My laptop is unable to update my iPod Touch

As the title says, my laptop cannot update my third generation iPod Touch. Whenever I press update or restore in iTunes, all it does is make my iPod show the connect to iTunes screen. Then when I plug my iPod in after that, I can her that it is connected, but it isn't showing anything in iTunes or in Device Manager.

If I want to update my iPod I must use another computer.

My laptop is running Windows XP SP3.

My iPod is jailbroken if that helps but it should affect it.

Thanks T&C.

If it's jailbroken and you update the software on it, it'll remove everything on the iPod including the jailbroken part of it. It's not really highly necessary to update if you've jailbroken it because the features you want are within the jailbroken part.

That is true, but I was just updating as I have been told that the newest one runs a lot faster, and I was getting annoyed at 4.3.1.

I think there might be an issue with my USB drivers or something. Could somebody help me please?

If the specific software runs faster, it will have little to no affect if it's jailbroken because often the jailbroken component will slow it down.

(Sources: I have my own jailbroken iTouch.)

You should test other things with your USB drives to check to see if that's the case. eg. A flash drive, a phone charger - anything that uses USB. Although I doubt that's the case because you are able to sync it.

My best guess would be something to do with the fact that it is jailbroken. But just try another computer first and see if that's the case, then sync your files on your laptop.

I can run everything fine - external hard drive, flash drives, camera, even my 5th gen iPod Nano. Jailbreaking is not the problem. Even when I have restored it to a new install I cannot restore it again at all. I am using another computer to restore/upgrade it.

I've reinstalled iTunes and I still have the same problem.

If you haven't already, try using different USB ports. Use the ones on the front and the back.

That is true, you should not have done that or you would have to do the jailbreak process again. Also to mind that you have to install the things you had before they were erased.
