Level 99 Construction Rareness Not a Reflection of Difficulty?

I recently achieved 99 construction and the first thing I did was look on the highscores to see what my rank was and to congratulate the next person who got 99 after me. Then I looked around to see just how rare my skill cape really is. To my surprise 99 construction is the second rarest skill cape in game, just after runecrafting. This was surprising to me because level 70-99 only cost me about 80mil, whereas for a skill like crafting (ranked 7th rarest) 70-99 would cost 100mil (making blue d-hide bodies). And although construction has little benefit after level 75, neither does crafting.

Looking through the list of 99 skills there are other interesting things- slayer, a skill I would consider very hard is ranked 8th, making crafting, smithing, and construction all rarer.

Does anyone else think the ranking of some skills on the list doesnt reflect there difficulty/cost/usefulness? If so, which skills and why, and if not, why does a skill like construction have spot #2?

Construction is rare for many of the reasons you stated. People do not believe that it is useful past level 75 and view it as a money sink. Construction capes are very much considered one of the things that people with plenty of money to spare get. I would argue however that construction and crafting are both useful for effigies and past level 97 it is surely very easy to get some free experience everyday with assists.

Of course it doesn't represent the actual difficulty of a skill. It represents how many players are willing to spend their money on a skill that is essentially pointless to level all the way to 99. It actually might actually represent a combination of that and how many people are willing to grind a skill. Construction is much more annoying to train than crafting/smithing. Firemaking and thieving are both as useless as fletching and cooking but they both involve massive amounts of clicking to achieve(if you want to call it an achievement) 99.

There are exceptions like runecrafting that are just at the bottom because of speed. Runecrafting is much more useful than all of those and it's still far ahead in terms of rareness.

Effigys did give some use to skills like that. Although I wouldn't say construction is one of them though because thieving is basically free with almost the same amount of effort unless you want to spend more and make mahogany tables. Smithing is easier than mining and crafting is easier than agility(just talking about speed). I could see crafting and smithing becoming less rare in time because of that reason. Very slowly though because even then 97 is where they stop being useful but some people can't resist not getting 99 if they got it all the way to 97 anyway.

But are those reason really enough to make it the second rarest 99 in game? For a fast buyable, 80mil isn't very expensive.

Construction is a newer skill relative to many others, has been historically costly and without much use. When compared to crafting, construction has been much more costly for a long time while crafting used to be cheap. It's also because people are hesitant to spend money on skills.

I think most people still see construction as THE money sink skill it used to be (or still is) and therefore not even bother calculating the costs.

For example, when I stand in the GE with my Construction cape on I get the occasional 'Omg Con cape, you must be rich!', I then tell them it only costed me 40m with SC hammers. Which is not that much at all if you ask me.

Well comparing construction and slayer: construction is a pointless money sink with little benefit. Slayer involves combat, which has always been the most popular aspect of RuneScape. People love combat. So training slayer is a byproduct of training combat. People have a reason to train it, but people don't have a reason to train construction.

With SC hammers, construction is indeed alot cheaper than people make it out to be. But that doesn't change the fact it still takes quite a while to get 300~ hammers and to actually level up.

Personally though, I got 99 constrution because I enjoyed designing my house and hosting house parties.

Off the main theme of the topic, but: What did you do to get 99 Construction at only 80mil? I could have sworn it cost more than that.

oak doors, 10 oak planks/door for 600xp, and at 250/hr I was getting 150k/hr. You could do it much faster, but I wasn't really paying full attention.

So basically most people think 99 being 2nd rarest makes sence, I guess I just expected the 2nd rarest skill to be harder than it was.

99s aren't always about what's hard and what's easy, they're about what people enjoy. I'd say most people absolutely despise runecrafting. Yes it's slow, but it's also tediously boring and yields no benefit other than effigies. Sure construction is fast and not horribly expensive, but again people find it boring, unnecessary, and not a good use of money. A lot of people find slayer enjoyable, mildly profitable, and a byproduct of training combat skills (which have always been incredibly popular to train). Probably most people would rather get 99 in a skill that they enjoy training than in one that's horribly boring and/or pointless.

I think these days people tend to invest any extra money in expensive skills that are more beneficial or necessary to train, such as herblore and prayer. You might think, "They're more expensive so there should be less people with 99 than construction," but there is a huge reason to train them (and of course they've been around longer, but that's not the point I'm trying to make :P).

The only reason I actually got 99 was because I made a bet with my friend and lost. I enjoyed making oak doors and it cost me 32M from 80 with SC hammer (granted I have over 20K sc points). It was 485K xp/hr and wasn't actually that bad. It's a useless skill that only costs more if you decide to revamp your house and isn't really that afkable. I won't be surprised if RC gets passed up by construction because of the introduction of eggifies.

Alone.... in your house... constantly replacing the same thing till 99.

^This. Construction is the most boring, repetitive, lonely and pointless skill to train in the game. (imo :P)

construction was my last 99 not counting dg i got 94-99 in not too many hrs and purposely saved it for last cuz it was fast

bad things about construction is its not afk but good things is that its fast

but thiers lots of fast skills so most people that do construction do it because they like buyable skills or just to max out

I stopped training construction at 69 when you could use evil stews to pot +6. The other 5 or so levels have come from quests, ToG and Livid Farming. 99 con isn't rare because it's time consuming; it's rare because it's a waste of money as it provides no tangible benefits past being able to make a gilded altar.

Funny how I only spent 40M on construction. I just did Stealing Creation for a while and made oak doors.

It's a pretty easy skill to train. I had a nice 100M+ invested house, but I destroyed it completely to make myself quit, which worked. I did try to rebuild it in a different way (larger dungeon and surface designed like the POH from that one quest), but I didn't really have the will to build it as I wanted.

I think the mechanics of training construction is perceived to be more difficult and complicated than it actually is.

When talking about 99 construction, the first thing most people will say is that it's an extremely expensive skill.

Like Runecrafting, construction is one of those skills where there is an extreme requirement to reach level 99.

Be it patiences, wealth, or massive attention.

Anyhoo, You're very lucky to reach level 99 construction for 80m. Mine was around 145m and that

was by strictly using mahogany planks.

I got 99 before effigies. It wasn't that bad; I didn't mind the grind of it at all. Rank 212 now for only having 21.2M experience. I agree with some other people here that its still regarded as the money sink despite its actual cost. I spent about 30M but I made every plank myself (when they cost like 500-600gp) ( :shades:) and used stealing creation hammers for about 3/4ths of 80-99. I've not bothered with SC after 99, although I have trained it 2 million past 99. Runecrafting will probably pass it like dungeoneering did.

Too bad I'll trim my Construct. cape with dungeoneering in a few days.

This is probably one of the best threads I have seen posted in a long time.

Most people don't bother with the 99 unless they have a ton of money sitting around, because once you get so high it is not worth training the skill unless you want 91+ for effigies..

Yeah, I agree with many of the posters here that it's pretty much useless unless you're rich. Yes, there's the pros of getting it for effigies, but it's pretty much useless other than that. However, you do unlock some features such as the ability to build demonic thrones and add more to your house, but again, you need a lot of money to make your house look good, and that money is relatively wasted considering what you could be doing with it instead of just using it for aesthetics in your house.

Personally, I would never get 99 Construction except to get the cape. I'm not someone to show off his wealth by wasting hundreds of millions on their house. I just build portions of my house that I can make use of.
