Interracial Relationships. Yes or No?

When i was still in "normal school" (can't come up with the proper english name for the state school till your +- 17) I was good friends with a couple black girls, and also guys from the middle east, asia and places like that. I never heard any "read between the lines" kind of comment about those girls since they were adopted very young and therefor had "dutch" names, but I remember about 1 guy in my class when i was 16/17. he was called Ismael, a turkish/morrocan name obviously. At the time I didnt think os anything my dad said when he asked wether i had friends in lass and i said "yea sure, i get along good with Hans, Tim and Ismaël, among others" but looking back at it I think he slightly frowned upon the last name.

Currently I study archaeology, I'm inthe 4th and last years so i follow a specialisation, a different study that might or might not have something to do with your norml school. you pick it yourself and I, since I study archaeology and I like WW2, went for the closest WW2 thing I could find, a training for history teachers who will specialise in WW2. There's a lot of ppl from turkey and Morocco in this class, which I mentioned at home once and I think dad frowned upon that. Never broughti t up again

Then again, he also "frowned" upon my music taste at first (metal) but nowadays just ignores that/ got over any questions bout that/ I dunno.

the "problem" isnt't mixed breeds in my case, it's the opinion on islam/immigrants in general, which are often looked upon as one and the same.

I've never even gotten to a point where a discussion about immigrants could be brought to a proper level, let alone get beyond that point and talk about "other races in general", LET ALONE mixed breeds. I always grew up with this feeling of "everything's ok" with my parents, but recently that image took a hit in my mind, and that, I'll just be honest, troubles me........

Edit: my grammar checks get a bit rubbish at 3am when I've had some alcohol.... I'm hitting the hay now, let's go on about this tomorrow

I don't see any problem with it.

Of course, there are the morons who think that if they date/marry a person they have to adopt a stereotypical persona of that person's race (e.g. a white woman marrying a black man and suddenly having a taste in rap music and wearing dark-tone makeup and wearing weaves in their hair). I guess it has more to do with people wanting to fit in since there's still somewhat of a taboo against intermarriage, especially in the South.

With "the south, I'll assume you mean the South in the USA? aka the former rebel states from the civil war? I know my basics of USA history, but not every little bit of it, despite my fascination with history...

Now I'm going to bed for real, it's 3AM here, damn myself for not keeping an eye on that....

I'm currently organizing a 5k Walk to End Jungle Fever. We will find the cure.

But nah, really, I don't think it's a bad thing personally, although when I do see a black man with a white woman I do get inexplicably angered. No other combination bothers me, which is weird.

I don't have a problem with it. People are free to date who they like.

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

I think talking about interracial relationships in 2011 is a bit ridiculous.

Edit: Also, as a parent, I would think it your duty to explain to your child that people come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. Yes, it's understandable that you might worry about your child being confused as to why "mommy and daddy" (or "mommy and mommy"/"daddy and daddy") look different, but I don't think that that should deter you from being with someone you like or love. Especially if you don't even have a kid yet?

In response to the first post - it appears that you're confusing 'race' with 'colour'. The social stigma against interracial relationships exists primarily because of the racial prejudices inherited in each and every one of us, expressed in a subtle form. I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as the relationship works and both parties consent to it.

I don't see why a parent should intervene with such a personal issue - it would go against the basic right to choice (unless there were a good reason, i.e. girlfriend is a drug addict, although this is irrelevant to the point of interracial relationships). If it goes against a religious set of rules, then maybe it's time to question whether that's the right religion for you - why should it dictate what you should/shouldn't do?

I've seen many functional relationships between different races, social classes, etc. It's up to you to make it prosper.

EDIT - In response to the thing about children: I guess it may be necessary to give them an early lesson in the birds and the bees, and the concept of 'love'. I fully agree with Serpent's point in this regard.

Oh... and

But i've kinda always had a thing for asian girls.

Typical white boy.

Personally, I mostly only find white girls attractive [with some latino and the occasional asain] but hey - if you're into other races, far be it from me to stop you. love is love, regardless of color or creed [or genitalia]

Yes. I'm white and I don't really find white girls all that attractive. I find black girls extremely sexy though. I'm currently in a relationship with a black girl and she is amazing.

As for family issues, my parents and brother have no problem with it at all. My grandparents/family on my mother's side are quite racist against black people. They live in Iowa though, so I don't even know if they know about my relationship. Even if they do have problems with it, that's their own issue. I love her and no matter what anyone says I'm not going to let it tear us apart.

When we go out in public we do get people staring at us every now and then. It's mostly black people that look at us funny, some even make comments as we walk past them. My girlfriend and I just laugh it off though. We find it amusing how ignorant people can be. We figure, if we don't have any issues with the racial difference, why should we let some random stranger's opinion make us feel bad?

I can't really argue against it since i find Asian girls extremely attractive.

If other people have got a problem with it, it's their problem, not yours.

I suppose the problem in some relationships might occur because of religious beliefs or cultural tradition.

Agree with it in principle but in some cases the children of interracial parents can get hard times because of it. Because the child is mixed race, some are never quite accepted by either race as one of their own and can get grief from both sides. Sad fact but it illustrates that racism can be a two-way process.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

It most certainly has.

To me, it seems it's extremely dependent on both parental views, and social views of the subject matter - even the most caring and accepting parents cannot successfully provide a proper upbringing in an environment where everyone holds some level of prejudice against a child. As highlighted in Kimberly's case, sometimes it's not the parents views that really matter.

If there's both social and parental support, there's nothing stopping you - unless you disagree with it. Free your mind, I say.

I know this isn't directly related to the question of whether interracial relationships are right or wrong, but it's something interesting nonetheless.

PBS's Sorting People

Most of this world is just going to end up a shade of light brown, give it 300 years. Already we are seeing the decline of "race" (should be referred to as "ethnicity", not race) across the globe--especially here in America. Self-identification on ballots, surveys, and job applications is becoming nearly impossible for some people, most of whom I would guess are products of interracial relationships somewhere in their ancestry.

As far as interracial relationships go, I don't have a problem with them. I think the biggest problem people have with interracial relationships is their fear of another person's skin color and the personality or character traits commonly associated with that skin color; and most of the time that only comes from not understanding the other person. Most people are afraid of what they don't know or understand: "that person looks weird!" or "that person talks differently than I do!" When you break it down, the only differences between people are how they were raised and what environment they were raised in. Anyways, I digress. I think those who do not approve of interracial relationships are either very entrenched in traditional relationship notions or are projecting their own fears or misunderstandings on other people.

As always, a great film that pokes fun at the ignorance of those who disagree with interracial relationships is the classic Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967).

I have absolutely no problem with them and have been in several.

What is of more concern to me is when the cultures and religious views clash significantly, which can make things pretty hard.

I found a panda and then we bought malt liquor. I hold my malt liquor better than a panda.

And I thought my weekends were good. ._.

No.

Destroying peoples lives and forcing them off the grounds they lived on for generations is okay, but a white guy and a black girl together is a no-go?

What's wrong with you?!
