Mining Coal Effiency

Recommended Posts

I have been inactive for 3 years so some of these questions may seem naive. I've been out of the loop. I also gave all my items away when I left so I have low working capital.

My goal is to mine 17000 coal for a specific smithing goal, whilst also raising my mining lvl (currently 76).

I use a coal bag and mining urns at the lvl 15 dung dwarf mine, with Varrock armour 1+Glory+Wealth+Rune Pick. I believe this to be a very efficient and short coal route to deposit box.

I have made 300 mining urns so my xp is multiplied by 1.2x so far.

The Volatile clay tool is a 2.2x mining multiplier but only when it is a pickaxe. I assume it will not last as a pickaxe for long enough to be useful for 17k coal so unless anybody can tell me how much xp/time it can be a pickaxe for that would be appreciated.

The sacred clay tool is a 2.0x mining multiplier and has a certain limit on use. What is this limit? Is it a certain number of xp?

The Penance horn is a 2.0x mining multiplier. how much xp/time does this last for?

The Master Penance horn is a 2.0x multiplier, how much xp/time does it last for? Timewise, it is efficient to spend more time in the BA minigame to upgrade to Masters or does upgrading take longer than the extra multiplier time I would gain.

Also how does a penance horn work? Must it be equipped? Which slot does it take if so?

Another question about the multipliers, can they stack up. E.g. If i used a sacred clay tool with a penance horn (+urns) is that a (2.0x2.0x1.2) 4.8x xp multiplier bonus?

In order to work out whether I should try to gain more multipliers by acquiring A volatile/sacred clay tool and/or the (Master?) Penance Horn, I would need to work out the rough time it would take to gain any of these items.

What is the approximate time taken and cost to gain: A sacred clay tool, a Penance horn/Master Penance Horn?

Barrage of questions!

Thanks.

I would suggest to completely forget the idea of mining coal.

Mining iron or granite is better for experience (at least until 80 mining) and there are myriad other ways to get the money to buy your smithing.

I have given it some thought and I will come back with a report of:

Iron Mining Efficiency: Profit Per Hour and Xp per hour

Coal Mining Efficiency: Profit per Hour and Xp per hour

My Maximum Reliable Cashflow Effiency: Profit per hour (+alt xp per hour)

From this I can work out whether it is more effective to make large profit first, then buy coal and mine iron for xp or whether mining coal gives the faster gp and xp profit.

I currently believe my max cashflow per hour to be low because of the low prices of Nature runes and Chinchompas. They were about 300gp and 850gp respecitvely when I left and I could make approx 600k per hour (I seem to remember) but prices are practically halved so only 300k per hour :/.

Mining coal at that area is not very efficient. The best way for you to do it would probably be mine granite for one level at least, and then switch to the concentrated coal deposits in LRC. I know from 77-80 it is roughly 15k coal, and it is much faster to mine coal that way.

Also, chinchompas and Natures are not really that fast anymore. If you have a higher hunter level, I would suggest Grenwalls. Using a fruit bat, they can hit around 800k per hour iirc. However, green dragons can easily top 1m per hour at mid 80s melee stats with a tortoise.

The master penance horn is definitely worth it to get for mining. However, sacred clay is not. The volatile tools do not stay a pick for any decent length of time, and the morphic tools run out of charge very quickly. Also, the bonuses do not stack like that. The sc pick and master horn combined only yield a 3x bonus. The Urns are a set amount of xp when you teleport them away. So they are not calculated as a % bonus like the Master horn and Sc tools are.

Hi,

Your haven't posted other levels/info, so some of this info may not necessarily apply to you.

First of all, location. You stated that you're currently level 76 mining. Once you reach 77, mining coal at the living rock caverns is almost certainly a faster option. If you end up following previous posters' advice regarding using other methods for moneymaking, then you should switch to mining concentrated gold in the LRC when you reach level 80.

Regarding pickaxes: sacred clay pickaxes are only worthwhile at very low mining levels due to the low baseline experience per hour rates at those levels. At your current level, playing stealing creation to get sacred clay pickaxes will take longer than getting the same amount of experience by just mining. However, at your discretion, if you really detest mining but like stealing creation you could consider it worthwhile. My recommendation is to use a dragon pickaxe if at all possible, and rune otherwise. Bear in mind that if you can free up the cash for a dragon pickaxe even temporarily, then sell it back later, you'll save a fair bit of time.

