I have not been able to figure out when or why this happens though. I think this may have happened one or two times before the forum update, but I'm not sure if I remember that correctly. EDIT: Apparently there's a bugfix in version 3.3.4 (which I think we'll be upgrading to soon) to do with topic marking.
