The non-adventures of Spimuncular! :D

Hi there! My name is Alice, I am 22 years old and I live in Jolly old England but am Irish by birth. :) You can call me Alice, Ali, Spim or whatever you prefer. (Some people have even started calling me Spirm, and I'm cool with that >.<) I am currently studying an English Language degree at university and hope to become a primary school teacher as well as publishing a fiction book which I am dilligently working on at present. Along with my active social life, I have been a pretty busy bee lately and so what could be a better new hobby than online gaming? I hear it isn't too time consuming . . . Right? :ohnoes:

I am relatively new to the world of gaming, despite working in an independant computer game store. In fact Runescape is my first ever videogame and holy cow it's an amazing new experience! I have always possessed a slightly geeky side and watch far too much anime, but I cannot believe I waited so long to indulge myself in the world of gaming. If I ever do silly things or make newbie mistakes please bear with me as this game definitely has a learning curve for a simpleton like me. :P

I am making myself a blog not to show off my accomplishments as to many of you they will be somewhat trivial, but to maintain my focus on Runescape. I am far too easily distracted and feel the need to track my daily activities in this blog so that I can give myself some form of structure in this truly expansive world to which I still feel like an outsider.

If you have negative comments to make about my "noobish" goals, please feel free to do so in this topic or ingame. (Name's the same as my forum handle) But I reserve the right to belittle you, call you stupid or simply ignore you. Depending upon my mood at the time of your needless negativity. ;)

Anyway, that's enough pointless rambling about me! Let's get down to what you visited this topic for: My goals!
Here is my current progress! :D

My Progress

She would never forget that day. Until that day, she had everything she had ever hoped for. A lavishly decorated home, a family who cared for her . . . and all the Fresh Lobster she could eat. Life in Burthorpe was sweet indeed. Her father had taught her the basics of swordplay, but she had argued and fought his efforts at every turn. She was the daughter of a highborn noble family, why would she ever need to wield a blade? The largest conflict in her life came when choosing which finely crafted dress to wear each morning.

But that was all taken from her the day the Trolls swept into town. The knights and druids of Taverly fought back against this brutish invasion, but for each well trained soldier who had courageously taken up arms there seemed to be at least two gigantic beasts willing to smash their heads in for pure sport. Such warfare was foreign to Spimuncular, but when the Knight commander put out a call for all available swordhands to rally together and fight back against this bloody invasion, she had found herself unable to retreat with the rest of her family. Despite her father's staunch protests she found herself readying her sword and charging into the fray with the rest of the terrified populace.

So it was that she found herself dragged into the damp, hostile cave in pursuit of a small troll squadron who had broken away from the main force during the conflict. She almost felt sorry for these lumbering oafs as they fled the battlefield. Were they too being dragged into the conflict due to random circumstances, merely casualties of a harsh society based on a regime of violence and brutality? Spimuncular snapped herself out of her thoughts - This was no time for remorse, especially when she recalled the chants of "KILL ALL HUMANS!" coming from these beasts' gruesome leader as they mercilessly cut down innocent men, women and children she had until now considered friends and neighbours. In truth, to Spimuncular these former residents of Burthorpe had been nothing more than peasants. But in death every man becomes a hero. People rarely speak badly of the dead; to do so would be an affront to Guthix and would leave an uncleansable taint on the offenders' soul.

The trolls fell quickly under her blade. Why wouldn't they? Spimuncular had never been a proficient fighter, but she possessed the discipline ground into her by her noble father and showed little fear in the face of this adversity. A task made much easier by the master archer who had insisted on escorting her into this cavern for her grizzly mission.

Her first sign of fear came when facing off against the hulking giant who had presumably installed himself as chief of this particular troll squadron; she balked slightly in the shadow of this terrible beast but when she heard the Archer yell "CHARGE!" the fear left her mind and she felt her feet moving as if independant of her body. This must have been how the heroes from the stories felt when fighting in the God Wars; hesitation would not help her protect her homeland, so on this day it had no place in her heart.

