Return of the wildy/free trade-do you regret your vote?

Now that it has been more than 4 months since the return of the wilderness and free trade, and the game (and its players) has had ample time to adapt to the change, I decided its time to make a thread asking how people are feeling now compared to about five months ago.

Feel free to post whatever you like, what your vote was, whether or not you regret it based on what came with free trade, jagex (in)sincerity in the reasoning behind the update, etc.

My two cents:

I was in the minority of players who voted against the return of free trade and the wilderness. I am not, and have never been, a pker, and thus the wilderness aspect didn't really come into play for me (I didn't care one way or the other). But free trade, I was convinced, would be a terrible change for this game. Unfortunately, I believe I was spot on.

In many ways, I am better off now than before free trade. I have amassed a small fortune staking (although I have had my fair share of losses), I have benefited from the relaxed prices on the grand exchange in that I have been able to purchase skilling items much more easily, and I now have the ability to help out friends with gp/item lends if they need them.

But I wish it was never changed. Gp now has an attached monetary value, and thus greed (which was always present even when real world trading was not rampant) has gone through the roof. Scamming and hacking are now much more common, and new and creative ways to trick naive players out of their cash have arisen, such as dicing and flower games. And obviously, botting is out of control. Whatever it was pre-trade limit in 2007, it is 100x worse. It is actually affecting the vast majority of players ability to play and enjoy the game. How many training spots have you tried, only to find them filled with bots?

I am extremely disappointed in jagex's decision making over these last few months. As many have pointed out, they have been profit driven and have been spoiling the game to achieve financial success. Their assurance of "state of the art" bot detection programs was a complete joke. Maybe they would have been perfect for stopping 07 bots, but guess what, bot programmers improved too, and evidently even more than the bot detection systems did.

That said, I nonetheless decided to return to the game after a 2 month hiatus between mid february to mid april. After thinking it through, I decided to stick with the game through thick and thin. I enjoy it too much, and have invested considerable time into it, and bad decisions made by the company now running it does not offset the great game and community they have created for me to enjoy. However, botting (particularly for the purpose of rwting) needs to be dealt with swiftly, universally, and permanently, else I do not think I, or anyone else, will be able to continue to play.

I do not at all regret my vote, and I highly doubt anyone else who voted no does. I doubt the same can be said for the other 91% of you.

Please note: I don't really care if you disagree with my opinion, and I don't want you to counter my argument. Firstly, because I am right and I told you so...just kidding (or am I?), but please don't turn this into a flame filled post full of disagreement. Just post your own point of view and personal reflection on the issue.

I voted yes and I don't regret it at all, this game needs a real economy with money able to flow freely not some limited forced economy with junk trades and ge buyouts. And real wildy is much better for the game than the bh statues cash farm, even non pkers should see this. If it comes at the cost of more bots and rwt I really don't care, 13 year old kids getting their mum to buy them gold from the internet isn't affecting how I play the game

I voted for it to come back and I don't regret it. Infact, I'm happy about it still. I enjoy staking, and now that I can stake high amounts, I've made a lot of money. More than I've ever had before actually. Sure there's bots and what not to deal with out there, but it's not like they were ever completely gone before.

99 HP, Attack, Strength, Defence, Summoning, Ranged, Herblore, Prayer, Agility, Magic, Slayer, Fletching, Fishing, Woodcutting, Mining, and Thieving.

Jagex'd out of my untrimmed hp cape on 6/14/2011.

No. Also these bot/gold farmer threads are getting on my nerves. How many topics are needed to discuss this? I thought we were going to have a sticky

I don't get why you're such a bot sympathizer. People are discussing bots because they are a major issue right now, ruining the game for many people.

Honestly I care most about korasi 1 itemers, looters and dicers than I do about any actual rule breakers, bots never interfere in what I'm doing and mostly just make the price of things go down for me.

Check it out, huge amount of effort has gone into this massive mod!

I voted that I didn't care and guess what: I still don't.

From my experience my feeling at the time that A LOT of the yes voters were doing so blindly and not considering the fully picture seems valid.

From all the debate etc. it seemed the no voters (aside from those who jsut voted no as they hate pking) had well thought through ALL the implications and reasoned their vote. I even know some pkers who voted no as they could see the negative elements.

