Hated it, my main obstacle to learning languages was how verbs change in different situations, for Chinese, it's relatively simpler than English (no irregular verbs at least), and much simpler to say the like Russian or German.

You'll love Arabic then :P.

 

In German (and English) you have the conjugation of the type Apfel - Apfël (apple - apples) or sing - sang - sung - song, known as Umlaut. In German (I think also English, but not sure) it's no longer a productive system (e.g. it can't be applied to new words) but in Arabic you still have Ablaut (of which Umlaut is the unproductive version). You can, for example, form the following words from the stem k-t-b: 'book' ('letter'/'contract'), 'writers' and 'Qur'an school' - k-t-b is related to writing. The dashes are replaced with different vowels for each different meaning. The Arabic writing system is also pretty good for this, as the vowels are written over the consonants, a bit like our diacritics.

 

As an aside, it's pretty much a myth that some languages are harder than others, they all have to express the same complexity.

 

I just treat it like an afkable. Even though it makes me kinda slow, I have grown to hate the incredible degree of precision with which Jagex managed to make it just not afk enough to afk and still train properly. So I probably spend more time standing still than training div now, but idc anymore.

Because if the metagame doesn't change, then you aren't making a very interesting update, you're just making the game longer.

 

Say I made a 35x16 connect four game. It's still not possible to win if you go second (assuming perfect play), but the game takes a whole lot longer. On the other hand, if I make it connect five and allow two discs to be played per move, I'm actually changing the game, which means there's new stuff to explore and figure out.

 

Making new skills useful is also pretty much the only way to tie a non-combat skill into combat - quests with non-combat requirements do also work, but you don't need a whole skill for a couple of quest reqs. Combat is one of the largest parts of the game, and having no tie-ins at all makes you wonder why it's not a separate game in its own right.

 

Finally, making a skill useless doesn't make people like or enjoy it as much. Which is ultimately the goal.

Just re-read your question, I just realised that you asked what we missed the most, oops! lol

 

The part I miss the most: while strict correlation is not applicable in English, at least the words in English pronounce as they are spelt. Chinese? Good luck, it is not remotely possible to even begin correlating each word with a pronounciation (hence why learning SpokenChinese and Written Chinese can only be done completely separately). This makes Chinese very tricky to learn compared to even other Asian (Japanese and Korean for example have Alphabet like system, and it is written as it is pronounced).

 

Also, "a" (as in a leg, a ship, etc), is very generic in English, in Chinese every noun has its own 'unit' (like a cup of tea, but it also applies to all countable objects) that must be attached to every object, though there is a rather generic unit, it isn't as generic as English.

 

The verb tenses in other languages, for me though, serves as an obstacle for me learning another language, wasn't arguing that any language is harder lol, when I learned English, it was the only thing I learned the hard way. In fact, I'd say written Chinese is much much harder.

@Chenw: English is known as a language with horrible spelling conventions here, because it uses very old spellings (five centuries plus, easily) which don't match how the language is actually pronounced now. But it's true that a segmental representation is pretty convenient. It was invented only once, as far as we know, in or near ancient Greece. The Latin alphabet is based on the Greek, and so on until the modern Latin, Greek, Cyrillic etc.. Concepts, words and syllables are apparently much more intuitively accessible than segments.

 

Also an interesting note on Greek primordial gods: a certain interpretation of the creation of the world sees it as Ananke and Cronos emerging from Chaos. Ananke means 'force, constraint, necessity', Chronos means 'time' and Chaos means 'emptiness, vast void, chasm, abyss'. So basically, the current state of the universe is the result of 'force, constraint, necessity' and 'time' emerging out of 'emptiness, vast void, chasm, abyss'. I can agree to that (need to add 'space' I suppose).

Edit: emptied all the pendants I had left, that's one regular pendant for each skill and a bunch of prized pendants (I already put 14 prismatics on Divination, and some pendants were empty because I got them pre-99). Total xp gain: 33 x 41289 xp = 1362537 xp.

I made a resolution to use up all bonus xp I have, which means I'll have to get some 400k summoning xp plus some minor amounts in other skills. Finished off woodcutting, fletching, cooking, firemaking, herblore, divination and prayer today. Left: crafting, hunter, runecrafting, construction, farming, summoning, ranged, strength, attack.

~5m xp to go, about 5 months by bonus xp (less if a few promos come along, which they will). So yeah, slacking for the win :3 (getting 100k xp/day or so on average atm).

 

Really Divination isn't worth training until they release a real method, like a FF analogue.

It'd be awesome if the rifts sealed off after you got the level to get to the next one, and sealing the last one at 99 div. That way the race to 200m would be 100% bonus xp. Spinivation go :3.

Edit: finished summoning bonus xp, +785k xp, +934 ranks, 3770 overall now.

 

Edit: planted the highest level plant in each patch, except for the herb patches, because I'm not replacing my lovely torstol!

 

Edit: put about 7m into a dungeon for my house and some marble accoutrements. Incidentally, the name Super Super does not appear on the hiscores. I hope someone with the Super Super title grabs that one.

 

Edit: considering rebuilding my house with just the critical rooms aboveground: portals, altar, menagerie (and throne room). Just a dungeon entrance and the rest underground.