After a bloody battle during which several Burthorpe guards fell at the hands of this beast, Spimuncular knelt beside the bloodied corpse and bowed her head in silent prayer to Guthix. For too long she had coasted along on her family's success; if she was going to make it in this wartorn landscape and truly make a difference she was on her own. She had to gain independance and truly make something of herself before she could take back what was rightfully hers.

With this sobering thought firmly in her mind, she rose to her feet and lifted her tremendous two handed blade above her head. She gazed at her reflection in the fine steel surface and a look of grim determination fell upon her face. Her home was gone - Lost to these troll invaders, and she had to do something about it. Today was the first day of the rest of her life, and she would stand idly by no longer as the country she loved fell to ashes around her . . .

Song of the day:

I began my humble journey by exploring and completing a few quests, making friends and generally making a lot of stupid mistakes. I cannot go into great detail about this day as I was not planning a blog so did not record specific events. But at the end of my first day, these were my stats:

When she stumbled into the fine marble kitchen of Lumbridge castle, Spimuncular was not expecting to be accosted by a very angry chef. His face was the colour of beetroot and a vein throbbed so dangerously in his temple that she feared it was likely to burst. Her hand instinctively fell to the blade on her hip as he bore down on her, but she chided herself for this foolish action as the chef noticed and shook his head in despair. When he had finished lecturing her on barging into his kitchen uninvited Spimuncular finally managed to ask him why he was so frustrated.

From his inane ramblings, she managed to ascertain that he was trying to bake a cake for the Duke's birthday party. That's when the idea hit her. The Duke! If anyone was able to advise her on how best to start healing the land, it would be the duke. With a hurried promise to help the castle Chef prepare the Duke's birthday cake, she sped outside into the cold to track down the missing ingredients for the Chef's culinary masterpiece.

The guilt Spimuncular felt when stealing eggs and milk from the local farmer was abated when she returned these items to the kitchen's master, who seized them gratefully and turned on his heel to get on with his work. Why he couldn't have done this himself she would never know, but these chef types could be extremely picky. Spimuncular knew this from experience . . .

She felt herself getting frustrated as the chef completely ignored her presence, so eventually after a few agonising minutes she stormed across the kitchen and tapped the buffoon on his right shoulder. For the second time this afternoon she felt something hit her in this very kitchen, but rather than a brilliant ephiphany this time it was a solid iron saucepan! Spimuncular collapsed to the floor and held her now thoroughly bruised eye as the chef stammered a nervous apology. Clearly this man was on edge about the Duke's inevitable reaction, which did not bode well for the ruler's demeanour and gave Spimuncular serious doubts about whether an audience would help her case afterall.

Regardless, she soon discovered this would not matter as the chef assured her an audience at his banquet would be impossible. It seemed it would take more than robbing a few local farmers to gain an audience with the duke, which struck her as funny since this was in fact what the man dedicated his entire life to doing.

Song of the day: Emilie Autumn - By the Sword

Wow, what an eventful couple of days I've had! Questing, Earning Gold, Making friends and doing that all important skill training. I chose to dedicate a few hours to mining and smithing as they seemed the most logical skills to begin with. I found out afterward this was not the case, but I managed to achieve my first level 50 skill anyway. :P My next step is going to be achieving 30 in each of my combat skills, since I'm tired of seeing so many red names when I mouseover people and want to reach a slightly higher combat level to prevent this.

I would like to say thank you to everyone who has added me to offer encouragement and advice, as well as friendly conversation. I would also like to mention the members of the hyt friend chat. You've made my first few days of Runescape very enjoyable and you are all wonderful people. :)

At the end of my second/third day, these were my stats:

35mi1rp.png

As you can see I still have a long way to go in my goal to achieve 50 in all skills. But I feel like I am making progress, albiet going rather slowly at first. :)

Spimuncular sat on the grass outside Varrock, staring up into the sky with a thoughtful look on her face. It had been several days since she left her Burthorpe home and so far she had tried her hand at both Mining and Smithing. They had seemed the logical choice since she had spent a lot of time with the Blacksmith's son in her hometown, much to the chagrin of her father.

