15-February-2012: The Rio Carnival Bring On The Dancers!

It's party time in Rio! As people from around the world don their headdresses and masks in readiness for a week of Carnival madness, we're getting in on the action with a week's worth of Carnival flavour.

dancers.png There are J-Mod hosted flash-mob parties aplenty, competitions, and - of course - what carnival could be complete without some suitably over-the-top-headgear? Getting your hands on the headgear couldn't be easier. Come to a party or speak to Diango in Draynor Village to grab this exclusive holiday item. More information on the week's carnival action can be found here ([qfc]199-200-938-63567097[/qfc]).

Your Carnival headgear could also bag you some cool stuff from the RuneScape Store, in a competition that's so easy to enter you'd have to be a bumbling party-pooper to miss it! Find full details on the competition here ([qfc]254-255-154-63567090[/qfc]).

Finally, we've tested our flash-mob mechanics on our very own J-Mod guinea pigs. To see the results, watch this:

Viva o carnaval!

Mod Luiz

This Friday, we'll be running our next Forum Q&A session, to answer the burning questions on everyone's lips about the TzHaar update, the Early Bird Bonus and the changes to Effigies, as well as any RuneScape Community questions. In attendance will be:

Mod Mark: The one and only Mod Mark is the lead designer of RuneScape, and can answer any questions about RuneScape Content or the direction of RuneScape development.

Mod Edam: As the developer of the The Elder Kiln and The Fight Kiln, Mod Edam is responsible not only for the awesome TzHaar update released this week, but also for the development of future TzHaar content. If you've any questions about the new quest and minigame, or want to prod him for clues as to what's next for this unique RuneScape race, this is your chance!

Mod Stevew: Our very own Mod Stevew will be on hand to answer any community questions you might have. Whether it's about events, social networks, fansites, competitions, or anything else community related, Mod Stevew's the one to ask.

Presided over by Mod Jane, these three will answer your questions from 8pm – 11pm (GMT/forum time) on Friday the 17th of February 2012.

For further details of the session, see this thread ([qfc]14-15-422-63568868[/qfc]).

See you there!

In reference to the video:

Now if we could just get all the non-relevant development teams stuck in that alternate dimension until the teams relevant to fixing the lag complete their work. The less changes to factor in, the better. Heck, maybe we could have all of them do testing of changes until they get it right? :P </rant>

Like as if that would ever happen... Oh well...

Flashmob, eh? Okay then...not sure how I should reply to that video. At least the headgear looks alright, somewhat.

Q&A session? I have some memories about how those go. I'm not holding my breath on the whole effigy issue (since that's going to get most of the attention), though.

Meh not too hopeful on this.

First of all, it'll get spammed by effigy questions.

Second, knowing how Q&As went in the past they would answer several question repeatedly, often thrice or more even while ignoring other questions or dancing around the issue. I doubt it's going to reveal much new stuff.

Fix the low fps. Signed almost all of Runescape players.

This. Also, effigy questions.

Honestly, they should just make one for effigy questions tbh.

Well if it bothers you that the game is more fun now, then you can go cry in a corner. :shame:

your article was the equivalent of a circumcized porcupine

The only thing wrong with it is the lack of a percentage for when you need to stroke it.

This, to both of them.

Honestly, I only got the hat since I was in Draynor at the time and didn't want to get the annoying spam upon logging in. I know they do things for "fun", but it'd be nice if they took care of their more serious problems first. As for their Q&A, I expect a lot of the questions to focus on effigies.

Honestly this carnival thing is so spontaneous and thrown out there. I literally feel as if jagex said "let's invent a minor holiday and a piece of headgear to make it a legit inclusion into the game." Tthere is literally no information given to us other than spring is supposedly "carnival time." I wish jagex would elaborate and maybe say in the UK/EU there are typically random carnivals traveling about. <- this was just my assumption on the update.

"invent a minor holiday" are you serious?!!!! Carnival is MASSIVE in South America, Brazil and Caribbean etc and starts today I think. There is a huge portuguese speaking community in RuneScape just because you don't know what it is doesnt mean it's a made up event. It's not a UK/EU holiday.

I CLEARLY stated I wished jagex would have elaborated more on the introduction of this event for the sake of those who aren't versed in those cultures. Matteroffactly I laid out my post in a manner so as to come off suspecting it was a cultural event not found in the Americas.

To me your post wreaks of "dumb American." I prefer to make attempts at being more culturally sensitive so please watch how you word your posts.

Mercifull's not American :P

Of course, to someone who doesn't know anything about most foreign cultures, this came across rather oddly to me - it feels somewhat misplaced in Runescape, at least (especially since we haven't had them annually).

But it is a european holiday. It is an (originally) catholic holiday (other christian religions might have it a as well) that officially starts february 19th this year. Ash wednesday (february 22nd this year) is the beginning of the fast period (sp?) 40 days prior to Easter. The official carnival "season" starts at November 11th (11-11, eleven being the fool's number) every year.

Here, it involves dressing up, drinking, mocking the establishment and phony folklore marriages. The way it is celebrated here, it has some comparisons to the brazillian/carribean way of carnival.

The first qualification to being stupid is running around telling everybody else they are stupid.

Let's face it the world is full of those and 90% of humans under the age of 21 qualify.

I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to be one big party before Lent begins (Where a substantial portion of Christians, specifically Catholics, and probably some Orthodox groups, go without many luxuries for the 40 days leading up to Easter). It's actually pretty prevalent in the Americas. The US has its equivalent in Mardi Gras, and I'm guessing that most of us have at least heard of heard of Carnival (It was even the subject of a Simpsons episode, from when they were still funny).

The point being that it isn't some holiday that Jagex invented to give us a silly hat.
