Whatever they do, it'd better not be yet anpother technical solution...

I said this before, but...

Anything you can come up with, goldfarmers/botters (there's still a diff?) will eventually adapt to it, and all the works has been for nothing...

Hell, Jagex cheers about it every time it happens, but taking down a gold-selling site is simply not going to work as they just set up shop under a different name...

So, "breaking bots" will either be something predictable, or revolutionary enough that it changes the game completely...

Make random events where the IDs of objects change every 24 hours or every update. Allot a few thousand ID's to these random events to allow this.

They definitely have the ability to do this with the memory that they have.

Started free trade with 1.5m cash. 2 weeks later, have hit max cash 2x.

PvP drops: 359 Brawling Gloves, 11 Vesta's Longswords, 41+ Zaros/Ancient Statues

9 Dragon Full Helms, 3 Dragonfire Shields on the old PvP loot system

Brawler guide is being finished!

I don't know how their current system is built, but they should work on a model that allows them to make invisible, uninteractible(?) objects within the game with the IDs of legit things, like dragons and trees.

A PR stunt to sell RuneFest tickets. Maybe they couldn't find enough fanboys, so now they have to come to the real community, who pretty much all (to varying degrees) hate the new corporate Jagex.

At this point NOTHING is going to convince me that Jagex is "trying their hardest" to stop bots. I like @totalpwnage's ideas and they're relatively easy to implement - but will it happen? NEVER. Jagex is way too dependent on the bots' membership $ to keep their wallets fat to care now.

Interesting. I was pretty sure they had previously said that "RuneFest will not be a time to talk about bots" or something.

FYI here's the complete list of insider sessions: http://www.runefest.com/whats-on/insider-sessions/

Yes, the one time when all their players are there with them with no barriers and no dodging questions is not the time to talk to players about what the players want to talk about. That sounds just like Jagex.

I'm like a hot mess, but without the alcohol.

If Jagex had no real plans to combat bots, it would have been VERY easy of them to avoid the bot issue at Runefest.

The fact that they've brought it up and are showing a willingness to talk about it makes me wonder if after all this time, they do have something up their sleeves afterall.

Quite looking forward to seeing what comes of this anyway

@Octarine19 I don't think so - I think this will be more of the same propaganda we've been getting - something like

"O look we banned 20,000 bots in one month" - but wait, we forgot to tell you that most of them are 7-14 day temp bans, that they keep all their ill-gotten gold, AND that there are 500,000 bots out there that we didn't ban. Mission accomplished.

Highly doubtful. If Jagex wanted more people to show up, they'd just offer some free goodies. I can't see anyone showing up to Runefest just to get an "inside scoop" on bots.

idk - going along with the new $$$ Jagex, giving out free goodies = - money.

Angry people who buy tickets to complain = + money

Those tickets are NOT cheap either.

I think one of the biggest reasons that runefest isn't already sold out is just price and location. I'd be going this year if I had the money, as would a fair few friends I'm sure, but I guess theres not much they can do about that :( bring on runefest 2012 though!

Not if those goodies are worth less than the cost of a ticket.

People who are angry at Jagex aren't going to buy tickets for Runefest. Did you buy one?

@sly

touché.

Although that aside, I still think that they're doing this for more PR than anything.

[insert anti-jagex fanboy rant]

OT: I'm a realistic and a skeptic, so I'm going to sit back and what. But to the people saying that we should implement things such as CAPTCHA and alike, these things have been broken by spam botters before (and I'm not talking in RS, but rather the type that sends you those emails about Viagra and the ones who sign up onto forums and offer iPods for $9.99. You'd have to be using a higher order 'human' detection system.

Every ID has its own models etc, overriding it would cause gamebreaking bugs or just be really hard to do. This would be much simpler. They tried this before and it broke everything in the game, lol

Why?

Because this means the bot owners will have a TON of work to do EVERY update. It will cause bots to break whenever they get a random. The only way they can combat it is by getting people that get randoms to log out, send the developers of the bots their username and password, what random they're in, etc. so they can do some debugging and find out all the ID's and stuff again.

Then again, the bot devs also might be able to go through the ID databases, and just set up the code to different ID's etc.

I've got a question..

Apart from the whole "Herpderp they only want money", why would bots only (or mostly) get rolled back/reset instead of perm banned?

I guess that is a possibility, but I would like to hear an answer from JaGeX specifically to be certain. Preferably without beating around the bush.

The cynical side of me wants to agree, but I thought the event was already sold out.

I fail to see what they can accomplish at a fan convention that will draw a rather small, local subset of the player base. It just smells like shiny, happy, hand-holding PR to me.

IOW, what could they find out fron the Londoners at RF that they couldnt find out from people all over the world?

Unless they are going to all going to drive down to Geneva and try my Large Hadron Collider suggestion.

I agree with that, re-removing wilderness & free trade is an obvious part-fix, but I highly doubt they will go back on it. But desperate times, desperate measures & things are pretty desperate at the moment. As for something revolutionary, it's quite possible, something along lines of having a cheat detection program a requirement to play? That has the massive effect of having a download requirement though, and if that was to happen they might as well change the game to client based only, which could be potentially as destructive as re-removing wilderness & free trade.

As I have said many times, I have thought about it a lot, it's mind baffeling trying to find a fix that wont damage player numbers, but is it worth the risk in what has to be a declining legitimate player-base anyway?*

*personal opinion & not fact like some may state.

They are still selling the single day ticket, but the VIP sold out pretty fast, I think the tickets they have left are because the venue is massive and the event is more walkabout this time around, I can imagine that gives them a lot of leeway with how many tickets they can sell, I don't think it's because no one wants to go just that they have a massive amount of tickets.

Betting 'Breaking bad(bots)' is just their way to suppress the bot rage at the event.

'Hey why don't you ban bots?'

"We will discuss @breaking bots".

And the breaking bots will be all like:

Player1: Why do you not ban bots? You need a better detection...

MMG: I'm really happy for you and imma let you finish, but our detection system is the best of all time. ALL TIME.

Yeah we get the idea, you're not the first pessimistic person to post like this, maybe read the post & come up with something original that contributes because it's getting kind of old now. It actually states that they will tell us there future plans on how they are going to deal with bots & then opens up for questions.

Not that we will ask questions & they will answer, so it would seem they have a plan, and as it's not going to be implemented before RuneFest that would suggest that it's one that requires time to develop or initiate this future plan. (To add some speculation of my own, they have possible devised an idea/plan & this has caused them to decide to announce it at RuneFest & get our feedback, responses, & possibly answer some of the long-standing questions of why it's taken so long).

As I say, no offence but the pessimistic responses to everything & everything Jagex are all over the forums, I'm really looking for the more positive opinion, rather than the pessimistic opinion which is probably in every single post on the forum lately.