But these two activities had not sparked her interest; she seemed to be investing a lot of time with very little reward. So what else could she do? What else did all the heroes of legend have in common? Suddenly a thought came to her and she leapt to her feet, excitement filling her body and propelling her toward the grand exchange.

Ten minutes later she stood in the centre of Varrock adorned in blue robes, a Mud Battlestaff clutched tightly in her hands. It was time to practice some magic, she just hoped the world was ready for her . . .

Song of the day:

In the last couple of days, I decided to level my magic skill as my third 50. :) I was helping in this task by 2noob4you1, who kindly lent me a Mud Battlestaff and told me the best way of training my Magic skill at low levels. So a big thank you to him! :D Once I hit 43, I switched to Superheat Item and the levels flew by. I am unsure which skill to train to 50 next, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. :)

At the end of the third/fourth day, these were my stats:

14l3ep2.png

This was not what Spimuncular had in mind when she set out to become a hero. Chopping down trees and breaking her back fishing for lobsters on the beach of Catherby - These practices tended to be excluded from the Bard Songs and legendary tales of Heroes, but she figured they were a necessary part of the process. After all, Ardougne wasn't built in a day.

Some of the things she had heard said in Catherby made her cringe. Arguments raged all around her, sparked by the most ridiculous circumstances and with little provocation. People yelled profanities at the top of their lungs and all cursed something known as "Jagex". Spimuncular reflected with a sigh of exasperation that she must not be the only one who found fishing so uninspiring, if the activity spawned so much bile and misplaced hatred as this.

Song of the day:

I finally paid for members! :D No longer am I restricted by my Trial Account and I am now able to train member's skills. I found that fletching leveled extremely fast and I managed to gain a few more 50s. I'm getting closer and closer to my goal! :D

At the end of this day, my stats were:

r2swoi.png

Edit: Wow, that screenshot got messed up when saving. :s But you get the idea!

In her life, Spimuncular had done many things she was not proud of. Her upbringing as a noblewoman had given her a sense of entitlement she was finding difficult to shake now she was trying to make her way in the outside world.

Yes, she had done some shameful things to those around her. But joining the Lumbridge thieves guild was not one of them . . . After witnessing firsthand the Duke’s refusal to invite her to his Birthday feast despite her efforts, she had no time for the uptight Lord. So it was that she found herself looking for allies elsewhere, after stumbling into the cellar of a local home during a failed pickpocket attempt on one of the Lumbridge citizens.

Her relative inexperience in the arts of subtlety did not seem to phase one Darren Lightfinger, who greeted her openly and even introduced himself as the Master of the brand new Thieves Guild! Spimuncular thought that seemed a little foolish since to him she was nothing but an idiot who had fallen through the trapdoor into his hideout, but if it meant she got out of there without taking a beating from his rather large henchman she was all ears.

His request was a simple one; she was to steal a Golden Chalice from a local man and return it to Darren so he could forward it to his buyer and fund the further development of his brand new Guild. Spimuncular was not so sure she liked the sound of this shady stuff, but she found it hard to refuse the promise of a generous reward and the friendship of the local thieves guild sounded like it could be very helpful in the coming days of adventure. With a hurried nod she agreed to carry out this task, but not until she did a small amount of training as a pickpocket.

2m80gau.png

According to the “Master Thief” Robin, her target lived in Lumbridge swamp and she would likely have to use some form of trickery to lift the Chalice from his person. Spimuncular silently prayed it was not Father Urhney who was the target of her scandalous mission as he had previously helped her investigate a local haunting and she did not wish to anger her priest friend.

2076tg3.png

Ah, crap . . .

Try as she might, her best efforts at persuasion would not make him leave the Golden Chalice unprotected.

33uvk0z.png

Well, she thought it was pretty smart . . .

It was not until she lit a fire outside his window that he became distracted enough to give her the opportunity she needed to steal the Chalice away and return it to the rather flustered Guildmaster!

104onkh.png

Lesson learned: If the subtle approach does not work, always resort to arson!