Where as a lot of yes voters seemed utterly blinded (as jagex wanted no doubt) by the "proper" pking and free trade and didn't pay a moments thought to all the pking styles they ranted endlessly about, or the fact half of them whined their asses off about "old school" pking and wanted it changed or the fact that it would obviously have major implications in terms of spam bots, general cheaters/scammers and bots. Not saying all of them were, but a good chunk definitely hadn't fully thought it through and utterly ignored the idea that this change could have any negative impact.

I voted against because of what is happening atm. Tnx to all who voted yes =D>

The poll was a promotional stunt. Jagex already intended to remove trade limits because they can better handle the legal issues with stolen credit cards being used to run gold farming operations.

What exactly is happening that is so terrible?

Gold farmer spam? - Not too different from Merch clan spam

Bots? - What else is new? people seem to forget how many were in restricted trade

Pking/Staking/gift-giving/W2/no more price manipulation - Sounds like an improvement to me compared to the days of restricted trade

I miss anything?

I dont pk, stake, give gifts, there is still price manipulation and trading on w2 is alot like spamming, thats why I like the ge.

This, so very much.

People botted in " ye ancient tymes " too, although I don't recall selling gold as an issue for many games in the dark ages. The merch clan spam was just as annoying as gold sellers, dice games, flower games, money double scams are today; just as annoying as people spamming random letters and junk messages in the dark ages trade hubs. Fally bank and park, or Varrock castle garden anyone? :shame:

Granted there are more of some of these today, specifically the bots (or are they just more visible?), but what can you expect? More people playing, more people with the time and skills to write the bots, or pay for them, and of course the laziness, lack of time, or whatever reason they have for botting. I'm hardly surprised this "happened" as so many people put it.

As for the topic, I would have voted yes if I had returned in time to vote, as I see the trade limit and what not as a band-aid fix for their legal troubles, and not a real solution. Think of the " barb wire eye wash " in post 9/11 America. Looks real nice, but is it helping things? Really? (at least they did get around the credit card legal issues in the end)

I would still vote yes today, too. ;)

I voted against it, so no. I knew exactly what would happen.

This.

It doesn't actually matter though. The whole voting thing was nothing but a charade. Jagex had planned to return it long before that, since it took them mere weeks to actually do it (and it takes a lot more time than that).

Personally I hate the wilderness with pkers. I don't pk and don't want others to try and kill me. They never actually succeed (so far), but I despise the fact that I have to "flee" people when going about my business.

" ye ancient tymes "

You just raped OE.

I voted no.

First: because I don't pk and don't wanna get killed by greedy persons when I'm runecrafting or digging clues.

Second: because I don't like bots at all. I report dozens of them every day I play (and see the same botters every day, without them being removed from the game).

And no matter what people say, I've been playing RS for like 8 years now and the bot problem was alot smaller when free trade got removed. People then botted XP wise to gain skillcapes they don't deserve, but nothing actually influenced the RS economy that much as it does today.

People who say the bot problem was always there are either drunk or stoned or ignorant or lying. No offence, but it's nearly impossible now to do a slayer task on lucrative monsters unless you visit Kuradal, but only high players have that luck. I feel sorry for the newcomers trying to level their skills/cb nowadays.

Third: Also because hacking and luring are common like never before. First I got lured into wildy and got my red h'ween mask ripped and then 6 weeks ago, I got hacked by a friend losing over 500mil in cash and items.

Three years of online chatting, duo skilling and messing around and the guy suddenly sent me a hidden keylogger via MSN & hacked me overnight.

Thx alot Jagex! Luckily I'm not the begging/complaining type of guy. I just restarted playing like a madman and have gotten 20% of my original wealth back in two months.

Anyway I don't know why people say "My one vote wouldn't have changed a thing against all the 'yes'-voters"

Omg, then please never participate in elections in real life either. *ignorance is a bless*

2016 goals: all skills +30mil xp - Completed this goal 11th December 2016 smile.gif
2017 goals: get at least 3 more master capes (start xp: invention done@21st Jan, mining done@2nd April & ranged 76/104mil done@June 20th) & all skills +40mil xp (done 24th August)

tl;dr botting and spamming is worse now then before however it doesnt justify the affects of restricted trade. Care to argue this?

Effects.

Eh, having ignored most of the bot threads/rants and whatnot, why would the idiotic amount of botting and spamming not justify the effects of restricted trade?

Also, why can't we have worlds with the "old new wilderness" in it? I don't like pkers. <_<
