The Sleep Thread

Assume Nothing

Recommended Posts

Even though my grades weren't affected in the slightest regardless of the number of hours I slept (night owl), I think I can provide a few bits of advice that helps me sleep.

1) Have *all* lights turned off. Lights tend to encourage the brain to turn on for some reason, so stay off things like the computer 30 minutes to an hour before sleeping. I do this 1-2 hours before I go to bed since it's a pain to get me to fall asleep (at least I'm a heavy sleeper).

2) Unsure if you also share this problem, but I wouldn't want to do much thinking or anything focused before sleeping. There have been times my mind wouldn't shut up and I always thought of 2-3 things at once (usually out of my own curiosity or creativity) and usually don't fall asleep at all. :|

In a nutshell, letting the brain relax a bit helps. Sorry I couldn't provide any more information.

Set a reasonable time to get up at in the morning (9:00 for me), and get up when your alarm goes off. Without fail, no excuses, period.

I've never met anyone who's tried this and it hasn't worked for them unless they have some actual disease.

I found that this helps a lot.

Right now it's almost 8 PM and I'm debating whether or not I want to go to bed right now. I was wanting to finish up some assignments so they'd be done early, but my printer's messed up and I'm really tired.

A lot of people think it's too early to go to bed at 8 or 9 PM, but it does help you a lot when you have to wake up at 6 AM every day for classes. It's not a very fun feeling to go to bed at midnight and wake up at 6AM.

I used to do this, and I think it does help you sleep. However, I stopped exercising right before bed because it just delayed me going to bed at a decent time. I just try to exercise early in the afternoon (after I get home from classes) and take a shower. Then I can just do homework up to the time I need to get off for bed (8-9PM) and jump in bed. It's a lot simpler that way since I'm a bit of a procrastinator (wasted a lot of my weekend playing goddamn Wakfu instead of knocking out all the assignments I wanted to work on on Friday and Saturday night). Believe it or not, but exercise can be an excuse for me to procrastinate from my assignments, and the later I push back the exercise in order to knock out my assignments, the less likely I will exercise. So, it's much better for me to exercise early in the afternoon (right after lunch or whatever) or later in the morning (when I wake up and eat breakfast on the weekend) then work on my assignments and use the remaining hours for free time.

Had another memorable dream last night.

In order to shut down some sort of nuclear reactor, I had to climb to the top of this huge concrete pillar (I was on the inside; think of something the size of a the World Trade Center tower except with thick concrete walls). It was really dark blue on the inside, so I could barely see anything. To shut down this reactor, I had to pull on this small chain which would release these four extremely large metal tubes that would fall the length of the tower and block something (which would then stop the reactor). I was given the job to do this, and for some reason I was super amped about it. I climbed all the way to the top and pulled on the chain, after which I let go and fell with the metal tubes all the way to the bottom, whooping and hollering the whole way down (not out of fear but excitement). I didn't die when I hit the bottom. For some reason it felt like I had just experienced one of the most fun things in my life when I woke up.

It was a lot cooler if you had dreamt it. :P

Sleep? Oh that was that thing I used to do at night <_< My schedule is not ideal for sleep. I try to get as much as I can, but it's very hard with work and college. Normal bed time is between 1 and 2 in the morning, and I wake up at around 7:30 to 8 depending what day of the week it is. I try to catch naps during the day, but doesn't happen as much as I would like it to happen. I miss the days where we had nap time in preschool.

The weird world of dreaming >.>

Why do we do it anyways?

I remember talking about this in psychology class, and how no one really knows. It's one of those crazy mysteries.

But I hear that all characters in your dreams (i.e. humans) are people you've seen before in your life. It might just be a myth or something, though. But the thought of that is creepy. You have a dream and in it is a person who walked past you in the city who you just barely glanced at.

We were taught that dreams are constructed of your experiences throughout the day/the past and that it is thought to help the brain reorganize information.

I lucid dream pretty often and have been practicing it for a while.

I had an extremely vivid lucid dream this morning, I could even feel the breeze. I was in my house, and I just walked around a bit and I went outside. Outside, there was a UFO attacking and shooting lasers at buildings.

I point my fingers at it like a gun, yelled "BANG!" and the UFO exploded.

I felt so badass.

I haven't bothered re-arranging my sleeping pattern since the end of summer... :P

It's ~3AM right now and I'm halfway through drinking a coffee. I expect to be asleep by 6 or 7am. Whatever..

I have to wake up at 5 am 4 days a week. I get to sleep 'till 7 on wednesdays, yet here I am, with an allnighter, that has become way too common for me.

To make matters worse, I have to share my bedroom with my brother, who comes back usually at around 11 pm and is very loud, so I'll be lucky if I get 7 hours of sleep a day. Generally, though, the sleep during the day, stay awake during the night and going to uni in the morning schedule works fine, but it gets broken on weekends for one reason or another.

I tend to go to bed around midnight, maybe one o'clock at the latest. Then wake up at 7:20 on the dot, with no alarm, no matter what. Waking up at that time gives me enough time to get ready for whatever I'm doing that day, play a few games, then head out and get [cabbage] done. Seems to work well.

Advice?

Go to bed at a set time. Period. I don't care if you lie awake for another hour, just do it. Eventually you'll start falling asleep earlier and waking up earlier because of it. Trust me, it worked for me. I used to be the chronic 5 AM, "Oh [cabbage] it's 5 AM? Gonna make a snack and go to bed guy." No longer!

After waking up early all during the summer to work, and waking up early for classes now, I can't sleep in on the weekends. But I don't feel super tired after waking up, either. Last night, I went to bed at 3am and woke up at 9am; didn't feel extremely tired.

Guess I'll try to catch up on sleep tonight.

The part of sleep I have never been able to master is the part where you actually get up. If I don't have a reason to get up (class or work), I often keep going back to sleep over and over because I normally wake up during dreams I like, and going right back to sleep allows them to continue. What I need is a bed that electrifies itself for about 10 minutes, 5 minutes after my alarm goes off. 10 minutes is enough to remove the urge to go back to sleep.

For me, the secret to not being tired is having a fairly consistent bed time. I used melatonin (sleeping pill that helps reset the body clock) for about 2 weeks when I knew I would be going to sleep around midnight or earlier every night. The pills were enough to conquer any urge to stay awake, and now I don't need them. My body knows that I am going to sleep between midnight and 1am, and I can no drift off into dreamland in either about 15 minutes, or 30 (I listen to tv shows when I go to sleep, and I always fall asleep around the middle of them for some reason), which ius amazing compared to the hour to hour and a half it takes me to fall asleep when I don't do it at the same time each night.

So the other night I was dreaming. And then I knew that my dream couldn't be possible in reality, so I woke myself up and convinced myself it was possible, because I was seeing it before my own eyes.

And then I woke up in the morning and realized it wasn't possible, and that I had woken up from a dream within a dream.

No, I'm not trying to be funny and play at that Inception movie. I literally woke up from a dream in a dream, convinced myself I was awake, and therefore what was happening around me was real.

Real trippy.

I can function on 2-4 hours of sleep but since I don't have school or a job right now I've just been sleeping A LOT. I'll go to bed at 5-7 a.m. then wake up around 8-9 a.m. and feel fine, but then I just close my eyes again and try to fall back asleep. Once I get back to sleep though, I usually don't wake up until 12-3 p.m.

I love the feeling of naturally waking up early and going back to sleep, but it makes me feel terrible when I wake up the second time. Usually when I force myself to not go back to sleep, I feel better the whole day, and my morning is much more productive.