Spimuncular felt bad for betraying her swamp dwelling friend, but at a time like this it was important not to let personal feelings stand in the way of her development. If she was going to succeed she needed a lot of support, and the thieves’ guild would be her first proper allies on the road to achieving the status of a hero . . .

Song of the day: Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabies

So yeah, today I gained access to the thieves' guild and spent a few hours training thieving to level 50. That makes nine skills at 50 after 10 days of Runescape. :D

At the end of day 10, these were my stats:

339jexg.png

Feel free to leave any comments or message me in game with corrections, complaints, advice or support. :D One thing I do not want are handouts. Several people have offered me gold and other materials, but as much as I appreciate the sentiment I'm not here to ask for free stuff and instead wish to make it on my own merits. :)

Nice blog. I'm actually quite intrigued by it, as I think it's going to be the first proper blog from day 1 of somebody playing that I know of, as it normally takes people a while before they start using external websites. I wish you the best of luck.

Welcome to Tip.It and RuneScape! I admire your desire to get into the world of gaming but still maintain your independence and not start off on peoples' charity. Best of luck with everything and I hope you enjoy your experience :)

Hello again :)...I will try and make an effort to follow this blog ;), although I'm not so good at committing to things.

"Fight for what you believe in, and believe in what you're fighting for." Can games be art?

I actually have one questions for you Spimucular, are you a member? Your skill screenshot shows you have levels in herblore, thieving, agility, fletching and thieving; but your display on the forum says you are free to play, which confuses me :-?. So which one is it?

I will try to follow the blog because, so once again welcome and good luck.

Thanks for your kind words everyone, and hi Arceus! :D I am actually a member currently due to the 14 day trial, but I will probably activate my subscription when it expires. I made my forum account before my runescape one so the "f2p" thing was an oversight. Thanks for pointing it out :D

I'm very interested in following your journey through Runescape. I started my blog upon reaching level 1,000, which was only couple of months after beginning the game in earnest, but yours takes being a "noob" to a whole new level. :-P

Getting level 50 in all skills is a very ambitious goal. Making it your first goal might get a bit overwhelming. My initial goal was 1,000 total levels, and then level 30 in each skill. Hitting 50 in prayer, construction, runecrafting and herblore will take a good amount of resources.

The most important advice I can give you is to have fun.

50 all skills is a respectable goal.

Protip: farming is the best skill.

The novelisation you are doing is entertaining. Although when I saw the pic with the cabbage patch was "oh god not another one". People here have a certain obsession with them...

I will be following this with interest

It's interesting to see that you're already so wrapped up in the lore and history of the game world, and your novelisation was very, very enjoyable to read, knowing that it came from a freshly minted player.

Have adventures and keep telling stories!

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Again, Miss Spimuncular, Welcome to Tip.It Forums and Community.

I'll be keeping an eye on your blog for when it looks like it might be worth dropping in and lending a few point-loaded thoughts from my mind. :shades:

Thanks everyone for your support. I am glad there is some interest in this blog, as I hesitated before making it. I only posted it after asking in the hyt chat channel whether it was worth it and receiving a resounding yes. :D

Thank you :) I have always been a keen reader of fantasy literature, so one of the first things I did when playing runescape was research some of the history and learn a little about the setting. I thought it would be particularly helpful if I ever decided to publish any form of creative writing to tip.it. :P

Gratz on 50 mining and 44 smithing, those are some of the most boring skills to train and they are quite slow to, so IMO it is actually a great level

I am also loving the novelizations, they are pretty fun.

Thanks :D I don't really mind repetitive tasks, I've worked in retail for long enough that I've learned to switch my brain off.

Thank you for your kind words. :)

Saradomin_Mage, I was there to finish a Burthorpe task and pick up the ring. Grouping sounds scary so it's the last skill I'll probably train :P

Since you're looking for possible skills to level to 50 next, I suggest woodcutting and fletching. Being able to chop and then fletch willow, and then maple, logs into bows is a decent way to bring in some income at lower levels.
