Powerfrog
If jagex actually wanted rid of bots they could easily replace randoms with a capcha you must answer. No bot can read a capcha, that's the entire point, so the bot would fail, and the player would be banned if they failed several times. It would not rely on player reports and it would be expected and tolerated by legitimate players, just like random events are now. We have been dealing with random events for years now and they do NOTHING towards 99% of bots. Why can't we do a 5 second capcha instead? It would be easier for a legit player to solve than a random event, and it would be impossible for a bot. Bot problem solved. Of course they're not actually going to do this as they value bot membership fees, but i hope this will put an end to complex the frankly bizzare suggestions i've seen in the past. Before you say it. No. This would not take much effort on jagex's part. They could pay a capcha service a small amount of money to use their system and set it up in minutes. And no. Bots can not crack capchas. Advanced scanning tools may be coming closer to being able to, but a script kiddie in java script will have 0 chance of cracking it.
Sy_Accursed
Bots can do it quite successfully; this is why the old captcha based fatigue system was removed. Powerfrog
Like the 10th time I hear this.Bots can solve capchas. No they can't. They solved runescape classic ones because they were runescape ones and each had its own ID and there were only like 100 different ones at most. A capcha system would have millions of different possibilities and would be external so no bot could detect it by an known runescape 'ID' as they do now. You provide no discussion or debate value if you just make an obvious suggestion and say "It'll work and if you say it won't then you're wrong." Trust us. If it worked, Jagex would have done it. Or rather if it worked, jagex wouldn't have removed it(Fatigue system in RSC). You see spam bots on every type of forum with a capcha; even TIF. Capchas are just a measure to keep them under control because it stops the cheap ones. Even if it was external like you say, doing that would be an inconvenience to ordinary players and botters would find a way around it eventually. As they always do. Cheaters found a way to bot before IDs, so they would be able to overcome this too. Hexiled Razz. Player since March 8th, 2005.
Sy_Accursed
Yeah I have to say runescape having used captcha and removing it as it failed and masses of websites and forums having captcha but still having spam bots get through is far greater in terms of evidence to support an argument than 1 random poster say "no they can't" with no citable proof of any kind. I could say that living healthy normal lawn grass is not green as a statement of fact, but without evidence to prove this it doesn't hold up as you can clearly get any number of photos that evidence the opposite; replace grass with bots and "not green" with "cannot solve captcha" and you have this suggestion thread so far. The Observer
You wouldn't believe the amount of spam bots we have to deal with. If they can get past it, then I'd imagine Runescape bots would be able to do it as well.
Helm_Lardar
Why do people honestly think captchas work? they filter only the worst bots. I'm sorry, but if you think this will work, then you shouldl look up the old 'fatigue' system. I'm not an efficienado.
Powerfrog
But they can't read capchas. It's physically impossible in the current bots for them to detect an external host and actually read the completely random capcha. If there is no debate to be had, it's probably because my part is too solid to argue against. It's physically impossible, no matter how many forum spammers get through other capchas. (How do you know those aren't humans entering the capchas by the way? I've heard of capcha readers but they have huge fail rates and do not know how to solve most, which is why capcha is still so commonly used, i refuse to believe they're commonly cracked.) Doesn't change the fact it can't be done in a runescape bot client.
Sy_Accursed
Captchas are easily cracked, its why they are constantly being updated in new quirkier ways.Yes basic form filling bots can't crack them, but rs bots are much more complex to begin with and any mid > high level bot can easily master captcha most of the time. There's no debate because again you have produced NOTHING that backs up your argument; where as we have several examples of solid proof bots can break through captcha.Yes a current rs bot can't read captca as they have no need to this is true, but given 1 - 2 weeks max they can code it in. The same way new random events got coded in. Also forum spammer =/= spam bot; they are called spam bots for a reason they are the automated ones that post advert threads that re-appear under a new name every few weeks posting identical ads. Danny_TeamDan
I think the program jdownloader reads captcha and fills it out for you it wouldn't be too hard for them to figure it out. Yeah it would work at first until the people who made the bots updated them.

We've provided evidence that bots can read capchas, while your "argument too solid to argue against" has provided no actual proof that bots can't read capchas. If you saw the way bot clients and scrips work and had any sort of knowledge in the scripting field, you would be able to tell that it would be easy for scripters to work in a algorithm to crack capchas. Be it a week or a month, it would only stop current-dated bots for a short amount of time. After a while they would be back up to full strength with nothing solved. Hexiled Razz. pulli23
For bots there's an easy way around captchas: Once a bot in a network encounters a captcha, he is forwarded to a living person. This person than solves the captcha and the bot continues. Living persons can do many thousand captchas an hour, there are whole companies for this. But on top of that, bots will soon adopt a "point" style: where you earn your own client points by solving captchas for other bots. (and each point earns you a captcha for your bot solved). First they came to fishingand I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing Then they came to the yewsand I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews Then they came for the oresand I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak out for me. Fallen_GIGO
In my eyes the best way to stop Botting without taking away freetrade is toa different timing on in game actions all the time and also to have a constant update script being peddled into the game, once a day for different timing.
