Miss Slay xx
So I've always wanted to wear a spirit shield and today I completed Summer's End. I can only afford the Spectral Spirit Shield which is 20m so I'm just wondering if it's a good idea to wear it while killing ganodermic beasts, I see in most cases people suggest Arcane but I can't afford that one for now but I really want to try out a spirit shield so would it be embarrasing to take a spectral shield with me at ganodermics?  It seems to give good defence stats but compared to Arcane, it sucks. JeRambo
Not worth it at all. You protect magic the whole time anyway. Arcane or unholy zamorak book work. "Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come." "An imperfect man can do great deeds, and a great man imperfect ones. JeRambo
Dragon defender all the way there. :P. Spectral might be good at ranging corp or ranging armadyl/tanking some GWD bosses, maybe.. AHappySeeker
Spec is useless at everything.
Mojo_Monkey
What if I were killing frost dragons? Does it come in good use there? With 61 herb I would say not....assuming you are ranging then def isn't needed as they only use one attack type, which you can pray against. And still then you would need whatever level herb for super anti-fires (85 iirc).
Miss Slay xx
I see, thanks for all the information. No spectral shield then. :P So since Spectral seems to be pretty useless how about Arcane? Is that one worth killing ganos and frosts with? Naive
Arcane is probably the best offhand slot item you can take to ganos since the pps doesn't use runes so no use for surgebox. Frosts idk, do people even mage those? AHappySeeker
Maging frosts is a waste of time that you are highly unlikely to derive any satisfaction from. Edited September 29, 2012 by Quyneax Word choice ;)
Quyneax
You can actually mage frosts, and it's sort of a compromise between magic xp gain and cost. Though it seems unlikely to me it's better than maging ganodermics. Dr.Vermin
The only thing a spectral shield is good for is mage defence, and there are actually a few places where you might want to max that out, at the expense of attack bonuses. It's good for defending against nomad and sunfreet's mage attack, since those attacks are based on magic defence but mage pray doesn't work against them. With a spectral shield and ganodermic armour, the only damage I receive from nomad is his lp-1 attack. Also useful for soul wars, to get to the enemy avatar without being frozen by mages. And yes, I am aware that soul wars in inefficient if your goal is the get max/comp cape or make money.

Magic def at Nex is only used because it coincides with high ranged bonus, which prevents excessive damage during shadow phases and provides easier lures. I'd argue the usefulness of a spectral at Sunfreet too, due to it having fairly high def and goliaths being required to fight it. The magic attack isn't threatening, as you'll only take 1 hit per landing if you play correctly.
