06-June-2012 : Fish Flingers Improvements + Squeal of Neptune

Fish Flingers Improvements

Heading over to Isla Anglerine for a fish-flinging foray into competitive angling has never been easier, more rewarding or more fun with the release of our Fish Flingers improvements. As well as being easier to access, XP gain is upped for those who make the most of their bait and tackle strategy, and there are succulent fillets of XP for those cooperating with other players to reel in really big fish. There are some flippin’ fantastic new rewards from the shop too, including a 4-piece fishing outfit that’ll give up to 2.5% more XP when worn:

Greater Accessibility

The fishermen who teleport you to the competition are now permanently present, rather than appearing when a tournament is active. They’re also marked by a D&D icon, as well as a new, distinctive look, so they’re easy to spot. They can be found at the following locations:

Inside the Fishing Guild

Catherby beach

Shilo Village

Piscatoris

Barbarian Village

North-west of Lumbridge

South-east of Lumbridge Swamp

South-west of Draynor Village

Burthorpe (when tutorial mode is inactive)

At the docks south of Burgh de Rott

Competitions now occur every 20 minutes, and – as long as you have an entry ticket remaining – you can wait in the Fish Flingers starting area after a competition for the next one to begin.

Rather than receiving 10 entry tickets per week, you can now speak to any one of the fishermen each day to receive 2 tickets.

The reward shop is now accessible via any of the fishermen.

Better Gameplay

If you reach a 100% rating, you’ll have a chance to hook a big fish. When this happens, you and all other players nearby will be notified. You won’t be able to pull it in on your own, so be sure to ask for help – the XP and point rewards for reeling in one of these beauties will be more than worth it for all involved.

Competitions have been reduced in length to 10 minutes, making them more frantic and exciting than before.

Interfaces have been reworked and an array of usability improvements have been made, including the following:

A countdown timer, displaying the time remaining in the current competition.

A new interface, displaying the best tackle combinations you’ve discovered so far.

A simpler, easier to understand weight system.

Hints can now be obtained by right-clicking on the fisherman, giving you fast fishing advice on the fly.

Barrels are closer to the shore, and cast areas are marked on the minimap. It’s also possible – once you’ve selected your bait, hook and weight, of course - to fish by right-clicking on the barrels.

Better Rewards

XP rates have been tweaked to reward the efforts of anglers who devote time to finding the optimal combination of tackle for their given situation.

A new, four-piece fishing outfit is available in the rewards store, giving a bonus to Fishing XP gain - up to 2.5%, when the full set is worn.

All versions of the tackle box earned as a reward now have new features. They hold a stack of raw fish (growing in size as the box is upgraded), karambwan vessels, crayfish cages, living minerals, and your fishing outfit. Through their ‘competition history’ function, they also display your current number of Fish Flingers tickets, and state when you will be able to claim more.

All of these, as well as a net-full of graphical and audio improvements, make Fish Flingers a definitive angling experience for fishers of all levels. Cast away!

Mod Stu

In Other News

Acquiring a champion’s tackle box is now a requirement for the trimmed completionist cape.

Lost Fish Flingers rewards can now by reclaimed for free at the Fish Flingers rewards shop, or by speaking to any of the fishermen.

The graphics in the caves found throughout the Burthorpe area have been improved. Be sure to take a look!

The Runic Accuracy and Sharpshooter auras - up to Master level - are currently available for a 25% discounted price!

The Squeal of Neptune

With news of the new-and-improved Fish Flingers Distraction & Diversion, Yelps has embarked on an underwater adventure. For one week only, Yelps will be sharing some of his deep sea treasure, including a tradable, rare fish mask. Plenty of fishy prizes await players who spin...the Squeal of Neptune!

For one week only, not only will the Squeal be sporting a new underwater theme, you’ll also be able to hook some piscine prizes that we have no trout you’ll enjoy.

The catch of the day - or rather week - will be the new, tradable fish mask, available to win as an Uncommon prize, before taking its place as a rare prize on the wheel throughout the summer months, similar to the Queen’s Guard uniform and the Ceremonial Dragon outfit. Be sure to catch this slippery item while you can!

