Time for a new release of the: >>>Tip.It Times!<<<

NOW ACCEPTING ARTWORK/COMICS:

The Tip.It Times is now accepting submissions of artwork and comics. If you would like to make a submission, please PM it to tripsis.

I'd like to remind people of the rules pertaining to Times threads:

[hide=Read these rules before posting in this thread]

Rampant flame wars have taken control of virtually every week's times discussion topics. The following guidelines must be followed when posting on this topic. Posts that ignore these guidelines will be removed.

1. You are invited and welcome to express like or dislike on articles and a particular author's writing style. It is not acceptable, however, to flame or personally insult an author. Posts that aren't anything but an attack will be removed from the topic.

2. Spelling and grammar errors can be reported to tripsis by PMing her and they will be fixed promptly. It is not necessary to post them on the discussion topic.

3. Off topic posts that do not discuss the content of that week's articles will be removed. This is not the place to discuss the direction of the times, how much you love or hate the times, etc. Off topic posts will be removed.

By keeping within these guidelines, Times discussion topics will mean more for the Panel and Administration than just a place for flame wars. Flame wars do not provide any useful feedback to the Times, which is mainly what we're aiming for with these topics: feedback.

This policy is effective as of now, November 17, 2010. Any posts prior to the creation of this policy may or may not be removed according to the new guidelines.

[/hide]

When replying please make sure to clarify the article you are replying to! Thanks!

If you spot any typos or mistakes in the article then please PM them to me :)

Enjoy the articles!

Is it just me, or does the formatting in the article "An Open Letter to Mr. Mark Gerhard" look off?

mO6uR.png

Yeah, the picture is too big, that's why

I - mostly - agree with the article about F2P, it's something I've always believed in - but I'm not sure if it's also really true. Keep in mind that Jagex has access to a lot more statistics than we do - there might be a reason for them doing this.

Also, the argument about the 99.97% bots in f2p was a bit skewed, as the main factor of the price rise for sharks after the bot update is how the ratio of players:bots fishing sharks is, not how many bots there are in f2p.

The number is still a lie(Just imagine it - with only 100k member bots, that would mean 333 million f2p bots), but the argument wasn't that sound.

Article about firemaking - I agree that firemaking would need a revamp that goes beyond just a new skilling method. The question however is how easy it is to do that with the whole skill already being in-game.

The article about the favourite updates was an interesting read :)

Fire: Hmm, spent a bit too long describing what fire was (something everybody knows), making me wonder how on earth this related to runescape, and then cut the article short just as it was actually getting into something I wanted to read and comment about. Fire suggestions are interesting things, even if (in my opinion) they should never have implemented the skill in the first place.

My Favourite Things: It's nice to see a positive times article! I can't imagine playing with all of those things except bank tabs-I'd rather use the search button at the moment.

Letter to MMG: the analogy of Sun and Wind seems slightly misleading, since the sun is still rather punishing. It's just a gradual, not-alarming punishment-like the frog analogy: get a frog and put it into boiling water and it will jump out, put it in cold water and bring it to boil slowly and it will die. Equally, the community of hardcore f2p who like the challenge won't open their wallets.

On the other hand, I've got to say I do agree: Jagex could really do with slowly releasing nice things to f2p that aren't particularly beneficial to members, like they did with canoes. That was nice of them.

Join the Editorial Panel: I was amused that this was considered 'fictional'. I'd like to write a guest article for the times one day. Maybe I will.

I'm not an efficienado.

You'd be surprised how many people DONT know what fire is.

Whether it was too long or not, it's an article about firemaking... It's hard enough as it is to make it interesting ;)

I'm frankly surprised that Tip.it would publish a letter from 1 anonymous F2P'er ending with "Your truly, 7,500,000 active free players "

That kind of blatant misrepresentation is not something I would expect tip.it to condone :(

The referenced page that number was gotten from lists 1M+ subscribers and 8.5M+ active accounts. How is it misrepresentation?

f2punitedfcbanner_zpsf83da077.png

THE place for all free players to connect, hang out and talk about how awesome it is to be F2P.

So, Kaida is the real version of every fictional science-badass? That explains a lot, actually...

The question is - are 7.5m active f2pers in support of that very article? Does the views expressed in the article represent the views of the average f2per?

The numbers are very outdated. It states there are 1+ million subscribing accounts when we know from the highscores that there are only roughly 600k right now.

Either way the letter was a good read with a lot of points I agreed with.

The article about fire could have made some further suggestions about how this skill could diversify, it only speculated on xp gain for current uses (i.e. cooking). So I felt it had good potential as an article, but didn't quite get there.

