Iamdan
In order to make prostitution a profitable business without the drug dependency and sexual slavery that plagues illegal prostitution, it would have to be so expensive that illegal prostitution would still be in huge demand. Australia has regulated prostitution, and we are one of the most expensive countries in the world to do business in and we don't have big issues with illegal prostitution afaik. Iamdan
Fine, we'll call barely making a living at a fast food restaurant minimum wage, but forced sex in any circumstance is rape.Interesting take, however yours is a philosophical issue which is somewhat apples and oranges when it's about legal terms. If someone is financially forced into a bad paying job they hate, using your logic couldn't you call it slave labour? I'm not saying either case is right, but with such a complex society you get a lot of grey area.

Riku3220
I don't have any problems with the idea of prostitution itself, but I don't like the idea of thousands of women (and some men) to be able to say "Screw education and hard work, I'll just have sex for a living." Seems to be going backwards or something.

Wouldn't it depend on the person? When I worked at a checkout it sucked the life out of me and I hated every minute of it. I would cringe when people I knew came into the store. Would you have sex with 1 slightly overweight 50 year old woman for $50/hr? Probably not. What about $1000? $100000? For that much I wouldn't consider it undignified, I'd gladly do it and brag to my friends about it. Everyone has their price, prostitutes have found theirs. Same case with labouring. It's a shit job and nobody wants to do it if they can avoid it. What about labouring in an Australian mine, 1000km from anything in 50degree c heat doing 12 hr days? [bleep] no. Oh wait, they pay 6-7k/week + expenses. Now everyone wants to leave their lame office job they studied so hard for to do it. Then you have women in the sex industry who really enjoy what they do. It's not even about the money. I've met a few and they were just regular women who loved their job.
Randox
To be fair, if you describe it as "I have sex for a living", I think that's a job a lot of us would probably enjoy. But then you have to think it through about the weird stuff people are going to get you to do, and the people you are going to be having sex with, and yeah. I don't think that's for me. Interesting point about people having their price. The money wont make you enjoy a job you hate, but it can make it worth while. It would be interesting to see the numbers on people who have sex for a living because they feel they have no other option (and maybe they don't), because they are forced into it, and because its something they chose even when they had other options. Of course, I doubt those numbers would ever be possible to obtain accurately.

This relies on the assumption prostitutes have no choice in what they do or do not do and who they do or do not take as clients to be an issue. In places where its legal or people doing it illegally by choice don't HAVE to do anyone or anything they do not want too; they can be as exclusive or as far ranging as they wish. And of course people doing it through choice are likely to be a bit more sexually adventurous than your average joe and enjoy trying out these "weird" things. Judging by the lifestyles of many of them, they don't make a lot of money, so they get whatever they can get. Say they have a choice between one client with a strange preposition and not getting one at all, they'd probably pick the former. People hiring prostitutes would probably be more likely to try something adventurous anyway because since it's illegal, it ends up being between them and the prostitute. Even if it was legal, it would probably be the same way (think of lawyer-client privilege and doctor-patient privilege). If you do something more adventurous (something that they would feel embarassed about because after all it's something personal) with a co-worker or girlfriend and someone found out (think of fights or break ups), it wouldn't be that great would it?
