, and Albert was able to take his doctorate in engineering, specialising in roboticts. At the age of around 25, Albert finally finished all his educational courses, and the war was thankfully over by then. Within the year, Albert was able to find a placement on a space shuttle, and recieved his grant to set up a colony for the Terran's, although the Terran's xenophobic attitude has worried him; is he really serving the people he wants?

The prospect of not being able to fail makes me feel more easy, but it'd be a hassle to cost that much resource for something that could be prevented. So I try hard to avoid the ship, but the captain is obviously corrupt and unfit for duty.

I am glad that you are taking a more structured approach, since while the freeform element was fun, it did lead to a lot of problems.

 

As a question of balance, are you trying to make research less essential to the process this time? In the previous game, you basically could not do anything without research, and those of us who were terrible at puzzles ended up having to completely rely on the ones who were good at them, which didn't always work out. A method to obtain research points at a slower rate without doing puzzles, for example, or more tech being available to purchase/salvage/"liberate"?

 

Aside from that minor gripe, it should be just as fun as last time, and I will have my character to you by sometime tommorow.

My inital plan was to have alot of research steal missions, but it never really developed(People want to use their handcrafted Blitz Cannon more than the GM created Jelly Gun).

Recommend a diet for the fifth. Ask what the first is doing here.
