Where are all the good guides?

Th e Doctor

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a trend across all the runescape fansites. That trend is the disappearance of good guides, specifically monster hunting. The vast majority of the tip.it guides aren't updated for eoc in any way shape or form.

There are tons of YouTube videos out there but I don't ant to waste 20 minutes listening to

A) someone with a British accent covering each and every piece of equipment with a 5 minute expository on why they chose that particular piece and its emotional significance to them.

Or

B) Some stoner swearing about every little thing that happens on the screen and extroverting every thought that goes through their heads.

I miss the days when I could click a guide, read just the information I was looking for and then get back to scaping. These video guides are always disappointing and can't ever be updated easily.

So why do you think good old written guides are waning and who is willing to join me in starting to write them again? I'm currently working on my KBD guide and will continue from there as I try and become competent at more bosses.

Its not the disappearance of good guides its the outdating of them - creating such guides for what is essentially entirely new combat system takes time and isn't aided when Jagex keeps making further tweaks and throwing in new hide end gear. I mean sure most major monster hunters have a rough idea of how to play them now, but some get turned on their head in an instant with minor 'tweaks' and theres not really the same honed refinement of the generally accepted method as there once was. I mean heck for GWD boss alone they been tweaked like twice since EoC launch and since TWW there's talk of them possibly having their TWW specials added on.

Just my two cents.

writing is time consuming and formating the text is annoying (although it's a lot easier than what it used to be). Good guides need pictures of equipment, getting there, safespots, etc. you have to take the picture, edit it, upload it, link it. It's easier to just video your PvM run and comment it.

EoC is still new, working out strategys takes time, testing takes time. Almost every guide you find on a fansite is gold. Youtube videos are not, some are good, but only a fraction.

The main thing, quality takes time and not everyone can afford to *waste* 10-20 hours.

You want a good guide? A good guide takes time to make? There is information to be gathered, tests to be ran on various items and skill variations, then organised it all and get it distributed.

I didn't play very much around the time EoC was released, so when I started playing again I was completely lost. I just started looking through the skills and items and asked friends/clan mates when I got stuck.

Just give it some time

The problem is, is that the EoC is still regularly updated, too regularly for proper guide writing.

I could probably pen down 4-5 good EoC guides right now but I'm unsure how relevant it would be in 2-4 weeks time (especially with drastic reforms coming April).

As said earlier.

EoC is being frequently updated and changed.

Armour update, monster defence, monster buff, glitches, all kinds of stuff. Not to mention new equipment and abilities.

It's hard to rewrite a guide because sometimes you'd have to rethink your whole strategy.

You're gonna have to stick to youtube and player experiences for your monster hunting.

Trial and error to your own stats.

I had no idea what to bring to Zammy gwd other than the word that he was weak to fire spells and bloodfire barrage was the best strategy.

One or two runs later I knew what to bring.

Yeah, for the most part all of these changes have made it difficult to find replacement guides. It's a pain to even find somebody who both knows how to fight something effectively (across different tiers of equipment) and is willing to actually share that information in a well formatted matter within a timespan that could be better spent using those techniques to earn money in the absence of competition. In addition, many players now favor making videos.

In a way you could think we have gone back to the old times in that respect.

I rather like the British accent myself :P

A couple people have really nailed it that the constant tweaking is giving us, and I imagine every other fansite as well, a bit of a headache. One of the more brilliant examples was the item database, where Jagex changed the stats right as it was about done, requiring the crew to check every single weapon and piece of armour they had just done. Mostly, it just sucks up an immense amount of time, and then once you factor in doing things like the new quest guides and keeping up with other content additions, there is just a bit of a time shortage, which is unfortunately not a problem that we can always deal with quickly (like not being able to magic new staff into existence as needed, we have to find and train them). It's not being ignored, just not moving as quickly as would be ideal.

There are also other ideas in the works that will help with the guides specifically, but again we need a certain level of manpower available before we can make any headway getting them going. Should be fun though. In the meantime, friends are fantastic. You might also consider picking the brains of some of your fellow users here in the help and advice section. A few of the TMHT frequent there, and many of them are quite accomplished boss hunters as are a fair few of our other users.

what do you expect from video game videos?

and yes they do keep messing up eoc its not as straightforward and they have lots of leeway to change stuff

I much prefer to reading and making a written guide, each for different reasons:

1. If I were to make a video guide, there might be details I leave out during the Video, plus my accent would literally make my audience's die from blood loss through the ears.

2. If I am using a guide, I'd rather have a text so I can easily find what I am looking for (and preferrably not be spoiled), it's hard to do that on a video.

A missed opportunity (so far): Jagex could write official in-game guides for various things and put them on the SoF in the uncommon/rare slots.

You mean including their recommendations to dual wield Rune longswords in Pernix? :P

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

And maybe make it members only object where f2p players have a 70% chance of obtaining one. Kind of like what a lot of items are like now.
