RuneScape: Best Browser Game and Game of the Year on Massively.com

RuneScape has been recognised as Best Browser Game and Game of the Year in Massively.com's First Annual Frindie Awards! Needless to say, were hugely happy with this achievement and proud to receive such high praise.

RuneScape was commended for its accessibility, the sheer volume and variety of content available, and the frequency of its updates, as well as for the decisive blow struck against bots last year. It's truly awesome to see that, even at 11 years old and with the competition fiercer than ever, RuneScape still stands out from the crowd.

Check out the full article here.

Last year was an epic one, with the introduction of customisable Clan Citadels, our first fully-voiced quest in One Piercing Note, and Bot Nuke Day, and weve got a lot to live up to in 2012. With all the awesome content we have planned for the upcoming weeks and months, you can be sure well be doing just that.

Best Browser Game: RuneScape

Runner-up: Glitch

The browser is one of the most popular MMO platforms, yet it still somehow remains a mystery to many MMO gamers. Regardless of what any comments section might say, the browser is the true workhorse of MMO land. It pumps out content for millions of gamers spread across scores of different devices and operating systems and does it all over the world. The browser is going to be the go-to place for developers, and very soon.

RuneScape is the king of the browser. Heck, Jagex's flagship title is one of the kings of the entire MMO landscape. Not only has it been around for a decade, but it shows zero signs of stopping. Very frequent updates keep players on their toes, and browser access keeps the game accessible.

Game of the Year: RuneScape

Runner-up: Glitch

I have to say that this was probably the hardest category to even begin to pick a winner for. I am in love with so many games and from so many different genres. That didn't make my job easier. I decided in the end to go with RuneScape for a number of reasons. First, the game is accessible through any browser. That means players who might not own a gaming rig can jump in along with me. Next, the game has more content than almost any game I can think of. I have spent months in just the beginning towns, attempting to finish off a series of achievement quests that are region-specific. The problem is that I keep getting sidetracked with holiday events, socializing, finding adventure, and learning new things to stay busy with. Lastly, the game has been around for nearly as long as I have been playing MMOs. That means that it now has layer upon layer of lore, quests, player interactions, and characters that make it feel plain epic. And yes, I absolutely adore the graphics.

If I ever get bored with MMOs, I can always go to RuneScape. If I want to spend a lazy evening crafting, I can do it in RuneScape. It I want to explore, meet new people, roleplay, grind, adventure, create my own armor and weapons, and a host of other activities, I can do that in RuneScape. A great percentage of that I can do for absolutely no money. RuneScape is practically a perfect MMO in my opinion. This year it released more content than many "AAA" MMOs, stopped bots in their tracks, and did it all relatively smoothly. That's saying a lot for a game that many gamers consider "only for kids."

Good point although GOTY isn't that special a lot of games have GOTY versions it's just a way to promote them as so many company's dish them out. but then again I might just be looking at it differently..

It was interesting to see his comments about "browser based games" and how he feels that they are medium for future gaming development. Particularly since so many people here tend to argue that Jagex should be moving Runescape away from the browser format ...

Zynga would disagree, given their popularity mainly comes through Facebook, but RuneScape is so far removed from Zynga's games that it barely deserves comparison. Browser-based MMORPGs on the scale of RuneScape are all but dead, even if browser-based gaming itself isn't.

I think it really depends on who their target audience is. Zynga targets casual/social gamers - people who I wouldn't really call "gamers," they just want to play a game or two if they're bored. Then there's the hardcore gamer audience. Those are the people who are more into the client/console-based games and games that are built for more long-term and intensive play (rather than the "mini game" style). I think Jagex is somewhere in the middle. They have a long-term MMORPG on their hands but they also value accessibility rather than just targeting hardcore gamers.

With HTML5, and -especially webGL- we can rapidly see browser based gaming increase. And then actual browser based gaming, not something like JAVA which only runs through a browser, yet doesn't use the benefits of browser based programs. (Safety for the user is a prime, total independency of platform, speed a third important factor).

WebGL allows for (default) operations drawing speed to be just as fast as native applications, the only thing that won't work is custom shader models etc. (They'll first have to be passed through the CPU, so a clever design might pre-cache them during loading of the game). THIS will be a very big future factor of gaming, as those things are ideal for iPads/galaxy notes and tablet computers. Also they will work correctly with cloud computing, which might very well be the future of whole PC operations. (I personally really dislike that, but it IS the current thing).

Then they came to the yews

Then they came for the ores

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Your desperation to diss Jagex is so bad that you do it even when it is something totally out of their control?

They certainly had control over whether to "brag" about it with a newspost.

Seriously, if rs deserved any recognition, it should have been a few years before when it had a much more dominant position in the mmo market. Now out of the blue some sitedubs rs game of the year? I would not be surprised if jagex's pr team paid off the site to get it.

Edit: actually, scratch that last paragraph. Just read more and found just how pitiful the "friendlie" awards are. No one needed to be paid for that shit. On the same blog is a more recent award giving mmo of the year to swtor.

It is true that the friendlie awards are far from as big as the golden joystick awards. But it is still an award and something Jagex should be proud of. And we both very well know that IF Jagex was going to buy awards they wouldn't go for friendlie.

Don't you mean it's better to offer greater rewards to your players (Like a Bonus XP Weekend!) like the games that came ahead of RuneScape? You know, buying your position.

Funny that you should say this in a recent thread:

Interesting... I definitely disagree with some of the things the awardsperson said - Runescape has definitely been on a decline in the last few years, and I don't think there's much argument against that. True player numbers were revealed (sort of) with the botnuke, and they were a lot lower than I personally expected. That being said, I don't know that we're currently on a decline any longer - that remains to be seen. The botnuke provided a possible major turning point, but it's hard to say which way it'll go - a short upward bump in the overall downturn is possible, as is a complete 180. To be fair, I think a lot of it hasn't been particular to Runescape; from the few other MMO-ish games I play, which are all at least browser-accessible if not primarily browser-based, all of the non-hardcore-gamer games have been on a big downturn on population. (Puzzle Pirates, for example, is currently merging eight servers into five, largely because where they used to have hundreds of players on a given server at a time they now are lucky to hit 200 on peak hours, depending on the server.)

I can see best browser game, and I think I agree with it. Game of the year, though... it really depends on what the competition considered was, but I don't think I agree with that one. In this upcoming year, maybe, but not for this past year. I think the fellow writing may still be largely biased by the excitement of trying something new; it sounds like he hasn't played RS for an incredibly long time, if he's just now working on most of the achievement diaries. While RS is a great game with an enormous amount of content for a new player, that's a result of building up over the past decade, so I don't think you can call that + the bot bust the Game of the Year.

However, it is indeed nice to see a positive perspective from a current player for once, as opposed to incredibly negative perspectives from players who have "quit".

Obtained quest cape and base 92 before obtaining any 99s! Currently finishing out my 99s with the (long-distant) goal of comp cape.

Hmm. It's a bit tough for me to agree with what the person said if I take what they said at face value, but that's due to my own personal bias. For that matter, I think abstaining my position on his judgment is a wise move.

I do agree that RuneScape remains one of the most accessible games, and it has had a wealth of content infused into it - more in the former half of its lifecycle than the latter half - but for most MMOs, the amount of content and frequency of updates still can't be compared.

A potentially positive topic seems refreshing. I wish Jagex well, seems to be not as bad as before I took a break a few months ago.

I can understand best browser game. Best game overall, not so much, but I do agree about browser-based games being the future. Services like Steam could evolve to browser-based gaming as server space becomes cheaper and connections get faster.
