'Unfortunate' Lag ?

Just a thought, I was fine until the BXP started & now lagging like hell.

World populations haven't changed dramatically, so can't blame that.

Have Jagex added lag to slow down XP gains - nothing would surprise me!!

What I mean by 'adding lag' is they haven't appreciated the vast numbers of players taking advantage of this BXP weekend & their servers have been unable to cope at the usual speeds, which is slightly short-sighted !

Any thoughts?

Can't imagine they would intentionally do it, but the lag is pretty unbearable.

For comparison, my last dungeon timed 30 mins with DGSweeper but the end time by Jagex was under 20 mins (recall that Jagex counts ticks, so if there is server lag you get a reduced time). Pretty big difference...

I would assume that the lag is produced by mass xp gain or something..

I was lagging like nothing else on W87 but had zero lag on w63

I doubt it's on purpose, but things are definitely bad. I couldn't log in for the first few hours (continually got the message that my account hadn't logged out from its previous session, which was last night). I've been able to log in just now, but it's truly unbearable. Fingers crossed I don't bump into Thunderous :-s.

What doesn't surprise me is the over-analytical skepticism coming from the creation of this thread.

The lag has been going on from the very moment BXPW started. Had jagex wanted to slow down the xp rate they wouldn't have made it a flat 2x xp rate as it is now. They put thought and consideration into the things they do. Though you might not see how they came to their decisions. There are a lot of things we don't see, we don't see the conversations held day in and day out about these things. We don't see the concepts written in paper, first spoken in tongue, the basic thought concept.

On a semirelavent note conspiracy theorists annoy the bat guano out of me!

Pack all the players in for BXPW... piss them off with lag when they get there.

Seems legit.

Maybe it's only on members worlds? I haven't had any more lag that usual.

You can reduce some lag by making sure your graphic settings include "idle animations" being set to "few". This hides any animations which are behind another player or entity that you would not notice anyway. I would go into a long spiel on why the servers are lagging technically speaking, but most people would not understand a word I would say.

Here is a more basic explanation: Basically, the game server has a certain amount of resources allocated from the physical server it runs on. A physical server usually hosts three game servers. The servers uses the resources by handling entity updates (Player and NPC movements, interactions, etc), world events (Stars, evil trees, holiday events, etc), farming plot updates, quest instances (when your character is separated from the main game), and other things. When those physical server resources are used up or maxed out or each virtually allocated world uses it's allocated resources, the server basically becomes inundated and starts to choke. When more and more players across the hosted game worlds on a physical server start to do more and more actions than normal, the server needs to handle those additional tasks.

There are a few things Jagex could've done ahead of time to prevent this, but they probably weren't expecting the server load.

Extra server load? On a 2x bonus xp weekend? Who could have predicted such a thing? :P

Haha, who indeed.

Well, since it's no use doing 20 min dungeons that last 30 mins in reality due to lag, I'm out for now. I'll save myself the bother and the irritation. At least I got to clean out those talon beast charms in my bank.

Considering they used to have over 200,000 concurrent players with no lag, either they down-graded their hardware to something cheaper to reduce operation costs since they do not need to provide service to as many players or they have a bug in their entity handling subroutines which is blown to a larger scale due to the changes made for bonus experience.

I do believe summoning receiving the 2x boost this time has alot to do with this. There are just so many people and familiars moving at the same time it causes lag. You move 3 steps - stop - move another 3 - stop and so on. We were having nothing similar to this on previous bonus xp weekends when I think most of people were just standing at the bank. Now we have alot of people online and at the time of writing this it feels like almost everyone is training summoning (can't blame them). If my theory holds, we should be expecting little relief on the problem when people start training other skills. There is really no other skill that requires as much movement as summoning does.

Could be possible that they implemented bxp weekend with bot-watch in order to catch people botting. To think they deliberately tried to ruin the gaming experience for their customers may be the stupidest thing i've ever heard...

think hard about why Jagex would do deliberate lag. If there isn't something to gain its probably not deliberate.

If Jagex was selling priority login benefits and everyone but those accounts would lag to hell, yes, yes it is deliberate.

If Jagex is not gaining from it, no, no its not deliberate.

By reducing excess operating costs, they are not trying to ruin the game for anyone. They are simply reducing excess costs. Its like buying a semi truck to haul around a canoe. If you could fit the product onto a smaller container without effecting the quality, then why not? There is no need to pay for a physical server to house virtual servers with a max player count 2000 players when they top out at 1200-1500 people.

As to double exp weekend and bot-watch, I think they are using it to collect data. I think they are trying to find out how long player are willing to play at a time and how their play style changes over long periods of time, then they will use this data to enhance their detection algorithms. Logically, a normal human can not keep a high rate of activity for 20 hours straight. Eventually, they will start to slow down, mess up clicking, etc. A bot would keep on doing the same rate and programmatically misclick between a certain time range for many hours.

The first Bonus Weekend didn't have any lag AND also had the 2.7x multiplier for summoning.
