Building a laptop?

Hedgehog

Recommended Posts

I would like to order the majority of the parts I need on Monday, but I'm not sure where to start.

I have a few questions, hopefully someone here can answer them.

How hard is it to build a laptop? Would it be better to just order a laptop with the specs I want? Are there any good resources? I did a quick google search, but I'm not sure what I should trust.

I have about $1000 to work with, but the less I spend, the better.

I'm not really expecting anyone to outline what I should specifically buy, but if anyone has some recommendations, that'd be cool.

I don't do any hardcore gaming, but i'd still like to get at least 30 fps on runescape. I'd also like to have this computer for a few years, so I don't want to buy crappy parts that will be outdated in a few months.

Thanks

You cant.

The only customizable parts in a laptop are Hard Drive, RAM and CD Drive. everything else is basically welded into place, including CPU and Graphics.

The only way you can really customize one, is to order via a manufacture (Dell, Apple, Samsung etc) and customize it PRIOR to construction.

OR go to a store like JB Hi-Fi and buy a pre-assembled one. These days you can get a decent gamish-laptop for about $1000 AU.

In your case I would say customize one online, I am in a similar situation and the computer I decided on is the lenovo ideapad y580 http://shop.lenovo.c...C7A&action=init

It has everything you would need I assume, I am getting the $1079 model because I wanted the ssd caching, however you could add that after I believe (dont quote me on it) once you free up some more money (should be around $70-$100.)

Also look around see what you can find, and let me know if you find a good deal ;)

While it is possible to build a laptop (obviously every laptop has to be built) - it is quite difficult in comparison to a desktop computer and isn't really worth your time. Nearly all parts for a laptop are custom-made by the manufacturer, to ensure they all fit together in the small compact case.

It is possible to order and build from a single manufacturer, but it is likely cheaper and more efficient to just buy a manufactured laptop from them in the first place. There are also many companies which provide the option to pick the parts you want in your laptop, and then they will build it - this is usually inexpensive and a quick Google search will get you a few options.

My advice (not being an elitist, just my advice) is to custom-build a desktop PC, not only do you get a lot more "bang for your buck" by being able to order cheaper parts of the same value and custom build it, there are more customization options available for you out there. :)

Why build a laptop? Unless you have your own manufacturing equitment for the case it's going to be very hard to manage cooling and to get everything it fit perfectly. Honestly you're better off getting a premade one as they have the resources to build one properly. Not saying it cant be done. It's similar to you building your own phone.

  • 2 weeks later...

My friend and I put together a nice custom laptop. One big problem we ran into is the complete lack of barebone cases. They also don't come too cheap as the one he got was a 480$ bundle with case/mobo and screen.

After that just go with a nice high end mobile i5 quad or something and throw in a small extrenal GPU and you should be set 8GB of Ram etc. etc.

I will try and get him to send me the link of the barebone case incase your intrested. But it is very difficult to actually build a Laptop over a desktop. But if you do, make it count lol
