Runescape Permadeath Server

If you've ever played a rouguelike, you'd realize how exciting things can get when permadeath is looming. 10x experience rate would make this awesome. Now all that useless smithing/fletching/crafting crap will actually play an integral role in the PD server metagame, seeing as most people won't survive long enough to find/sell/trade the high end gear (abyssal whip/barrows/godwars etc.) It'd be like a DIYer's dream.

For this to even work the game would need major overhauls. Basically whoever gets access to high end things first like ancient magics automatically wins. Entire clans who have that can shut down other clans. It's like what happened in TOR in the first week, where the Sith side had a massive advantage and would spawn camp until the game became unplayable.

Also the xp system is too slow. As said before, it would be impossible to progress past a certain point without getting pked and losing it all.

Finally, quests would have to be overhauled to take place in mostly safe areas. I could only imagine clans 24/7 camping ancient magics quest areas (or even rune rocks and resource areas) just to make sure no one else gets them.

If you want any indication of how impossible it would be to play, just remember what happened when pk worlds were introduced and try to imagine playing that way.

Find a random idea on the suggestions forum, add a big "What if" to the beginning, and then ask everyone's opinion at the end. When you're done, tell me what the difference between that and this is.

I think what you are missing is that by adding what if, and asking people's opinions, makes the thread less of a suggestion and more of a discussion. And this forum, after all, is called general discussion.

Have the courage to change the things you can, the patience to accept the things you can't, and the wisdom to know the difference.

The suggestions board is a discussions board as well. The difference is that its focus is on hypothetical content. This thread is purely hypothetical.

So as not to stray too far off topic - IMO I think permadeath PVP worlds would be an interesting experience if the XP and rare drops were increased exponentially. Such a world would have a radically different economy given the risks. I'm not sure how popular such a thing would be in the long-term.

I think hardcore servers with 10x xp and higher drop rates (like 1/10 for things like claws, bcp etc.) would be very interesting. I don't know about fun, but interesting.

I would like to see a less steep xp climb, maybe something like 1k xp for level 2, 3k (total) for 3, 6k for 4 etc. up to about 5m for 99, at 5-10x xp rates. Not 100% related to hardcore servers, but it would make lower-tier resources a bit more important. Right now the jump from making mithril to adamant platebodies (68 to 88) is about 3.7m xp, starting at 600k (so over 7x the xp required). There's shop-bought of course, but some items can't be bought or gotten as drops very easily (magic shortbow, dragonhide armour past green).

Also, starting with some mechanic to prevent people from killing you while you are training on cows might be nice.

The difference is this thread will get considerably more posts and the suggestion thread will get one page of posts at most.

Difference being a topic in 2010 about "What if free trade was to return, how would it change the game"? is a general discussion. Verses "I think free trade should come back and pvp worlds should stay the same" is a suggestion,

As for people being able to camp certain places to avoid other people getting it:

Harder if you cannot get food at those places.

Also, what about a small twist to the concept:

You have 10 lives before you are perma-dead and restart with a stat/bank wipe?

Arguing about what forum this belongs in is off topic. The staff is aware of the topic and it's been intentionally left in General Discussion. If you'd like, you can PM any moderator to discuss this with them, but please let things get back on topic! :) Thanks.

I'd be all for it. I had a similar suggestion (Rebooting Runescape) with both servers that reset on a timed basis, as well as fresh servers that simply began with the game now, as through it was anew (without some economic inconsistencies), However, I completely overlooked the possibility of perma-death servers.

As suggested, I feel that perma-death servers with vastly boosted xp rates would be extremely fun. It's the kind of game you can play over and over in different styles, trying new things without the fear of wasting a decade of your life. I'm definitely in support of this, and even willing to pay another separate membership for access.

The main problem with something like this in my opinion would be that it is an online game, how depressing would it be to have your account wiped for disconnecting or lagging.

Check it out, huge amount of effort has gone into this massive mod!

Pretty much this. My net isn't the best some times, and makes it hard to enjoy most of the truly fun things left on Runescape due to it. As fun as this sounds, without some kind of safety net for stuff out of your control it would just become aggrevating.

"To make this even more extreme this is also a fully pvp server, meaning the whole world is multiperson pvp zoned so you can get piled by a clan at any time. The exception to this rule is entire cities are pvp free as are "civilization zones" such as guilds are pvp free. Guards/NPCs in cities are unattackable and unpickpocketable meaning that you would have to go out into danger to train virtually every skill."

No.

I absolutely love your creativity, but a gametype such as this is beyond approachable. Will never, could never, won't ever happen. If RuneScape went into the mode of creating servers specific to a group of people's gametypes, this would be a different story. HOWEVER, as the game is now, this will never happen.

Fun idea though :)

Edit: I feel I didn't answer the questions in the OP.

Would I play this? No. I've spent too much time on my account to waste time on a noob account that is basically a pure just to survive. I think it would be such a limited success to RuneScape that it wouldn't be worth the developer's time implementing. Yes, it sure as hell would add new interesting gameplay elements for the people who would like this addition to the game. The people wanting this are most likely in clans and are hoping to kill and loot normal players. Honestly.

Not creative really, Diablo 2 coined hardcore mode for gaming. That or at least made it extremely popular..

I don't think anyone in the world would be dumb enough to play this game mode/on this server. Your thread kind of annoys me, sorry.

No. There is too much grind to have it all thrown away by some random PKer so I'd have to start all over again.

Don't play it then. He's suggesting it as a separate game from the real thing, not as a replacement.

I would definately play it at least once. I think it would add quite a bit of excitement into the game. I would have a REALLY hard time not ragequitting after my first death though. The increased xp rates and lower level caps would help with that though, make it a little faster to bouce back.

increased xp rates and low levels of players will help that out. You wouldnt see 138's in this environment you will see lots of 70's or 80's both the faster xp rates and lower level of pkers make pking much faster

PVP hasn't yet been released in Diablo 3.

But its coming. Your argument is invalid.

Wouldn't it only be invalid if we knew Diablo 3 was successful with hardcore pvp servers? We have no evidence that this will be the case aside from Diablo's good history with balancing, do we?

To build on Kimberly's argument, we don't yet know if there will even be hardcore pvp servers. Will there be PVP? Yes, but it could be only for Normal characters.
