The various wars the US wages is for the liberation and benefit of whoever survives them... if they can survive the ensuing, probably worse regime that media doesn't cover. But the US will always be happy to foot the bill so long as we get to add another satellite country to the list.

I like how you only listed the negatives in the OP...

yea, wheres the mention of all those billions going to the military industrial complex or of the patriot act?

I was thinking more of afghan democracy, greatly improved infrastructure and quality of life, but okay.

But has that raised the quality of life for the average afghan? Even if we take democracy in itself as a purely positive force the impact on the population has been debatable.

I didn't support it then and I don't support it now, though my country still has troops deployed over there and has the second highest non NATO presence (after Australia). Iraq, however, is a very different kettle of fish.

Colossal waste of money. The amount of corruption in the new "democracy" there is astounding and we could spend another ten years there without the situation getting any better. Just leave already, it's too expensive.

And the U.S. is still occupying Germany from WWII.

what

The US still has bases in Germany. I'm not sure how that's an argument in favor of continuing the Afghan Occupation, considering our Empire is drowning the United States in debt. Oh, just like every Empire before it. Other than the USSR, another good example is the French Ancien Regime:

The state was constantly at war.

The rich were exempt from taxation.

The constant wars and tax cuts for the rich resulted in an enormous debt.

Innovation was focused on moving money, not investments that generated wealth.

The elite were entirely self-absorbed in their own interests, regarding the common people with contempt.

Elections were corrupted and eventually eliminated.

All Empires collapse; that's probably one of the few good things to come of this occupation -- what emerges from the ashes could be bad, though. Also, it is true that surveys suggest women's lives have improved.

what

Occupying a territory 10 years after conquering it is nothing. Anyhow, going into Afghanistan in the beginning was justifiable. And even if it wasn't, the rule of thumb is if you make a mess, you clean it up. The U.S. should've done that 30 years ago, but better late than never?

I think a safer rule of thumb would be stop making the same mess over and over again. A ten year war that produces no results is utter stupidity especially given its cost.

Once again, saying this war produced "no" results is a gross simplification.

It certainly has produced many results - not that the cost was worth the results, but there are positives. And of course, we don't know what might have been had the war not occurred..
