Absence of auto-typing

looololol

Recommended Posts

So I logged in on an F2P world in G.E., and found no autotypers. I saw several level 3s standing there, silent, so I assumed a PMod had done a recent run through that world. I commented on it to a passerby, who said he hadn't seen any autotypers in W1 G.E., and he had just been there.

I hurried to W1 G.E., and found a sea of level 3s, as normal... but silent. It was the strangest thing I've seen in quite a while. I checked some other worlds, and found not a single bot.

Does anyone know what is happening? Did Jagex manage to mute all autotypers in one go?

Although not very effective, it's nice to know that Jagex at least acknowledges the problems in F2P worlds.

Hopefully these are perm mutes...

Knowing Jagex, they aren't :wall:

I'm almost certain that RWT-spamming is a perm ban. The problem is that with the ease of account creation, and auto account makers (that will even walk to the GE), it's a losing fight even if they are perm bans.

Nice to see them finally doing something...but

Seriously, why the [bleep] aren't these lvl 3 throwaway ad bots even getting perm bans? You send a jmod out to manually find ad bots (great bot detection tech there...Can't even detect auto typers..), just to give them temp mutes? So they can mass advertise again soon?

O wait, these ad bots must count toward the numbers of rs being the "number 1 free mmo".

What an embarassing way to deal with an embarassment.

Yeah. Bots would be a lot less of a problem if the standard punishment was a perm-ban.

It isn't really going to help much since I muted ~1680 auto types between the 26th of July and the 26th of August and that didn't make much of a difference really.

Jeez that's dedication.

At Runefest:

"Jagex, what are you doing to stop autotalkers and bots?"

"We go in game and mute them now." *shows pictures and videos of JMods doing just that*

"Didn't you say like, four years ago, that this was ineffective and one of the reasons you needed to remove Free Trade/Wilderness?"

"..."

Well, the argument that's being made is that they're doing something. It's just that this something isn't enough. :|

While it takes a lot of dedication not to give up and just switch chat to 'hide', getting that many spambot mutes is NOT hard. Just logging into W7 GE, I can usually get ~30-40 mutes right away and then another 1 or 2 per minute after that as new bots log in / walk from Lumby.

Hm.

Unusual, especially considering prior paradigms of -

Wait wait wait wait.

I just figured out Jagex's anti-bot master plan.

By suddenly increasing J-mod activity in the game, even for a brief period, it may be sufficient to scare a number of botters off botting for some time. Those who are botting on their mains will hesitate and think twice before leaving things on for extended periods of time. This slight reduction of bots will in turn, free up additional resources to combat gold sellers/level 3 skillers, and etc.

Right now, the situation appears to be hopeless because bots seem to snowball. So what happens when such snowballing occurs in reverse?

If they can pull it off that would probably have an effect. It would take pretty much all their staff though to clean all the worlds in one go. It's not the ad bots you need to take out to scare people strait, its the real bots. If poeple suddenly see all the bots are gone, then they might think Jagex is serious about solving this sometime in the next century.

Not really. I didn't spend much time doing that. I would have done more but rl got busy.

Cue the "bring back the old days" and the "Jagex does nothing" rants.

Consider it a good thing that they've sent in a JMod to start muting - temp/perma/permaban - these guys. I realise it is of little true value and probably is more suited to be characterised as a stunt, but wiping out some, even for a little is better than letting it go on without any "recognition" (which is debatable, but that's how the anti-Jagexers would like to think).