The 'Favourite Things' article, was a delight to read, having recently seen so many negatives about updates and changes....it was wonderful to see someone writing about how the updates worked well for them.

I felt that the 'Open Letter to Mark Gerhard' had strong and weak points. It's strength lay in trying to ascertain that no further game content was going to be removed from F2P and I felt that was a fair thing to ask. Its weak areas were its meaningless use of stats and declaring that the article represented the views of 7,500,000 active free players , I would have liked to have seen the survey sent to all these players!

That isn't the question. Even if the letter does represent the views of 7.5m f2p, it's still misrepresentation to put "yours truly, 7.5m active free players", unless 7.5m active free players specifically said they wanted to be included as sending that letter. Tons of letters are sent every day that I agree with in principle, but if someone signed my name to the bottom of them without my permission I"d want whoever did it to be charged with criminal forgery. (well, other people have my name in this world, but if they either forged my signature, or signed it with both my name and my address, either way, that's a felony under US law)

When someone's name is at the bottom of a letter, it doesn't mean that they exist. It doesn't mean that someone had good reason to believe they would agree with the contents. It means that actual person, approved the mailing of that letter to the listed recipients. By extension, 7.5m f2p active players at the bottom of that letter means you actually asked 7.5m f2p players if they wanted to be included in that tally. That's the way it is.

Generally when the editors review an article, we read it as a whole instead of skimming it and taking one line too literally :)

No one is taking that line too literally. Everyone is perfectly clear that it's a figure of speech. It's just something that is not done, if you're aiming for a professional mode of conduct. I often see references to that here, so I thought I'd mention it. *shrugs*

Please stay ON topic and if you really want to go off topic then PM each other.

I was on-topic, he took it off. The comment was just on the side. :)

Like saying Forsaken's next chapter was very, very good. -on topic

It was so good it makes her look a bit sexier. -on side

See?

Anyway, no idea now how to tell how many active f2p accounts there are at the moment. I think it's a safe guess that most of the active, nonbotting f2pers didn't like losing the high scores.

Probably a good 3+ million.

Was Deathknell, but the password recovery never worked for me. So I'm this now. Whatever. Someone get me some damn fried chicken!

The fire article was easily the most pointless read I've ever endured on the Tip.It Times. No doubt this post will probably get removed since it's not positive constructive feedback, but I'm sure the BBC did not have to explain what football was for half of the Liverpool vs Manchester City match report on their website today, just for any reader to gain some comprehension of what they were talking about. As a reader I hold common sense, the real life ability to cook food, and an A-level in Chemistry, but feel free to lecture me and waste my patience nevertheless as if mankind hadn't discovered fire many thousands of years ago. A more useful analogy would be the cringeworthy difficulty the author had in creating his own suggestions for the skill, and extrapolating that to how Jagex must feel about the skill's presence in-game and its perpetual irrelevence to daily RuneScape life.

I'm sure they'd get rid of it tomorrow if they could. They've recently been more honest about content such as waterfiends and how they should never have been released in the first place. I've no doubt they'd give Firemaking similar treatment--'We hate it, but it's too late to go back now.'

I personally found the fire article to be quite refreshing. It's something people take for granted quite often and don't think until it does something terrible. But for heat and cooking? Pfft. No one really gives a thought. Then comes a time when there's none and then the thinking begins. Only when negative things in relation to fire occur do we really think of it consciously I think. :)

And firemaking was put into the game because on RuneScape classic stoves were rare.

I agree that we do tend to take firemaking for granted in the game, particularly once you're over a certain level and can start every fire without fail. However I'm not sure what you found 'refreshing' about the article, there was no new information there. It would have been good to see some imaginative ideas put forward....for example: a series of increasingly difficult fire building and making tasks that lead to the ability in constructing your own smithy in the grounds of your RS house. :P

Or being wildly outrageous, what about fire used in combat? Setting firetraps or throwing firebombs that you have to light from a ground fire that you have built.

Firemaking is already used in combat: Dwarven Hand Cannons, albeit not directly.

A even less direct way: Inferno Adze, when you use it as a weapon

I personally never looked at the history of fire itself outside of the game, thus why I found it refreshing. And no I don't mean just caveman stuff to. :P

Ugh – the "F2P are people too" rant …

Ya know, for my money, there's nothing like biting the hand that feeds you. Literally.

Now now, we don't need to throw that stale argument around. :shame: F2Pers have a say in the game too, even if they don't pay. And while the article may not feel like feedback to some of us, it hopefully will give some insight on what some of the community is feeling right now. In the end we're all players of the game.
