Slaying Hellhounds

Hi there,

I've recently started up Slayer again (Level 57) and was recently assigned 117 Hellhounds from Sumona. I went to Taverly Dungeon and began fighting them, but they quickly got me down to low health and I ended up having to leave. I haven't been back there yet, but I want to try and tackle it again tomorrow. I was just trying to gather as much information and help about slaying Hellhounds before I tried it again. My set up consisted of:

 

Helm: Helm of Neitiznot

Amulet: Amulet of Glory

Body: Verac's Brassard

Legs: Verac's Plateskirt

Weapon: Abyssal Whip

Offhand: Dragon Defender

Boots: Dragon Boots

Ring: Ring of Glory

 

I'm not in the best state financially to buy a multicannon and finish the task that way, and was wondering if ranging them with a Rune Crossbow would be more beneficial.

 

tl;dr: Slaying Hellhounds and not doing so well. How can I improve?

Protect from melee.

 

Edit: you should also pray 15% strength, chivalry or piety as your stats allow, and use an attacking familiar in the resource dungeon if possible. Proselye armour is better than Verac's for this.

Melee protect can be great.

 

If you'll ever get to the point where you use kuradal as slayer master, melee pray and afk them in kuradal's dungeon.

 

EDIT:

If you are going to melee them anyway, take proselyte instead of veracs.

Soulwars cape for prayer if you have.

 

If you have demonhorn necklace or split dragontooth necklace and bonecrusher, they are a fine combo to help prayers last.

Except that the difference in attack/strength between fire cape and a soul wars cape is 1/4, 3/8 for tokhaar, which means SW cape isn't worth it, and torso beats proselyte as well if you own it (I presumed the OP didn't but still). Verac's vs proselyte is obvious of course. Demon horn necklace pretty much sucks except if you cannon wallasalkis for 0hp xp charms (I should know I own/have used one).