Regarding penance horns: the difference between regular and master horns is purely cosmetic in terms of mining bonuses. However, getting a master penance horn is a side effect of levelling up the various roles in BA. If your goal is to get a set mining level, say 80, then you will reach that goal faster by skipping the levelling process. However, if you expect to use the penance horn repeatedly in the long term for many levels of mining, agility, etc, then it is definitely worthwhile to spend points to level your BA roles. By having higher levels, you will both find BA easier and find it much easier/faster to get onto good teams. The ability to get onto good BA teams can easily cut horn-charging times in half, as well as save a great deal of frustration. Using a penance horn is more efficient than not for mining, unless you are always stuck on exceptionally poor teams. Depending on BA speed, which depends a great deal on teams, charging a penance horn could be considered as 60k to 120k mining experience per hour; see below for charge times.

Multipliers stack additively. So a 2.0x multiplier from a sacred clay tool (+100% base), a 2.0x multiplier from a penance horn (+100% base), and a 1.2x multiplier from urns (+20% base) will combine to result in 3.2x the original mining experience (100% base from original + 220% base from bonus). On average, it takes 12-15 minutes to get a sacred clay pickaxe, and 5-10 hours to fully charge a penance horn (which then last for around 1.2 million mining experience, half of which is bonus). In both cases, finding good teammates makes a great deal of difference in the time taken to achieve your goal - this is more pronounced with penance horns. A penance horn typically takes 10-12 full 10-wave rounds to charge from empty to full. To gain bonus experience from it, a penance horn is equipped in the shield slot. It does not need to be wielded or kept in inventory while charging.

Another substantial mining bonus you haven't mentioned comes from summoning. The lava titan at level 83 gives a whopping +10 mining levels as an invisible boost. This will significantly increase mining speeds. There are several other lower-level familiars if you can't use a lava titan, but a desert wyrm probably isn't worth the bother.

Finally, if you have the levels for it, juju mining potions are very, very worthwhile to collect. You need level 80+ hunter and construction along with mid-range levels in herblore and farming to be able to get these. If you have the levels, or are close, you should get them, but don't worry too much if you're far away from those reqs. Juju mining potions have a five minute period of effect per dose consumed, and during that period they can sometimes activate a special effect that automatically banks mined ore for the next 30 seconds or something. They activate fairly frequently, and provide a hefty boost to both experience and banked ore.

When I mine, I use a dragon pickaxe, varrock armour, penance horn, lava titan, and juju mining potions to mine concentrated gold ore in the LRC. I bank my ores when my inventory fills. Using this method, I get 130k experience per hour (which would be 65k / hour without a penance horn), and it's fairly AFK-able. I've been told that by using urns and dropping the ore instead of banking it, 160k/hour is possible.

Hope this helps :).

As far as bonuses go, they stack additively, not multiplicatively.

So using the SC tool and a Penance horn at once gives x3.0 xp, not x4.0.

The urns are calculated as a %. They fill up at a rate of 20% of the xp gained from mining. Similarly to sc pick + horn, the bonus is only given to the base xp gain. So urn + horn would get you 220% xp, or 110 xp for each coal rock.

Quick Question: What exactly are the urns and how would i go about acquiring them?

Also I would suggest not mining the coal in the LRC since the experience tends to be slower than granite or even powermining iron. However when you reach level 80, concentrated gold is great experience.

You may also want to look into Juju Mining Potions. I don't know exactly how they work, but generally, you "find" a stone spirit, and it banks the next couple of ores you mine. These can be obtained from Herblore Habitat.

As far as Penance Horn charging, absolutely worth it. If you can find a decent BA team that is solely for charing horns, you can get a full charge in about 4 hours, which is enough to last you for 8 hours of mining (gold at least, not sure about coal, probably longer). Note, this is for a Master Horn.

Personally, I've been mining Concentrated gold lately (for xp), and have been getting XP rates of about 170k per hour. This is with: 86 Mining, Dragon Pickaxe, Varrock Armor 4, Penance Horn, Lava Titan, and Juju Mining Potions, with dropping all ore (except banked by Juju). In the end, I still get ore from the Juju Potion banking, so it is not completely unprofitable.

I realise you are not high enough level for Concentrated Gold yet, but as others have suggested, I would get 77, do this method with coal, and then switch to gold. If you want to use coal for your smithing goal, I would suggest mining gold with this method, selling, and buying coal with the cash.

Note: This is more for the XP-based gains, but I suppose it is still adequately fast if you want to bank the ores aswell.