Aside from looking completely awesome, the fish mask has several intriguing features. When equipped, your charmingly aquatic visage will mean you can fish for compliments from the very denizens of the sea you’re trying to catch. It also sports the ability to perform a bubble-blowing emote that is shore to amuse your fellow fishers.

If you do manage to bag a mask and you don’t fancy holding onto it yourself, you can always sell it on to someone more in-tuna with the ways of the fish!

Instead of several of the usual Common prizes , you’ll find a trawler-load of fish and fishing-related flotsam and jetsam over the course of the week, including:

Raw tuna

Raw swordfish

Seaweed

Oyster pearls

And much more!

We’re also offering you the chance to get your fins on some additional Fish Flingers tickets to play the newly improved Fish Flingers Distraction and Diversion!

Remember, the Squeal of Neptune is available for one week only and is an ideal opportunity to use your spins to maximise your catch. As members get 2 free spins every day instead of the usual 1, RuneScape membership is an excellent way to increase your chances of preventing this unique prize from being the one that got away!

Good luck!

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Tradable item... Fail.

Why can't the Big Bang be done by the hand of God?

It could have, but it is next to impossible because it also could have been caused by the flying spaghetti monster, or one of the other infinite number of deity possibilities.

Can I win more than 1 fish mask?

You can win multiple fish masks from the Squeal of Neptune/Fortune. Then, it’s up to you, should you wish to keep or trade them.

How long is the Squeal of Neptune available?

One week only for the majority of the fish items, the Fish Mask will be available throughout the summer.

How long is the fish mask available?

The fish mask will be available throughout the summer, as with the Queen Black Dragon and Queen’s Guard-themed sets. We’ll let you know in plenty of time when they’ll be taken off the wheel.

You said you’d never add more rares. What’s changed?

After weighing up the options, we decided to make a change. Rares are quite fun, and making the occasional new item tradable makes them more interesting for players who aren’t interested in cosmetic rewards, but are more interested in the economy and trading.

What will new rares do to the economy?

On the whole, rare items from the early days of RuneScape have been good for the economy and behave in a similar fashion to precious metals in the real world. However, with the lack of additional rares in more recent years - which is akin to not gathering any new precious resources - the negative impact and effects of low availability are starting to outweigh the positives. With the addition of occasional new rare items such as the tradable fish mask (available for a limited time during the summer), this will alleviate the pressure on the original items, and help the economy in general.

What will happen to the prices of the old rares?

That’s the 2 billion gp question! We expect these new rares to have very little impact on the older rares, as their prices have remained predictable over a long period. There are of a limited number which will never increase, so the price will rise as availability decreases.

Found this interesting. Yes I am mad.

Trying is just the first step in failure.

I was in the whole - I don't give a toss camp about SoF but this latest tradeable item is well a load of crap.. The only positive is at least its only cosmetic because if it had been a stat boosting item that would of been serious bad stuff. Let's hope they stop here.. Also, the way they plug membership with the SoF really makes me feel a bit sick. I presume people do buy spins? I honestly don't know anyone who openly admits to it.

Fish Flingers - looks kinda cool but I hate fishing of any sort so I don't imagine I'll be checking it out for a few months.

Don't these two points contradict each other.

Really have to wonder what Jagex's year aims are... Wonder if they can single handedly get everyone to ragequit.

And imo, the only reason this mask is tradable is because it will make people buy spins in the hope of getting it.

As prooved by the post above mine.

I guess I'll just have to stop trusting what jagex say, i guess. <_<

They seem to have nerfed the amount of tokens you get per FF game, so it'll take longer to get the rewards. I got 9 the first game i did today and i used to get 40 every game before. Was awarded 5 medals instead of the max 4 as well for some reason. Either they changed how you get tokens/medals, or the new max is 10.

So, basically, buy spins or buy masks from those who have done now. Stock up on those masks. Keep them in bank for 5 years. Sell for a HUGE profit. I will be honest here: I might just buy myself a few spins, even though I am against this system, this is a chance not to make a puny 10M, but 1000M+ in the long run.

The fish flingers update looks good though.
