This "free trial"

Tbh if you ask me it almos looks like it was launched on accident. Why be so secretive about it? Plus this whole trial thing would make way more sense if it was permanent. Just think of the changes to the members tutorial - It *expects* that a new member is a new player. The colour changing to make it possible for trial F2Pers to distinguish between what items they can and can't keep. All those stuff. I believe the trial will come back permanently, and if not it would honestly be a stupid move on Jagex's part.

I'm surprised it ended. It was smart business sense and hurt nobody (although people still manage to whine about it). I think this could be another case of a good idea shot down by whiners on the RSOF.

Eh good thing it ended. If gold farmers had cracked the way to get the free trial, they could have churned out a bunch of accounts and start using them to pick up 2nds or do any other activity that needs no stats, using their free 2 week trial. And then when the trial is over, they would have just churned up a new character to replace it. Basically free members.

Basically this. Though I'm sure Jagex could potentially limit the easy ways of churning out the accounts.

This could be rectified by implementing the now-standard trade limit until the account actually purchased P2P.

Permanent trial would be a dreadful idea unless Jagex found a way to limit to 1 per person, which is literally impossible.

Otherwise you'd get constant supplies of low level throwaway pures that people build in less than 2 weeks. (Or train in f2p and have 2 full weeks of p2p questing/pking)

Trial members already have special GE limits applied to certain items but they aren't done well and end up being a slight annoyance.

I think a permanent free trial would be great if they fixed this/came up with a better solution.

Do these "trial members" have a trade giveaway limit? If not, the reason to limit it to 50 per transaction but to allow multiple sales is obvious-and I don't think I'm allowed to post it here.

Battle staves are the same too. You make like less than 50k for the 80 a day you get when you could get 200k+. Honestly I think it's the people catching on and using the dailies to make cash.

It's not just about dailies being less profitable (that's to be expected as more people become aware), but at the prices I observed it wasn't profitable at all and therefore no incentive for anyone to be doing it.

Maybe a few (relatively new or inactive) people still do it and wait a few hours to sell the staves above market price and make a small profit.

Woo! Got my free trial today on one of the 3 accounts i tried. (I have no idea why. This one was done with wiped cookies/cache and my regular UK IP)

They don't take your credit card details by the way, so it's impossible for them to charge next for next months fee early and screw you.

I inquired about this on one of the new Billing Support forum threads on the RSOF. One of the mods sent me a private message including the below statement. This is all that the community Jmods are allowed to say about it:

A small random selection of players have been invited to try out the members game as part of a trial. We may invite more people to try out the members game in due course and the trial may be available to other players in the future. We cannot comment further on this as it may affect the results of the trial.

I guess this explains why the new tutorial was made members. Now it doesn't matter.

I'm surprised this didn't happen years ago under the last CEO (the one who was all about putting members advertising in the free game, and brought us things like the gnome copters). Its a good plan, and I'm sure it will do a lot to help bolster the membership roster. It might also allow them to ease up a bit on the marketing front.

And at the part where only some people are getting offered this, well I\m not sure what that is about. I suppose they are doing a study to see how effective it is, and what problems it might create, before they roll it out as universal.

Randomness is probably to check its efficacy as a marketing tool, and to prevent a bunch of "testers" like us from signing up for it when we wouldn't buy P2P on that account anyway.

Just FYI, all 3 of my testers have been offered the trial now. Lol.

I of course can only use one as a serious account (and i am! Being a noob again is fun!) but i thought i ought to add that in there, to get a sense of the chances of an account being accepted.

(Note one of them was level 3 and only logged in once for a few seconds. So levels/playtime aren't part of it. Someone looking to abuse the system could simply create 100s of accounts and hope they get 50 members etc.)

So they have created a nice little bridge to go from F2p to P2p...

But who on earth would these days actually start playing RuneScape from scratch as a person that is completely new to the game?

How else would someone start playing?

  • 2 weeks later...

It's back. The 14-day free membership trial period for new accounts is back.

As you can see, there is no option to ignore this free trial. You MUST activate this trial period to log in and play.

This trial period, if implemented long-term, can have a devastating effect on Pure F2P clans. With no more 100% f2p accounts created, it will potentially destroy the future of such clans. Even if most of you don't see the harm in non-optional free membership, there are hundreds of others crossing our fingers and hoping Jagex doesn't discontinue our future.

Ok, how are the pure F2P clans affected in the slightest? Unless I'm mistaken, you don't have to continue on member skills or even stay in member areas. If a person wants to start a pure F2P account, they'll probably be able to accomplish that. I think it's as simple as going into the task list and selecting "Tutorial Off". At the most, you just miss out on new players that stayed F2P after the trial, happened to have leveled member skills, and cbf'd to start a new account without touching member skills.

I hope this trial works out personally. The new member's tutorial is very good and show cases lots of things RuneScape can offer. To be honest, the quests are just so good, I hope they redo all the low level and free to play quests.

Correct. They simply never log into a members world.

As soon as I finished customizing my new character and chose their display name, there was a cutscene of the Troll Warzone and then I found myself in the screenshot above in a members world. There's no option to start fresh in f2p. The closest you can become to being 100% f2p is immediately turning the tutorial off, home teleporting to Lumbridge and hopping to a f2p world.

My concern is with new players which have never played RS before - there are good chances they will use the members content within 14 days of account creation and hence will never have an account free from membership. Even if one created a new account with the intention of making it a pure f2per, they'd still have the benefit of 6 GE slots (even in f2p worlds) and possibly a few members only songs, despite any item or level caps placed on them.

I dont think someone that logs on runescape the first time ever, would even care about being pure F2P.

He/She probably doesnt even know what it is =P

At the moment you want a pure F2P, it aint that hard to do as you wish.

I dont think anyone would have their first account to be some kind of pure anyway.

This is a good thing as new players get exposed to the P2P stuff.

Probably alot of them wish to remain a P2P cus of that & thats exactly what jagex wants!

Be polite. Be efficient. Have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

I had to test it and it seems it works...i just used one email i never used in rs and trial got activated...gmail seems to put it automatically in spam folder so i found it from there.

Also you dont have to play troll warzone things at all...once you in game you can go tasks -> options -> set tutorial off and your acc is ready to go anywhere and also spin wheel 2 times lol

I just noticed my character cannot chat at all...not even in quick chat...

edit: i was able to talk when i logged in little later

You can still be pure f2p if you use email that is already used with your other account

I think it's actually sickening how keen you F2Pers are on pure F2Ping. I don't loathe your experiences in F2P, but you guys seem to think that one xp in P2P ruins the character. Why are you so hell bent on being pure F2P?
