Squeal of Fortune + Buyable Spins

Recommended Posts

Because some people don't buy spins for exp. They buy it because they can't wait to spin the Squeal of Fortune once more!

Because people definitely enjoy watching it hop from a lucky elysian shield to 50GP every single time!

Indeed! Oh, the joys of Squeal of Fortune.

I don't see why you two have to be so critically sarcastic about this...it's all for fun, isn't it? Just the other day I was *this* close to getting a elysian, and there were two up for grabs on the same spin, but I got 3 silver ore instead. But you know what? I'm happy. It's all in the fun right? The excitement of spinning the wheel. I'd take that short surge of euphoria of red and yellow lights over actually accomplishing my goals and playing the real game any day.

A friend of mine has done over 2500 spins and has had 3 rare items, all of them being Large Lamps.

The chance of getting anything above yellow rarity are so astronomically small, the way the wheel tricks one into thinking they're almost getting something has happened to me enough times for me to know it's not going to happen.

That's why I feel the sarcasm is needed. :P

Besides, ever since the 2nd of April I have marked the SoF as 'The root of all evil'. I find very little enjoyment in it's existence.

The odds of winning in a real casino game or even just a slot machine is much bigger than anything of the odds in rs is. Set drop rate to a minusucle amount? No problem, people just kill more stuff. But to set the rates at what jagex has done to sof is just absolutely unethical, considering there is real world cost for every spin. For these odds, you are much better off just spending what you're spending on spinning on lottery tickets...eg. Winning something from powerball is 1 in 37...

Ofc the xp selling is completely bs too...

I was talking more purely on the gambling aspect.

I've got in touch with Jagex over email and the Mod confirmed that you indeed need to enter the cvv for spin purchases. Looks like at least one issue is fixed...

From a company perspective, good fight jagex. Win win.

But its a game marketed to 13-18 year olds.

The flashing lights an bling bling all reflect the same atmosphere as a slot machine.\

The design is same as a casinos.

But its all legit, Jagex would of had lawyers run over this with a fine tooth comb.

Good fight, dislike but good job from a investment perspective.

Look forward everyone, that is to buying gp ect in the future in my opinion.

Lots of other games offer it, jagex is just shifting with the times.

I'm against it, but understand it. Meh I guess, glad I rarely play to be honest.

My optimistic nature wants to tell me that Jagex understands that legitimizing buying GP would be the straw that broke the camel's back. Also a few people mentioned that it would place a value on GP and label RuneScape as gambling and subject to appropriate laws in appropriate countries.

I think if Jagex does expand the cash shop (and RuneScape does have a cash shop now, that only sells spins), it will follow the logic of Squeal of Fortune: Untradeable, unalchable, special versions. Like you'll be able to buy a "Requisitioned [item]" (requisitioned is just the title I gave to it).

The value of GP is based on it's redeemable value, not the value you pay for it. Many companies perform microtransactions. Until their is a case that establishes them as online gambling, and thus illegal (only in the US), there will likely be nothing done about it.

New name? How about "Steal A Fortune"?

That's actually a pretty fitting name for it. I wish this was Reddit so I could upvote this comment. :P

Although I am sure they have a legal team ensuring that they do not "technically" break the law, they are walking a very fine line in regards to gambling. Take this snippet of the UK 2005 Gambling act for instance:

Gaming & game of chance

(1) In this Act “gaming” means playing a game of chance for a prize.

(2) In this Act “game of chance”—

(a) includes—

(i) a game that involves both an element of chance and an element

of skill,

(ii) a game that involves an element of chance that can be

eliminated by superlative skill, and

(iii) a game that is presented as involving an element of chance, but

(4) For the purposes of this Act a person plays a game of chance for a prize—

(a) if he plays a game of chance and thereby acquires a chance of winning

a prize, and

(b) whether or not he risks losing anything at the game.

Seems like gambling so far eh?

Ah, but here is the loophole:

(5) In this Act “prize” in relation to gaming (except in the context of a gaming

machine)—

(a) means money or money’s worth, and

(b) includes both a prize provided by a person organising gaming and

winnings of money staked.

You see, Jagex will claim the items won have no real world value and are therefore not a "prize" in accordance with law.

So Jagex claims that they want us to pay for something that's worth nothing?

This is so rude...

What's your child worth?

It's priceless isn't it? Well in that case it doesn't matter if I take it away from you does it?

I so hate this theoretical bu llshit Jagex is coming with now.
