So, I've never played a video game before...

Don't raise your defence level.

Too late. But it's only level 6 so I don't think the damage is irreversible. :P

I played through the tutorial and ended up at level 8, then I met up with Arceus and danced around Draynor while playing with Toy Horsey's. Tomorrow I'm gonna cut down some trees! I like this game and will probably stick around for a while in order to get better at it.

Thanks everyone for their help, and especially Arceus for being my 5am dance partner! :D

While I am pretty sure pure accounts are really fun (I have plans to start a Zerker account in the near future), I don't think that your first account, when you are just starting to learn the ropes of the game is a good idea.

To elaborate on the advice not to level defence. Many Pvp (player versus player combat) builds rely on having low defence (commonly known as pures). This is more of a specialised account type and I wouldn't recommend it for a first account style as it is more for fighting other players than general gameplay and makes the rest of the game more difficult in general.

My opinion (just for clarification):

The worst thing you can do when you're getting into gaming is to listen to other people. It's just how it is. Most people, when they find a game, will approach it with a certain type of personal motivation. Whether to conquer the game, beat other people, become the best, have fun, etc etc. Listening to other people right as you begin a game isn't the worst crime, but it's the worst thing you can do when you want to enjoy something.

You should just wander mindlessly until you find something you like. If you really need help, just look at the website information guides.

Just my opinion.

I'm appalled that the first reply on this thread was that combat is runescapes 'main focus'.

This is just not true at all; to Jagex's eyes the quests and the story are the main focus of the entire game as they are what drive everything forward.

In terms of a player there are a vast array of options available, combat is one of these certainly but it is by no means the main focus unless you personally focus upon it.

And I'd agree with the advice of just explore and find stuff out, there's plenty of guides on fansites to give you extra insight once you stumble upon something that interests you, people on a forum will generally just give you biased advice tailored to what they do in-game opposed to a general view where by you can w/e you like. As perfectly demonstrated by posts like 'runescape is combat focussed' and 'don't level defence'

I'd like to mention that it's fun to spend money, in RuneScape as much as irl, so if you have spare money, don't be afraid to buy something extravagant.

To be fair, I think you might find the community can be a lot more fun than the actual game at times! :P

Like any game, just set yourself an objective and try to complete it...although if you're like me or a few of the people I know, you'll have a short attention span and move on to something else to do ingame!

For example, focus on trying to get a certain item, completing a certain quest or minigame or even have a bit of fun trying to raise a few levels.

And always remember that the community will help you with anything you need help with!

Hope you have fun joining this game and community/family! :D

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for their warm welcome to both this community and Runescape in general. I feel truly welcomed to the world of video games, and thanks to your support I plan to stick around for a good while and keep perservering until I truly succeed. :)

I am recording my progress in a Blog, which hopefully will offer a somewhat entertaining insight into the embarrassing misadventures of a total newbie. :P

Use a maul for slayer

Haha, I'm joking, but it's a very good point. When i first started playing I was using rune daggers over rune scimitars because I thought they were cooler. Every weapon (and armour) in RuneScape has it's own stats found in the worn equipment interface.

Also, don't mage or range with melee armour on.

I will give you 100k coins to start you off if you want

Thank you very much for the kind offer, but I'm trying not to take free stuff. I don't like accepting gifts in real life, so I don't see why I should be any different online. :)

I've managed to earn my first 1million gold already. So I don't think I'm doing too badly. :D

I've killed a lot of cows ;)

I also discovered that the trick is not to spend anything unless you earn a profit back from it; the only investment I've made that didn't instantly result in me earning more gold was my set of Mithril armour.

I'm pretty quick at picking things up and I've had a lot of helpful advice from members of Tip.It who have added me ingame. I really appreciate the help and it's been fantastic meeting all of you so far. :D

Wow, I didn't make my first million gp for 3 months. You definitely are getting there quickly! Good luck! You can add me too if you want. I would say I am a pretty helpful guy. :)

Really? Cause as I recall it was you who was the one cussing me at base. Also, re-read what you just said: one 15 second delay (which is an exaggeration to begin with) ruins floor times? You are beyond ridiculous.
