Turned out the girl I was gonna ask didn't have a date either, and we tried to hang out but both kept getting dragged away. I spent the whole night becoming steadily more bitter. Afterwards we went shopping for icecream, she kissed my forehead and I tried very hard not to storm out the door. That sort of festering resentment is exactly the wrong thing to have towards someone that close to you, and I'm pretty sure it was the start of a whole lot of other problems for me.
