Of course you also have to be critical of everyone even if they are trying to bring a tyrant to justice... http://visiblechildren.tumblr.com/

edit: saw on page 4 someone also posted this. checked the first 3 then for some reason skipped so 5... oops

There's a rebuttal of many of the points of that article here: http://s3.amazonaws.com/www.invisiblechildren.com/critiques.html

To be honest even before I'd read the rebuttal I haven't been particularly impressed by any of the anti-Kony2012 arguments. Even if the charity is squeaky clean, I think you can support the cause without necessarily supporting the charity behind it. I'm not accusing you of saying this, but I find the whole "but it's more complex than that!" argument a little patronising. I get that the situation in Africa is incredibly complex and won't be solved by bringing Kony in. But I think these kind of people can go unpunished precisely because we second guess each other and the outcome of removing Kony et al. The issue is, does Kony deserve to be brought to justice and be judged for his crimes? I think the answer is unequivocally yes, and that's what I think the message of the campaign is about. Of course it won't fix everything, it might help, it might not. But I think if you have a conscience you have to ask yourself why wouldn't you want to try and stop him? You can debate the details of how that's done, and I think his removal has to come from within rather than with some occupation by foreign forces (which the campaign isn't pushing for), but if bringing him to justice gives some closure to the thousands of people he's affected, then it's worth it.

The video made it quite clear the campaign is pushing for involvement from foreign forces....

Involvement is very different from supporting a military campaign like the one in the Middle East. The US forces who were initially deployed were being used in an advisory capacity, to provide specialist knowledge and technology to track him down. On the one hand there's working with the government and military of a country to help them, which is pretty common, and there's invasion or direct military intervention, which is very different.

Except the US has already tried direct military intervention (in terms of raids) and it didn't work.

Invisible Children Inc. are using outdated footage to promote the crusade of a man who is no longer in the country they're supporting the army of. He hasn't been there since 2006, when the Ugandan military managed to drive the LRA out of the country. That's a very big factor to leave out in a video about them getting funding and trying to get the US government to send support to Uganda.

Its so funny to see people saying stuff like supprot from x or something like that after one video and im sure people knew there were alot of problems in Africa. But what are those really gonna do other than that? Probably nothing.

While not entirely on topic, if anyone wants to have some fun trolling ignorant friends, you can always do this.

Everyone did the defending for him. Doing so now would just be starting the same argument over for another 3 pages to reach the same conclusions :P

It was fun while it lasted I guess. We need more of these types of discussions though. OT has been pretty dry in terms of debates lately.

So has this fad basically blown over already? I have to admit, I didn't expect it to be as quick as it was.

I think basically, internet groups love to be against something; for example, most of the internet hate twilight. Hating something as a group seems to be of massive interest to the internet; because liking something together normally never works because people don't like things equally but hate can just be magnified and magnified on the internet beyond recognition because of positive reinforcement and group mentality. Of course Kony isn't a massive evil (like twilight) because their are holes in the hate and there wasn't time for people to hate it enough.

It just shows how hollow the internet is, a perfect example is my little pony and twilight. Because of positive reinforcement and aggressive internet arguing, twilight is made out to be absoloutely terrible while MLP is absoloutely popular as anything. Problem with Kony is that he's a factual person and peoples opinions hold no stead in these sorts o f internet hate campaigns.

It doesn't really help that the "true" motives behind the whole Kony ad have been revealed anyway. Oil, as always. I'd be ashamed to support the movement now honestly. Granted what he has done is awful, but the reason we should "go after him" is just as awful if you ask me.

From March 6th, first page.

Are people seriously only finding out about this now? That's pathetic. Nevertheless, this hype will just blow over in a week and Kony will be forgotten by the American people again.
